    Image fusion techniqes for remote sensing applications

    Image fusion refers to the acquisition, processing and synergistic combination of information provided by various sensors or by the same sensor in many measuring contexts. The aim of this survey paper is to describe three typical applications of data fusion in remote sensing. The first study case considers the problem of the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Interferometry, where a pair of antennas are used to obtain an elevation map of the observed scene; the second one refers to the fusion of multisensor and multitemporal (Landsat Thematic Mapper and SAR) images of the same site acquired at different times, by using neural networks; the third one presents a processor to fuse multifrequency, multipolarization and mutiresolution SAR images, based on wavelet transform and multiscale Kalman filter. Each study case presents also results achieved by the proposed techniques applied to real data

    Algorithms for sensor validation and multisensor fusion

    Existing techniques for sensor validation and sensor fusion are often based on analytical sensor models. Such models can be arbitrarily complex and consequently Gaussian distributions are often assumed, generally with a detrimental effect on overall system performance. A holistic approach has therefore been adopted in order to develop two novel and complementary approaches to sensor validation and fusion based on empirical data. The first uses the Nadaraya-Watson kernel estimator to provide competitive sensor fusion. The new algorithm is shown to reliably detect and compensate for bias errors, spike errors, hardover faults, drift faults and erratic operation, affecting up to three of the five sensors in the array. The inherent smoothing action of the kernel estimator provides effective noise cancellation and the fused result is more accurate than the single 'best sensor'. A Genetic Algorithm has been used to optimise the Nadaraya-Watson fuser design. The second approach uses analytical redundancy to provide the on-line sensor status output μH∈[0,1], where μH=1 indicates the sensor output is valid and μH=0 when the sensor has failed. This fuzzy measure is derived from change detection parameters based on spectral analysis of the sensor output signal. The validation scheme can reliably detect a wide range of sensor fault conditions. An appropriate context dependent fusion operator can then be used to perform competitive, cooperative or complementary sensor fusion, with a status output from the fuser providing a useful qualitative indication of the status of the sensors used to derive the fused result. The operation of both schemes is illustrated using data obtained from an array of thick film metal oxide pH sensor electrodes. An ideal pH electrode will sense only the activity of hydrogen ions, however the selectivity of the metal oxide device is worse than the conventional glass electrode. The use of sensor fusion can therefore reduce measurement uncertainty by combining readings from multiple pH sensors having complementary responses. The array can be conveniently fabricated by screen printing sensors using different metal oxides onto a single substrate

McCarthy DOI: https://doi.org/10.2478/ijafr-2019-0006 | Published online: 11 Oct 2019 PDF Abstract Article PDF References Recommendations Abstract The capability of Sentinel 1 C-band (5 cm wavelength) synthetic aperture radio detection and ranging (RADAR) (abbreviated as SAR) for flood mapping is demonstrated, and this approach is used to map the extent of the extensive floods that occurred throughout the Republic of Ireland in the winter of 2015–2016. Thirty-three Sentinel 1 images were used to map the area and duration of floods over a 6-mo period from November 2015 to April 2016. Flood maps for 11 separate dates charted the development and persistence of floods nationally. The maximum flood extent during this period was estimated to be ~24,356 ha. The depth of rainfall influenced the magnitude of flood in the preceding 5 d and over more extended periods to a lesser degree. Reduced photosynthetic activity on farms affected by flooding was observed in Landsat 8 vegetation index difference images compared to the previous spring. The accuracy of the flood map was assessed against reports of flooding from affected farms, as well as other satellite-derived maps from Copernicus Emergency Management Service and Sentinel 2. Monte Carlo simulated elevation data (20 m resolution, 2.5 m root mean square error [RMSE]) were used to estimate the flood’s depth and volume. Although the modelled flood height showed a strong correlation with the measured river heights, differences of several metres were observed. Future mapping strategies are discussed, which include high–temporal-resolution soil moisture data, as part of an integrated multisensor approach to flood response over a range of spatial scales

    Multisensor data fusion for joint people tracking and identification with a service robot

