Design approaches in technology enhanced learning
Design is a critical to the successful development of any interactive learning environment (ILE). Moreover, in technology enhanced learning (TEL), the design process requires input from many diverse areas of expertise. As such, anyone undertaking tool development is required to directly address the design challenge from multiple perspectives. We provide a motivation and rationale for design approaches for learning technologies that draws upon Simon's seminal proposition of Design Science (Simon, 1969). We then review the application of Design Experiments (Brown, 1992) and Design Patterns (Alexander et al., 1977) and argue that a patterns approach has the potential to address many of the critical challenges faced by learning technologists

Interactive Knowledge Construction in the Collaborative Building of an Encyclopedia
International audienceOne of the major challenges of Applied Artificial Intelligence is to provide environments where high level human activities like learning, constructing theories or performing experiments, are enhanced by Artificial Intelligence technologies. This paper starts with the description of an ambitious project: EnCOrE2. The specific real world EnCOrE scenario, significantly representing a much wider class of potential applicative contexts, is dedicated to the building of an Encyclopedia of Organic Chemistry in the context of Virtual Communities of experts and students. Its description is followed by a brief survey of some major AI questions and propositions in relation with the problems raised by the EnCOrE project. The third part of the paper starts with some definitions of a set of “primitives” for rational actions, and then integrates them in a unified conceptual framework for the interactive construction of knowledge. To end with, we sketch out protocols aimed at guiding both the collaborative construction process and the collaborative learning process in the EnCOrE project.The current major result is the emerging conceptual model supporting interaction between human agents and AI tools integrated in Grid services within a socio-constructivist approach, consisting of cycles of deductions, inductions and abductions upon facts (the shared reality) and concepts (their subjective interpretation) submitted to negotiations, and finally converging to a socially validated consensus
Learning in a Landscape: Simulation-building as Reflexive Intervention
This article makes a dual contribution to scholarship in science and
technology studies (STS) on simulation-building. It both documents a specific
simulation-building project, and demonstrates a concrete contribution to
interdisciplinary work of STS insights. The article analyses the struggles that
arise in the course of determining what counts as theory, as model and even as
a simulation. Such debates are especially decisive when working across
disciplinary boundaries, and their resolution is an important part of the work
involved in building simulations. In particular, we show how ontological
arguments about the value of simulations tend to determine the direction of
simulation-building. This dynamic makes it difficult to maintain an interest in
the heterogeneity of simulations and a view of simulations as unfolding
scientific objects. As an outcome of our analysis of the process and
reflections about interdisciplinary work around simulations, we propose a
chart, as a tool to facilitate discussions about simulations. This chart can be
a means to create common ground among actors in a simulation-building project,
and a support for discussions that address other features of simulations
besides their ontological status. Rather than foregrounding the chart's
classificatory potential, we stress its (past and potential) role in discussing
and reflecting on simulation-building as interdisciplinary endeavor. This chart
is a concrete instance of the kinds of contributions that STS can make to
better, more reflexive practice of simulation-building.Comment: 37 page
Ontology: A Linked Data Hub for Mathematics
In this paper, we present an ontology of mathematical knowledge concepts that
covers a wide range of the fields of mathematics and introduces a balanced
representation between comprehensive and sensible models. We demonstrate the
applications of this representation in information extraction, semantic search,
and education. We argue that the ontology can be a core of future integration
of math-aware data sets in the Web of Data and, therefore, provide mappings

Semantics for incident identification and resolution reports
In order to achieve a safe and systematic treatment of security protocols, organizations release a number of technical
briefings describing how to detect and manage security incidents. A critical issue is that this document set may suffer from
semantic deficiencies, mainly due to ambiguity or different granularity levels of description and analysis. An approach to
face this problem is the use of semantic methodologies in order to provide better Knowledge Externalization from incident
protocols management. In this article, we propose a method based on semantic techniques for both, analyzing and specifying
(meta)security requirements on protocols used for solving security incidents. This would allow specialist getting better

Knowledge Representation with Ontologies: The Present and Future

artifacts to represent human knowledge and as critical components in
knowledge management, the semantic Web, business-to-business
applications, and several other application areas. Various research
communities commonly assume that ontologies are the appropriate modeling
structure for representing knowledge. However, little discussion has
occurred regarding the actual range of knowledge an ontology can

Designing for practice-based context-awareness in ubiquitous e-health environments
Existing approaches for supporting context-aware knowledge sharing in ubiquitous healthcare give little attention to practice-based structures of knowledge representation. They guide knowledge re-use at an abstract level and hardly incorporate details of actionable tasks and processes necessary for accomplishing work in a real-world context. This paper presents a context-aware model for supporting clinical knowledge sharing across organizational and geographical boundaries in ubiquitous e-health. The model draws on activity and situation awareness theories as well as the Belief-Desire Intention and Case-based Reasoning techniques in intelligent systems with the goal of enabling clinicians in disparate locations to gain a common representation of relevant situational information in each other's work contexts based on the notion of practice. We discuss the conceptual design of the model, present a formal approach for representing practice as context in a ubiquitous healthcare environment, and describe an application scenario and a prototype system to evaluate the proposed approach

Evaluating Knowledge Representation and Reasoning Capabilites of Ontology Specification Languages
The interchange of ontologies across the World Wide Web (WWW) and the cooperation among heterogeneous agents placed on it is the main reason for the development of a new set of ontology specification languages, based on new web standards such as XML or RDF. These languages (SHOE, XOL, RDF, OIL, etc) aim to represent the knowledge contained in an ontology in a simple and human-readable way, as well as allow for the interchange of ontologies across the web. In this paper, we establish a common framework to compare the expressiveness of "traditional" ontology languages (Ontolingua, OKBC, OCML, FLogic, LOOM) and "web-based" ontology languages. As a result of this study, we conclude that different needs in KR and reasoning may exist in the building of an ontology-based application, and these needs must be evaluated in order to choose the most suitable ontology language(s)
