    An improved particle swarm optimization algorithm for dynamic job shop scheduling problems with random job arrivals

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.Random job arrivals that happen frequently in manufacturing practice may create a need for dynamic scheduling. This paper considers an issue of how to reschedule the randomly arrived new jobs to pursue both performance and stability in a job shop. Firstly, a mixed integer programming model is established to minimize three objectives, including the discontinuity rate of new jobs during the processing, the makespan deviation of initial schedule, and the sequence deviation on machines. Secondly, four match-up strategies from references are modified to determine the rescheduling horizon. Once new jobs arrive, the rescheduling process is immediately triggered with ongoing operations remain. The ongoing operations are treated as machine unavailable constraints (MUC) in the rescheduling horizon. Then, a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm with improvements is proposed to solve the dynamic job shop scheduling problem. Improvement strategies consist of a modified decoding scheme considering MUC, a population initialization approach by designing a new transformation mechanism, and a novel particle movement method by introducing position changes and a random inertia weight. Lastly, extensive experiments are conducted on several instances. The experiments results show that the modified rescheduling strategies are statistically and significantly better than the compared strategies. Moreover, comparative studies with five variants of PSO algorithm and three state-of-the-art meta-heuristics demonstrate the high performance of the improved PSO algorithm

    Artificial Intelligence to Solve Production Scheduling Problems in Real Industrial Settings: Systematic Literature Review

    This literature review examines the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in manufacturing systems, in line with the principles of Industry 4.0 and the growth of smart factories. AI is essential for managing the complexities in modern manufacturing, including machine failures, variable orders, and unpredictable work arrivals. This study, conducted using Scopus and Web of Science databases and bibliometric tools, has two main objectives. First, it identifies trends in AI-based scheduling solutions and the most common AI techniques. Second, it assesses the real impact of AI on production scheduling in real industrial settings. This study shows that particle swarm optimization, neural networks, and reinforcement learning are the most widely used techniques to solve scheduling problems. AI solutions have reduced production costs, increased energy efficiency, and improved scheduling in practical applications. AI is increasingly critical in addressing the evolving challenges in contemporary manufacturing environments

    Planning and reconfigurable control of a fleet of unmanned vehicles for taxi operations in airport environment

    The optimization of airport operations has gained increasing interest by the aeronautical community, due to the substantial growth in the number of airport movements (landings and take-offs) experienced in the past decades all over the world. Forecasts have confirmed this trend also for the next decades. The result of the expansion of air traffic is an increasing congestion of airports, especially in taxiways and runways, leading to additional amount of fuel burnt by airplanes during taxi operations, causing additional pollution and costs for airlines. In order to reduce the impact of taxi operations, different solutions have been proposed in literature; the solution which this dissertation refers to uses autonomous electric vehicles to tow airplanes between parking lots and runways. Although several analyses have been proposed in literature, showing the feasibility and the effectiveness of this approach in reducing the environmental impact, at the beginning of the doctoral activity no solutions were proposed, on how to manage the fleet of unmanned vehicles inside the airport environment. Therefore, the research activity has focused on the development of algorithms able to provide pushback tractor (also referred as tugs) autopilots with conflict-free schedules. The main objective of the optimization algorithms is to minimize the tug energy consumption, while performing just-in-time runway operations: departing airplanes are delivered only when they can take-off and the taxi-in phase starts as soon as the aircraft clears the runway and connects to the tractor. Two models, one based on continuous time and one on discrete time evolution, were developed to simulate the taxi phases within the optimization scheme. A piecewise-linear model has also been proposed to evaluate the energy consumed by the tugs during the assigned missions. Furthermore, three optimization algorithms were developed: two hybrid versions of the particle swarm optimization and a tree search heuristic. The following functional requirements for the management algorithm were defined: the optimization model must be easily adapted to different airports with different layout (reconfigurability); the generated schedule must always be conflict-free; and the computational time required to process a time horizon of 1h must be less than 15min. In order to improve its performance, the particle swarm optimization was hybridized with a hill-climb meta-heuristic; a second hybridization was performed by means of the random variable search, an algorithm of the family of the variable neighborhood search. The neighborhood size for the random variable search was considered varying with inverse proportionality to the distance between the actual considered solution and the optimal one found so far. Finally, a tree search heuristic was developed to find the runway sequence, among all the possible sequences of take-offs and landings for a given flight schedule, which can be realized with a series of taxi trajectories that require minimum energy consumption. Given the taxi schedule generated by the aforementioned optimization algorithms a tug dispatch algorithm, assigns a vehicle to each mission. The three optimization schemes and the two mathematical models were tested on several test cases among three airports: the Turin-Caselle airport, the Milan-Malpensa airport, and the Amsterdam airport Schiphol. The cost required to perform the generated schedules using the autonomous tugs was compared to the cost required to perform the taxi using the aircraft engines. The proposed approach resulted always more convenient than the classical one

