    A Framework for Incentive Compatible Topology Control in Non-Cooperative Wireless Multi-Hop Networks

    In this paper we consider the problem of building and maintaining a network topology with certain desirable features in a wireless multi-hop network where nodes behave like selfish agents. We first provide examples showing that existing topology control approaches are not resilient to strategic node behavior, indicating the need of considering possible selfish node behavior at the design stage. Given this observation, we propose a general framework that can be used as a guideline in the design of incentive compatible topology control protocols. As examples of application of our framework to specific topology control protocols, we present incentive compatible distributed algorithms for building the minimum spanning tree (MST) and the k-closest neighbors graph, which are very well-known topology control approaches. To the best of our knowledge, the ones presented in this paper are the first incentive compatible realizations of topology control presented in the literature

    Design and Development of an Energy Efficient Multimedia Cloud Data Center with Minimal SLA Violation

    Multimedia computing (MC) is rising as a nascent computing paradigm to process multimedia applications and provide efficient multimedia cloud services with optimal Quality of Service (QoS) to the multimedia cloud users. But, the growing popularity of MC is affecting the climate. Because multimedia cloud data centers consume an enormous amount of energy to provide services, it harms the environment due to carbon dioxide emissions. Virtual machine (VM) migration can effectively address this issue; it reduces the energy consumption of multimedia cloud data centers. Due to the reduction of Energy Consumption (EC), the Service Level Agreement violation (SLAV) may increase. An efficient VM selection plays a crucial role in maintaining the stability between EC and SLAV. This work highlights a novel VM selection policy based on identifying the Maximum value among the differences of the Sum of Squares Utilization Rate (MdSSUR) parameter to reduce the EC of multimedia cloud data centers with minimal SLAV. The proposed MdSSUR VM selection policy has been evaluated using real workload traces in CloudSim. The simulation result of the proposed MdSSUR VM selection policy demonstrates the rate of improvements of the EC, the number of VM migrations, and the SLAV by 28.37%, 89.47%, and 79.14%, respectively

    Multihop relay techniques for communication range extension in near-field magnetic induction communication systems

    In this paper, multihop relaying in RF-based com munications and near field magnetic induction communication (NFMIC) is discussed. Three multihop relay strategies for NFMIC are proposed: Non Line of Sight Magnetic Induction Relay (NLoS-MI Relay), Non Line of Sight Master/Assistant Magnetic Induction Relay1 (NLoS-MAMI Relay1) and Non Line of Sight Master/Assistant Magnetic Induction Relay2 (NLoSMAMI Relay2). In the first approach only one node contributes to the communication, while in the other two techniques (which are based on a master-assistant strategy), two relaying nodes are employed. This paper shows that these three techniques can be used to overcome the problem of dead spots within a body area network and extend the communication range without increasing the transmission power and the antenna size or decreasing receiver sensitivity. The impact of the separation distance between the nodes on the achievable RSS and channel data rate is evaluated for the three techniques. It is demonstrated that the technique which is most effective depends on the specific network topology. Optimum selection of nodes as relay master and assistant based on the location of the nodes is discussed. The paper also studies the impact of the quality factor on achievable data rate. It is shown that to obtain the highest data rate, the optimum quality factor needs to be determined for each proposed cooperative communication method. © 2013 ACADEMY PUBLISHER