    Tracking and recognizing people are essential skills modern service robots have to be provided with. The two tasks are generally performed independently, using ad-hoc solutions that first estimate the location of humans and then proceed with their identification. The solution presented in this paper, instead, is a general framework for tracking and recognizing people simultaneously with a mobile robot, where the estimates of the human location and identity are fused using probabilistic techniques. Our approach takes inspiration from recent implementations of joint tracking and classification, where the considered targets are mainly vehicles and aircrafts in military and civilian applications. We illustrate how people can be robustly tracked and recognized with a service robot using an improved histogram-based detection and multisensor data fusion. Some experiments in real challenging scenarios show the good performance of our solution

    Potential of using remote sensing techniques for global assessment of water footprint of crops

    Remote sensing has long been a useful tool in global applications, since it provides physically-based, worldwide, and consistent spatial information. This paper discusses the potential of using these techniques in the research field of water management, particularly for ‘Water Footprint’ (WF) studies. The WF of a crop is defined as the volume of water consumed for its production, where green and blue WF stand for rain and irrigation water usage, respectively. In this paper evapotranspiration, precipitation, water storage, runoff and land use are identified as key variables to potentially be estimated by remote sensing and used for WF assessment. A mass water balance is proposed to calculate the volume of irrigation applied, and green and blue WF are obtained from the green and blue evapotranspiration components. The source of remote sensing data is described and a simplified example is included, which uses evapotranspiration estimates from the geostationary satellite Meteosat 9 and precipitation estimates obtained with the Climatic Prediction Center Morphing Technique (CMORPH). The combination of data in this approach brings several limitations with respect to discrepancies in spatial and temporal resolution and data availability, which are discussed in detail. This work provides new tools for global WF assessment and represents an innovative approach to global irrigation mapping, enabling the estimation of green and blue water use

New instruments and new sensors are discussed that can provide us with a large variety of new views of the real world. This huge amount of data has to be combined and integrated in a (computer-) model of this world. Multiple sources may give complimentary views of the world - consistent observations from different (and independent) data sources support each other and increase their credibility, while contradictions may be caused by noise, errors during processing, or misinterpretations, and can be identified as such. As a consequence, integration results are very reliable and represent a valid source of information for any geographical information system

    Radar networks: A review of features and challenges

    Networks of multiple radars are typically used for improving the coverage and tracking accuracy. Recently, such networks have facilitated deployment of commercial radars for civilian applications such as healthcare, gesture recognition, home security, and autonomous automobiles. They exploit advanced signal processing techniques together with efficient data fusion methods in order to yield high performance of event detection and tracking. This paper reviews outstanding features of radar networks, their challenges, and their state-of-the-art solutions from the perspective of signal processing.     On the possibility of automatic multisensor image registration

    International audienceMultisensor image registration is needed in a large number of applications of remote sensing imagery. The accuracy achieved with usual methods (manual control points extraction, estimation of an analytical deformation model) is not satisfactory for many applications where a subpixel accuracy for each pixel of the image is needed (change detection or image fusion, for instance). Unfortunately, there are few works in the literature about the fine registration of multisensor images and even less about the extension of approaches similar to those based on fine correlation for the case of monomodal imagery. In this paper, we analyze the problem of the automatic multisensor image registration and we introduce similarity measures which can replace the correlation coefficient in a deformation map estimation scheme. We show an example where the deformation map between a radar image and an optical one is fully automatically estimated

    Registration of Multisensor Images through a Conditional Generative Adversarial Network and a Correlation-Type Similarity Measure

    The automatic registration of multisensor remote sensing images is a highly challenging task due to the inherently different physical, statistical, and textural characteristics of the input data. Information-theoretic measures are often used to favor comparing local intensity distributions in the images. In this paper, a novel method based on the combination of a deep learning architecture and a correlation-type area-based functional is proposed for the registration of a multisensor pair of images, including an optical image and a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image. The method makes use of a conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN) in order to address image-to-image translation across the optical and SAR data sources. Then, once the optical and SAR data are brought to a common domain, an area-based ℓ2 similarity measure is used together with the COBYLA constrained maximization algorithm for registration purposes. While correlation-type functionals are usually ineffective in the application to multisensor registration, exploiting the image-to-image translation capabilities of cGAN architectures allows moving the complexity of the comparison to the domain adaptation step, thus enabling the use of a simple ℓ2 similarity measure, favoring high computational efficiency, and opening the possibility to process a large amount of data at runtime. Experiments with multispectral and panchromatic optical data combined with SAR images suggest the effectiveness of this strategy and the capability of the proposed method to achieve more accurate registration as compared to state-of-the-art approaches
