Characteristic formulas over intermediate logics
We expand the notion of characteristic formula to infinite finitely
presentable subdirectly irreducible algebras. We prove that there is a
continuum of varieties of Heyting algebras containing infinite finitely
presentable subdirectly irreducible algebras. Moreover, we prove that there is
a continuum of intermediate logics that can be axiomatized by characteristic
formulas of infinite algebras while they are not axiomatizable by standard
Jankov formulas. We give the examples of intermediate logics that are not
axiomatizable by characteristic formulas of infinite algebras. Also, using the
Goedel-McKinsey-Tarski translation we extend these results to the varieties of
interior algebras and normal extensions of S
Degrees of the finite model property: the antidichotomy theorem
A classic result in modal logic, known as the Blok Dichotomy Theorem, states
that the degree of incompleteness of a normal extension of the basic modal
logic is or . It is a long-standing open problem
whether Blok Dichotomy holds for normal extensions of other prominent modal
logics (such as or ) or for extensions of the intuitionistic
propositional calculus . In this paper, we introduce the notion
of the degree of finite model property (fmp), which is a natural variation of
the degree of incompleteness. It is a consequence of Blok Dichotomy Theorem
that the degree of fmp of a normal extension of remains or
. In contrast, our main result establishes the following
Antidichotomy Theorem for the degree of fmp for extensions of :
each nonzero cardinal such that or is realized as the degree of fmp of some extension of
. We then use the Blok-Esakia theorem to establish the same
Antidichotomy Theorem for normal extensions of and
Decidability of admissibility:On a problem by friedman and its solution by rybakov
Rybakov (1984) proved that the admissible rules of IPC are decidable. We give a proof of the same theorem, using the same core idea, but couched in the many notions that have been developed in the mean time. In particular, we illustrate how the argument can be interpreted as using refinements of the notions of exactness and extendibility
Free Heyting algebra endomorphisms: Ruitenburg’s Theorem and beyond
Ruitenburg\u2019s Theorem says that every endomorphism f of a finitely generated free Heyting algebra is ulti- mately periodic if f fixes all the generators but one. More precisely, there is N 65 0 such that f^N+2 = f^N , thus the period equals 2. We give a semantic proof of this theorem, using duality techniques and bounded bisimulation ranks. By the same techniques, we tackle investigation of arbitrary endomorphisms of free algebras. We show that they are not, in general, ultimately periodic. Yet, when they are (e.g. in the case of locally finite subvarieties), the period can be explicitly bounded as function of the cardinality of the set of generators
Finitely generated free Heyting algebras via Birkhoff duality and coalgebra
Algebras axiomatized entirely by rank 1 axioms are algebras for a functor and
thus the free algebras can be obtained by a direct limit process. Dually, the
final coalgebras can be obtained by an inverse limit process. In order to
explore the limits of this method we look at Heyting algebras which have mixed
rank 0-1 axiomatizations. We will see that Heyting algebras are special in that
they are almost rank 1 axiomatized and can be handled by a slight variant of
the rank 1 coalgebraic methods
