The representation and management of evolving features in geospatial databases
Geographic features change over time, this change being the result of some
kind of event or occurrence. It has been a research challenge to represent
this data in a manner that reflects human perception. Most database systems used in geographic information systems (GIS) are relational, and change
is either captured by exhaustively storing all versions of data, or updates
replace previous versions. This stems from the inherent diffculty of modelling geographic objects in relational tables. This diffculty is compounded
when the necessary time dimension is introduced to model how those objects
evolve. There is little doubt that the object-oriented (OO) paradigm holds
signi cant advantages over the relational model when it comes to modelling
real-world entities and spatial data, and it is argued that this contention
is particularly true when it comes to spatio-temporal data. This thesis describes an object-oriented approach to the design of a conceptual model for representing spatio-temporal geographic data, called the Feature Evolution
Model (FEM), based on states and events. The model was used to implement a spatio-temporal database management system in Oracle Spatial, and
an interface prototype is described that was used to evaluate the system by
enabling querying and visualisation
A storage and access architecture for efficient query processing in spatial database systems
Due to the high complexity of objects and queries and also due to extremely
large data volumes, geographic database systems impose stringent requirements on their
storage and access architecture with respect to efficient query processing. Performance
improving concepts such as spatial storage and access structures, approximations, object
decompositions and multi-phase query processing have been suggested and analyzed as
single building blocks. In this paper, we describe a storage and access architecture which
is composed from the above building blocks in a modular fashion. Additionally, we incorporate
into our architecture a new ingredient, the scene organization, for efficiently
supporting set-oriented access of large-area region queries. An experimental performance
comparison demonstrates that the concept of scene organization leads to considerable
performance improvements for large-area region queries by a factor of up to 150
Principles and Concepts of Agent-Based Modelling for Developing Geospatial Simulations
The aim of this paper is to outline fundamental concepts and principles of the Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) paradigm, with particular reference to the development of geospatial simulations. The paper begins with a brief definition of modelling, followed by a classification of model types, and a comment regarding a shift (in certain circumstances) towards modelling systems at the individual-level. In particular, automata approaches (e.g. Cellular Automata, CA, and ABM) have been particularly popular, with ABM moving to the fore. A definition of agents and agent-based models is given; identifying their advantages and disadvantages, especially in relation to geospatial modelling. The potential use of agent-based models is discussed, and how-to instructions for developing an agent-based model are provided. Types of simulation / modelling systems available for ABM are defined, supplemented with criteria to consider before choosing a particular system for a modelling endeavour. Information pertaining to a selection of simulation / modelling systems (Swarm, MASON, Repast, StarLogo, NetLogo, OBEUS, AgentSheets and AnyLogic) is provided, categorised by their licensing policy (open source, shareware / freeware and proprietary systems). The evaluation (i.e. verification, calibration, validation and analysis) of agent-based models and their output is examined, and noteworthy applications are discussed.Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are a particularly useful medium for representing model input and output of a geospatial nature. Smart Geographic object: Toward a new understanding of GIS Technology in Ubiquitous Computing
One of the fundamental aspects of ubiquitous computing is the instrumentation
of the real world by smart devices. This instrumentation constitutes an
opportunity to rethink the interactions between human beings and their
environment on the one hand, and between the components of this environment on
the other. In this paper we discuss what this understanding of ubiquitous
computing can bring to geographic science and particularly to GIS technology.
Our main idea is the instrumentation of the geographic environment through the
instrumentation of geographic objects composing it. And then investigate how
this instrumentation can meet the current limitations of GIS technology, and
offers a new stage of rapprochement between the earth and its abstraction. As
result, the current research work proposes a new concept we named Smart
Geographic Object SGO. The latter is a convergence point between the smart
objects and geographic objects, two concepts appertaining respectively to

Remote sensing and geographically based information systems
The incorporation of remotely sensed digital data in a computer based information system is seen to be equivalent to the incorporation of any other spatially oriented layer of data. The growing interest in such systems indicates a need to develop a generalized geographically oriented data base management system that could be made commercially available for a wide range of applications. Some concepts that distinguish geographic information systems were reviewed, and a simple model which can serve as a conceptual framework for the design of a generalized geographic information system was examined
Query processing of spatial objects: Complexity versus Redundancy
The management of complex spatial objects in applications, such as geography and cartography,
imposes stringent new requirements on spatial database systems, in particular on efficient
query processing. As shown before, the performance of spatial query processing can be improved
by decomposing complex spatial objects into simple components. Up to now, only decomposition
techniques generating a linear number of very simple components, e.g. triangles or trapezoids, have
been considered. In this paper, we will investigate the natural trade-off between the complexity of
the components and the redundancy, i.e. the number of components, with respect to its effect on
efficient query processing. In particular, we present two new decomposition methods generating
a better balance between the complexity and the number of components than previously known
techniques. We compare these new decomposition methods to the traditional undecomposed representation
as well as to the well-known decomposition into convex polygons with respect to their
performance in spatial query processing. This comparison points out that for a wide range of query
selectivity the new decomposition techniques clearly outperform both the undecomposed representation
and the convex decomposition method. More important than the absolute gain in performance
by a factor of up to an order of magnitude is the robust performance of our new decomposition
techniques over the whole range of query selectivity

There are indications that the current generation of simulation models in practical,
operational uses has reached the limits of its usefulness under existing specifications.
The relative stasis in operational urban modeling contrasts with simulation efforts in
other disciplines, where techniques, theories, and ideas drawn from computation and
complexity studies are revitalizing the ways in which we conceptualize, understand,
and model real-world phenomena. Many of these concepts and methodologies are
applicable to operational urban systems simulation. Indeed, in many cases, ideas from
computation and complexity studies—often clustered under the collective term of
geocomputation, as they apply to geography—are ideally suited to the simulation of
urban dynamics. However, there exist several obstructions to their successful use in
operational urban geographic simulation, particularly as regards the capacity of these
methodologies to handle top-down dynamics in urban systems.
This paper presents a framework for developing a hybrid model for urban geographic
simulation and discusses some of the imposing barriers against innovation in this
field. The framework infuses approaches derived from geocomputation and
complexity with standard techniques that have been tried and tested in operational
land-use and transport simulation. Macro-scale dynamics that operate from the topdown
are handled by traditional land-use and transport models, while micro-scale
dynamics that work from the bottom-up are delegated to agent-based models and
cellular automata. The two methodologies are fused in a modular fashion using a
system of feedback mechanisms. As a proof-of-concept exercise, a micro-model of
residential location has been developed with a view to hybridization. The model
mixes cellular automata and multi-agent approaches and is formulated so as to
interface with meso-models at a higher scale
