An uncued brain-computer interface using reservoir computing
Brain-Computer Interfaces are an important and promising avenue for possible next-generation assistive devices. In this article, we show how Reservoir Comput- ing – a computationally efficient way of training recurrent neural networks – com- bined with a novel feature selection algorithm based on Common Spatial Patterns can be used to drastically improve performance in an uncued motor imagery based Brain-Computer Interface (BCI). The objective of this BCI is to label each sample of EEG data as either motor imagery class 1 (e.g. left hand), motor imagery class 2 (e.g. right hand) or a rest state (i.e., no motor imagery). When comparing the re- sults of the proposed method with the results from the BCI Competition IV (where this dataset was introduced), it turns out that the proposed method outperforms the winner of the competition
Hierarchical Temporal Representation in Linear Reservoir Computing
Recently, studies on deep Reservoir Computing (RC) highlighted the role of
layering in deep recurrent neural networks (RNNs). In this paper, the use of
linear recurrent units allows us to bring more evidence on the intrinsic
hierarchical temporal representation in deep RNNs through frequency analysis
applied to the state signals. The potentiality of our approach is assessed on
the class of Multiple Superimposed Oscillator tasks. Furthermore, our
investigation provides useful insights to open a discussion on the main aspects

Reservoir computing using a delayed feedback system: towards photonic implementations
Delayed feedback systems are known to exhibit a rich dynamical behavior, showing a wide variety of dynamical regimes. We use this richness to implement reservoir computing, a processing concept in machine learning. In this paper we demonstrate the proof of principle on an electronic system, however the approach is readily transferable to photonics, promising fast and computationally efficient all-optical processing. Using only one single node with delayed feedback instead of an entire network of nodes, we succeed in obtaining state-of-the-art results on benchmarks such as spoken digit recognition and system identification
Echo State Queueing Network: a new reservoir computing learning tool
In the last decade, a new computational paradigm was introduced in the field
of Machine Learning, under the name of Reservoir Computing (RC). RC models are
neural networks which a recurrent part (the reservoir) that does not
participate in the learning process, and the rest of the system where no
recurrence (no neural circuit) occurs. This approach has grown rapidly due to
its success in solving learning tasks and other computational applications.
Some success was also observed with another recently proposed neural network
designed using Queueing Theory, the Random Neural Network (RandNN). Both
approaches have good properties and identified drawbacks. In this paper, we
propose a new RC model called Echo State Queueing Network (ESQN), where we use
ideas coming from RandNNs for the design of the reservoir. ESQNs consist in
ESNs where the reservoir has a new dynamics inspired by recurrent RandNNs. The
paper positions ESQNs in the global Machine Learning area, and provides
examples of their use and performances. We show on largely used benchmarks that
ESQNs are very accurate tools, and we illustrate how they compare with standard

System Identification of multi-rotor UAVs using echo state networks
Controller design for aircraft with unusual configurations presents unique challenges, particularly in extracting valid mathematical models of the MRUAVs behaviour. System Identification is a collection of techniques for extracting an accurate mathematical model of a dynamic system from experimental input-output data. This can entail parameter identification only (known as grey-box modelling) or more generally full parameter/structural identification of the nonlinear mapping (known as black-box). In this paper we propose a new method for black-box identification of the non-linear dynamic model of a small MRUAV using Echo State Networks (ESN), a novel approach to train Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN)
Programming multi-level quantum gates in disordered computing reservoirs via machine learning and TensorFlow
Novel machine learning computational tools open new perspectives for quantum
information systems. Here we adopt the open-source programming library
TensorFlow to design multi-level quantum gates including a computing reservoir
represented by a random unitary matrix. In optics, the reservoir is a
disordered medium or a multi-modal fiber. We show that trainable operators at
the input and the readout enable one to realize multi-level gates. We study
various qudit gates, including the scaling properties of the algorithms with
the size of the reservoir. Despite an initial low slop learning stage,
TensorFlow turns out to be an extremely versatile resource for designing gates
with complex media, including different models that use spatial light
modulators with quantized modulation levels.Comment: Added a new section and a new figure about implementation of the

The body as a reservoir: locomotion and sensing with linear feedback
It is known that mass-spring nets have computational power and can be trained to reproduce oscillating patterns.
In this work, we extend this idea to locomotion and sensing. We simulate systems made out of bars and springs and show that stable gaits can be maintained by these structures with only linear feedback.
We then conduct a classification experiment in which the system has to distinguish terrains while maintaining an oscillatory pattern.
These experiments indicate that the control of compliant robots can be simplified if one exploits the computational power of the body’s dynamics
