Decomposition by Successive Convex Approximation: A Unifying Approach for Linear Transceiver Design in Heterogeneous Networks
We study the downlink linear precoder design problem in a multi-cell dense
heterogeneous network (HetNet). The problem is formulated as a general
sum-utility maximization (SUM) problem, which includes as special cases many
practical precoder design problems such as multi-cell coordinated linear
precoding, full and partial per-cell coordinated multi-point transmission,
zero-forcing precoding and joint BS clustering and beamforming/precoding. The
SUM problem is difficult due to its non-convexity and the tight coupling of the
users' precoders. In this paper we propose a novel convex approximation
technique to approximate the original problem by a series of convex
subproblems, each of which decomposes across all the cells. The convexity of
the subproblems allows for efficient computation, while their decomposability
leads to distributed implementation. {Our approach hinges upon the
identification of certain key convexity properties of the sum-utility
objective, which allows us to transform the problem into a form that can be
solved using a popular algorithmic framework called BSUM (Block Successive
Upper-Bound Minimization).} Simulation experiments show that the proposed
framework is effective for solving interference management problems in large

Distributed Internet security and measurement
The Internet has developed into an important economic, military, academic, and social resource. It is a complex network, comprised of tens of thousands of independently operated networks, called Autonomous Systems (ASes). A significant strength of the Internet\u27s design, one which enabled its rapid growth in terms of users and bandwidth, is that its underlying protocols (such as IP, TCP, and BGP) are distributed. Users and networks alike can attach and detach from the Internet at will, without causing major disruptions to global Internet connectivity. This dissertation shows that the Internet\u27s distributed, and often redundant structure, can be exploited to increase the security of its protocols, particularly BGP (the Internet\u27s interdomain routing protocol). It introduces Pretty Good BGP, an anomaly detection protocol coupled with an automated response that can protect individual networks from BGP attacks. It also presents statistical measurements of the Internet\u27s structure and uses them to create a model of Internet growth. This work could be used, for instance, to test upcoming routing protocols on ensemble of large, Internet-like graphs. Finally, this dissertation shows that while the Internet is designed to be agnostic to political influence, it is actually quite centralized at the country level. With the recent rise in country-level Internet policies, such as nation-wide censorship and warrantless wiretaps, this centralized control could have significant impact on international reachability
Exploring foundations for using simulations in IS research
Simulation has been adopted in many disciplines as a means for understanding the behavior of a system by imitating it through an artificial object that exhibits a nearly identical behavior. Although simulation approaches have been widely adopted for theory building in disciplines such as engineering, computer science, management, and social sciences, their potential in the IS field is often overlooked. The aim of this paper is to understand how different simulation approaches are used in IS research, thereby providing insights and methodological recommendations for future studies. A literature review of simulation studies published in top-tier IS journals leads to the definition of three classes of simulations, namely the self-organizing, the elementary, and the situated. A set of stylized facts is identified for characterizing the ways in which the premise, the inference, and the contribution are presented in IS simulation studies. As a result, this study provides guidance to future simulation researchers in designing and presenting findings

Improving next-generation wireless network performance and reliability with deep learning
A rudimentary question whether machine learning in general, or deep learning in particular, could add to the well-established field of wireless communications, which has been evolving for close to a century, is often raised. While the use of deep learning based methods is likely to help build intelligent wireless solutions, this use becomes particularly challenging for the lower layers in the wireless communication stack. The introduction of the fifth generation of wireless communications (5G) has triggered the demand for “network intelligence” to support its promises for very high data rates and extremely low latency. Consequently, 5G wireless operators are faced with the challenges of network complexity, diversification of services, and personalized user experience. Industry standards have created enablers (such as the network data analytics function), but these enablers focus on post-mortem analysis at higher stack layers and have a periodicity in the time scale of seconds (or larger). The goal of this dissertation is to show a solution for these challenges and how a data-driven approach using deep learning could add to the field of wireless communications. In particular, I propose intelligent predictive and prescriptive abilities to boost reliability and eliminate performance bottlenecks in 5G cellular networks and beyond, show contributions that justify the value of deep learning in wireless communications across several different layers, and offer in-depth analysis and comparisons with baselines and industry standards. First, to improve multi-antenna network reliability against wireless impairments with power control and interference coordination for both packetized voice and beamformed data bearers, I propose the use of a joint beamforming, power control, and interference coordination algorithm based on deep reinforcement learning. This algorithm uses a string of bits and logic operations to enable simultaneous actions to be performed by the reinforcement learning agent. Consequently, a joint reward function is also proposed. I compare the performance of my proposed algorithm with the brute force approach and show that similar performance is achievable but with faster run-time as the number of transmit antennas increases. Second, in enhancing the performance of coordinated multipoint, I propose the use of deep learning binary classification to learn a surrogate function to trigger a second transmission stream instead of depending on the popular signal to interference plus noise measurement quantity. This surrogate function improves the users' sum-rate through focusing on pre-logarithmic terms in the sum-rate formula, which have larger impact on this rate. Third, performance of band switching can be improved without the need for a full channel estimation. My proposal of using deep learning to classify the quality of two frequency bands prior to granting the band switching leads to a significant improvement in users' throughput. This is due to the elimination of the industry standard measurement gap requirement—a period of silence where no data is sent to the users so they could measure the frequency bands before switching. In this dissertation, a group of algorithms for wireless network performance and reliability for downlink are proposed. My results show that the introduction of user coordinates enhance the accuracy of the predictions made with deep learning. Also, the choice of signal to interference plus noise ratio as the optimization objective may not always be the best choice to improve user throughput rates. Further, exploiting the spatial correlation of channels in different frequency bands can improve certain network procedures without the need for perfect knowledge of the per-band channel state information. Street Smart in 5G : Vehicular Applications, Communication, and Computing
Recent advances in information technology have revolutionized the automotive industry, paving the way for next-generation smart vehicular mobility. Specifically, vehicles, roadside units, and other road users can collaborate to deliver novel services and applications that leverage, for example, big vehicular data and machine learning. Relatedly, fifth-generation cellular networks (5G) are being developed and deployed for low-latency, high-reliability, and high bandwidth communications. While 5G adjacent technologies such as edge computing allow for data offloading and computation at the edge of the network thus ensuring even lower latency and context-awareness. Overall, these developments provide a rich ecosystem for the evolution of vehicular applications, communications, and computing. Therefore in this work, we aim at providing a comprehensive overview of the state of research on vehicular computing in the emerging age of 5G and big data. In particular, this paper highlights several vehicular applications, investigates their requirements, details the enabling communication technologies and computing paradigms, and studies data analytics pipelines and the integration of these enabling technologies in response to application requirements.Peer reviewe