    Scheduling Algorithms: Challenges Towards Smart Manufacturing

    Collecting, processing, analyzing, and driving knowledge from large-scale real-time data is now realized with the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Deep Learning (DL). The breakthrough of Industry 4.0 lays a foundation for intelligent manufacturing. However, implementation challenges of scheduling algorithms in the context of smart manufacturing are not yet comprehensively studied. The purpose of this study is to show the scheduling No.s that need to be considered in the smart manufacturing paradigm. To attain this objective, the literature review is conducted in five stages using publish or perish tools from different sources such as Scopus, Pubmed, Crossref, and Google Scholar. As a result, the first contribution of this study is a critical analysis of existing production scheduling algorithms\u27 characteristics and limitations from the viewpoint of smart manufacturing. The other contribution is to suggest the best strategies for selecting scheduling algorithms in a real-world scenario

    Solving Integrated Process Planning, Dynamic Scheduling, and Due Date Assignment Using Metaheuristic Algorithms

    Because the alternative process plans have significant contributions to the production efficiency of a manufacturing system, researchers have studied the integration of manufacturing functions, which can be divided into two groups, namely, integrated process planning and scheduling (IPPS) and scheduling with due date assignment (SWDDA). Although IPPS and SWDDA are well-known and solved problems in the literature, there are limited works on integration of process planning, scheduling, and due date assignment (IPPSDDA). In this study, due date assignment function was added to IPPS in a dynamic manufacturing environment. And the studied problem was introduced as dynamic integrated process planning, scheduling, and due date assignment (DIPPSDDA). The objective function of DIPPSDDA is to minimize earliness and tardiness (E/T) and determine due dates for each job. Furthermore, four different pure metaheuristic algorithms which are genetic algorithm (GA), tabu algorithm (TA), simulated annealing (SA), and their hybrid (combination) algorithms GA/SA and GA/TA have been developed to facilitate and optimize DIPPSDDA on the 8 different sized shop floors. The performance comparisons of the algorithms for each shop floor have been given to show the efficiency and effectiveness of the algorithms used. In conclusion, computational results show that the proposed combination algorithms are competitive, give better results than pure metaheuristics, and can effectively generate good solutions for DIPPSDDA problems

    Data-Driven Dispatching Rules Mining and Real-Time Decision-Making Methodology in Intelligent Manufacturing Shop Floor with Uncertainty

In this paper, a novel closed-loop scheduling framework is proposed to achieve real-time decision making by calling the appropriate data-driven dispatching rules at each rescheduling point. This framework contains four parts: offline training, online decision-making, data base and rules base. In the offline training part, the potential and appropriate dispatching rules with managers’ expectations are explored successfully by an improved gene expression program (IGEP) from the historical production data, not just the available or predictable information of the shop floor. In the online decision-making part, the intelligent shop floor will implement the scheduling scheme which is scheduled by the appropriate dispatching rules from rules base and store the production data into the data base. This approach is evaluated in a scenario of the intelligent job shop with random jobs arrival. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed method outperformed the existing well-known single and combination dispatching rules or the discovered dispatching rules via metaheuristic algorithm in term of makespan, total flow time and tardiness

    A research survey: review of flexible job shop scheduling techniques

    In the last 25 years, extensive research has been carried out addressing the flexible job shop scheduling (JSS) problem. A variety of techniques ranging from exact methods to hybrid techniques have been used in this research. The paper aims at presenting the development of flexible JSS and a consolidated survey of various techniques that have been employed since 1990 for problem resolution. The paper comprises evaluation of publications and research methods used in various research papers. Finally, conclusions are drawn based on performed survey results. A total of 404 distinct publications were found addressing the FJSSP. Some of the research papers presented more than one technique/algorithm to solve the problem that is categorized into 410 different applications. Selected time period of these research papers is between 1990 and February 2014. Articles were searched mainly on major databases such as SpringerLink, Science Direct, IEEE Xplore, Scopus, EBSCO, etc. and other web sources.
