    Epidemiological and awareness study of tuberculosis in Batu Pahat, Johor, Malaysia

    Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the serious infectious diseases and has been characterized worldwide as an epidemic by World Health Organization (WHO). TB is still a public health problem in Malaysia. Baseline information on the disease situation is one of the prerequisites for the development of appropriate control measures. The cornerstone in proper management of TB patients is ensuring high awareness in communities about TB. Thus the current research is directed to investigate the epidemiology of TB, determined the level of public awareness of TB and some factors that are responsible for the emergence of TB. Retrospective method was used for collecting epidemiological data from the Batu Pahat chest clinic. All registered TB patients (total of 1213 patients) from 2008 to 2013 in Batu Pahat Chest Clinic were included in the study. On the other hand, the awareness study was carried out by the use of questionnaires. A two-stage cluster sampling method was used. 600 respondents were targeted which form the study sample. However, 498 questionnaires were returned. Descriptive data analysis was employed to describe the results in frequency and percentage distribution. It was discovered that there was an annually increase in TB incidence with pulmonary TB the most common infection in Batu Pahat. Almost all (92.7%) the TB cases were new. On the other hand, majority (87.0%) of respondents have heard about TB. Common symptoms identified by respondents were coughing for over 2 weeks (51.8%), hemoptysis (49.2%) and difficulty in breathing (50.2%). Smoking cigarette (74.3%), living with individual having chronic cough (71.5%) and HIV/AIDS (65.7%) were the common risk factors of TB identified by respondents. Most of the respondents (83.5%) were aware of the existence of TB drugs. However, the standard DOTs treatment duration of 6-9 months was identified by few (12.4%) respondents. This research provided information regarding TB status in Batu Pahat. The level of awareness among Batu Pahat general public about TB is fairly good. Meanwhile, more need to be done especially on diabetes as the risk factors of TB and treatment duration

    Study on utilization of advanced composites in fuselage structures of large transports

    The potential for utilizing advanced composites in fuselage structures of large transports was assessed. Six fuselage design concepts were selected and evaluated in terms of structural performance, weight, and manufacturing development and costs. Two concepts were selected that merit further consideration for composite fuselage application. These concepts are: (1) a full depth honeycomb design with no stringers, and (2) an I section stringer stiffened laminate skin design. Weight reductions due to applying composites to the fuselages of commercial and military transports were calculated. The benefits of applying composites to a fleet of military transports were determined. Significant technology issues pertinent to composite fuselage structures were identified and evaluated. Program plans for resolving the technology issues were developed

    Design and commission of an experimental test rig to apply a full-scale pressure load on composite sandwich panels representative of aircraft secondary structure

    This paper describes the design of a test rig, which is used to apply a representative pressure load to a full-scale composite sandwich secondary aircraft structure. A generic panel was designed with features to represent those in the composite sandwich secondary aircraft structure. To provide full-field strain data from the panels, the test rig was designed for use with optical measurement techniques such as thermoelastic stress analysis (TSA) and digital image correlation (DIC). TSA requires a cyclic load to be applied to a structure for the measurement of the strain state; therefore, the test rig has been designed to be mounted on a standard servo-hydraulic test machine. As both TSA and DIC require an uninterrupted view of the surface of the test panel, an important consideration in the design is facilitating the optical access for the two techniques. To aid the test rig design a finite element (FE) model was produced. The model provides information on the deflections that must be accommodated by the test rig, and ensures that the stress and strain levels developed in the panel when loaded in the test rig would be sufficient for measurement using TSA and DIC. Finally, initial tests using the test rig have shown it to be capable of achieving the required pressure and maintaining a cyclic load. It was also demonstrated that both TSA and DIC data can be collected from the panels under load, which are used to validate the stress and deflection derived from the FE model

    Experimental Measurement and Finite Element Simulation of Springback in Stamping Aluminum Alloy Sheets for Auto-Body Panel Application

    Use of weight-saving materials to produce lightweight components with enhanced dimensional control is important to the automotive industry. This has increased the need to understand the material behavior with respect to the forming process at the microstructural level. A test matrix was developed based on the orthogonal array of Taguchi design of experiment (DOE) approach. Experiments were conducted for the V-bending process using 6022-T4 AA to study the variation of springback due to both process and material parameters such as bend radius, sheet thickness, grain size, plastic anisotropy, heat treatment, punching speeds, and time. The design of experiments was used to evaluate the predominate parameters for a specific lot of sheet metal. It was observed that bend radius had greatest effect on springback. Next, finite element simulation of springback using ANSYS implicit code was conducted to explore the limits regarding process control by boundary values versus material parameters. 2-D finite element modeling was considered in the springback simulations. A multilinear isotropic material model was used where the true stress-strain material description was input in discrete form. Experimental results compare well with the simulated predictions. It was found that the microstructure of the material used in this study was processed for sheet metal forming process