An Emergent Architecture for Scaling Decentralized Communication Systems (DCS)
With recent technological advancements now accelerating the mobile and wireless Internet solution space, a ubiquitous computing Internet is well within the research and industrial community's design reach - a decentralized system design, which is not solely driven by static physical models and sound engineering principals, but more dynamically, perhaps sub-optimally at initial deployment and socially-influenced in its evolution. To complement today's Internet system, this thesis proposes a Decentralized Communication System (DCS) architecture with the following characteristics: flat physical topologies with numerous compute oriented and communication intensive nodes in the network with many of these nodes operating in multiple functional roles; self-organizing virtual structures formed through alternative mobility scenarios and capable of serving ad hoc networking formations; emergent operations and control with limited dependency on centralized control and management administration. Today, decentralized systems are not commercially scalable or viable for broad adoption in the same way we have to come to rely on the Internet or telephony systems. The premise in this thesis is that DCS can reach high levels of resilience, usefulness, scale that the industry has come to experience with traditional centralized systems by exploiting the following properties: (i.) network density and topological diversity; (ii.) self-organization and emergent attributes; (iii.) cooperative and dynamic infrastructure; and (iv.) node role diversity. This thesis delivers key contributions towards advancing the current state of the art in decentralized systems. First, we present the vision and a conceptual framework for DCS. Second, the thesis demonstrates that such a framework and concept architecture is feasible by prototyping a DCS platform that exhibits the above properties or minimally, demonstrates that these properties are feasible through prototyped network services. Third, this work expands on an alternative approach to network clustering using hierarchical virtual clusters (HVC) to facilitate self-organizing network structures. With increasing network complexity, decentralized systems can generally lead to unreliable and irregular service quality, especially given unpredictable node mobility and traffic dynamics. The HVC framework is an architectural strategy to address organizational disorder associated with traditional decentralized systems. The proposed HVC architecture along with the associated promotional methodology organizes distributed control and management services by leveraging alternative organizational models (e.g., peer-to-peer (P2P), centralized or tiered) in hierarchical and virtual fashion. Through simulation and analytical modeling, we demonstrate HVC efficiencies in DCS structural scalability and resilience by comparing static and dynamic HVC node configurations against traditional physical configurations based on P2P, centralized or tiered structures. Next, an emergent management architecture for DCS exploiting HVC for self-organization, introduces emergence as an operational approach to scaling DCS services for state management and policy control. In this thesis, emergence scales in hierarchical fashion using virtual clustering to create multiple tiers of local and global separation for aggregation, distribution and network control. Emergence is an architectural objective, which HVC introduces into the proposed self-management design for scaling and stability purposes. Since HVC expands the clustering model hierarchically and virtually, a clusterhead (CH) node, positioned as a proxy for a specific cluster or grouped DCS nodes, can also operate in a micro-capacity as a peer member of an organized cluster in a higher tier. As the HVC promotional process continues through the hierarchy, each tier of the hierarchy exhibits emergent behavior. With HVC as the self-organizing structural framework, a multi-tiered, emergent architecture enables the decentralized management strategy to improve scaling objectives that traditionally challenge decentralized systems. The HVC organizational concept and the emergence properties align with and the view of the human brain's neocortex layering structure of sensory storage, prediction and intelligence. It is the position in this thesis, that for DCS to scale and maintain broad stability, network control and management must strive towards an emergent or natural approach. While today's models for network control and management have proven to lack scalability and responsiveness based on pure centralized models, it is unlikely that singular organizational models can withstand the operational complexities associated with DCS. In this work, we integrate emergence and learning-based methods in a cooperative computing manner towards realizing DCS self-management. However, unlike many existing work in these areas which break down with increased network complexity and dynamics, the proposed HVC framework is utilized to offset these issues through effective separation, aggregation and asynchronous processing of both distributed state and policy. Using modeling techniques, we demonstrate that such architecture is feasible and can improve the operational robustness of DCS. The modeling emphasis focuses on demonstrating the operational advantages of an HVC-based organizational strategy for emergent management services (i.e., reachability, availability or performance). By integrating the two approaches, the DCS architecture forms a scalable system to address the challenges associated with traditional decentralized systems. The hypothesis is that the emergent management system architecture will improve the operational scaling properties of DCS-based applications and services. Additionally, we demonstrate structural flexibility of HVC as an underlying service infrastructure to build and deploy DCS applications and layered services. The modeling results demonstrate that an HVC-based emergent management and control system operationally outperforms traditional structural organizational models. In summary, this thesis brings together the above contributions towards delivering a scalable, decentralized system for Internet mobile computing and communications
