Efficient Kernel-based Two-Dimensional Principal Component Analysis for Smile Stages Recognition
Recently, an approach called two-dimensional principal component analysis (2DPCA) has been proposed for smile stages representation and recognition. The essence of 2DPCA is that it computes the eigenvectors of the so-called image covariance matrix without matrix-to-vector conversion so the size of the image covariance matrix are much smaller, easier to evaluate covariance matrix, computation cost is reduced and the performance is also improved than traditional PCA. In an effort to improve and perfect the performance of smile stages recognition, in this paper, we propose efficient Kernel based 2DPCA concepts. The Kernelization of 2DPCA can be benefit to develop the nonlinear structures in the input data. This paper discusses comparison of standard Kernel based 2DPCA and efficient Kernel based 2DPCA for smile stages recognition. The results of experiments show that Kernel based 2DPCA achieve better performance in comparison with the other approaches. While the use of efficient Kernel based 2DPCA can speed up the training procedure of standard Kernel based 2DPCA thus the algorithm can achieve much more computational efficiency and remarkably save the memory consuming compared to the standard Kernel based 2DPCA
Biometric Applications Based on Multiresolution Analysis Tools
This dissertation is dedicated to the development of new algorithms for biometric applications based on multiresolution analysis tools. Biometric is a unique, measurable characteristic of a human being that can be used to automatically recognize an individual or verify an individual\u27s identity. Biometrics can measure physiological, behavioral, physical and chemical characteristics of an individual. Physiological characteristics are based on measurements derived from direct measurement of a part of human body, such as, face, fingerprint, iris, retina etc. We focussed our investigations to fingerprint and face recognition since these two biometric modalities are used in conjunction to obtain reliable identification by various border security and law enforcement agencies. We developed an efficient and robust human face recognition algorithm for potential law enforcement applications. A generic fingerprint compression algorithm based on state of the art multiresolution analysis tool to speed up data archiving and recognition was also proposed. Finally, we put forth a new fingerprint matching algorithm by generating an efficient set of fingerprint features to minimize false matches and improve identification accuracy. Face recognition algorithms were proposed based on curvelet transform using kernel based principal component analysis and bidirectional two-dimensional principal component analysis and numerous experiments were performed using popular human face databases. Significant improvements in recognition accuracy were achieved and the proposed methods drastically outperformed conventional face recognition systems that employed linear one-dimensional principal component analysis. Compression schemes based on wave atoms decomposition were proposed and major improvements in peak signal to noise ratio were obtained in comparison to Federal Bureau of Investigation\u27s wavelet scalar quantization scheme. Improved performance was more pronounced and distinct at higher compression ratios. Finally, a fingerprint matching algorithm based on wave atoms decomposition, bidirectional two dimensional principal component analysis and extreme learning machine was proposed and noteworthy improvements in accuracy were realized

A Family of Maximum Margin Criterion for Adaptive Learning
In recent years, pattern analysis plays an important role in data mining and
recognition, and many variants have been proposed to handle complicated
scenarios. In the literature, it has been quite familiar with high
dimensionality of data samples, but either such characteristics or large data
have become usual sense in real-world applications. In this work, an improved
maximum margin criterion (MMC) method is introduced firstly. With the new
definition of MMC, several variants of MMC, including random MMC, layered MMC,
2D^2 MMC, are designed to make adaptive learning applicable. Particularly, the
MMC network is developed to learn deep features of images in light of simple
deep networks. Experimental results on a diversity of data sets demonstrate the
discriminant ability of proposed MMC methods are compenent to be adopted in
complicated application scenarios.Comment: 14 page
On the Subspace of Image Gradient Orientations
We introduce the notion of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of image
gradient orientations. As image data is typically noisy, but noise is
substantially different from Gaussian, traditional PCA of pixel intensities
very often fails to estimate reliably the low-dimensional subspace of a given
data population. We show that replacing intensities with gradient orientations
and the norm with a cosine-based distance measure offers, to some
extend, a remedy to this problem. Our scheme requires the eigen-decomposition
of a covariance matrix and is as computationally efficient as standard
PCA. We demonstrate some of its favorable properties on robust subspace
estimation
