    Applications of neural networks to control systems

The following properties of neural networks are identified as of major interest to this field: their ability to implement nonlinear mappings, their massively parallel structure and their capacity to adapt. Exploiting the first feature, a new method is proposed for PID autotuning. Based on integral measures of the open or closed loop step response, multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) are used to supply PID parameter values to a standard PID controller. Before being used on-line, the MLPs are trained offline, to provide PID parameter values based on integral performance criteria. Off-line simulations, where a plant with time-varying parameters and time varying transfer function is considered, show that well damped responses are obtained. The neural PID autotuner is subsequently implemented in real-time. Extensive experimentation confirms the good results obtained in the off-line simulations. To reduce the training time incurred when using the error back-propagation algorithm, three possibilities are investigated. A comparative study of higherorder methods of optimization identifies the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM)algorithm as the best method. When used for function approximation purposes, the neurons in the output layer of the MLPs have a linear activation function. Exploiting this linearity, the standard training criterion can be replaced by a new, yet equivalent, criterion. Using the LM algorithm to minimize this new criterion, together with an alternative form of Jacobian matrix, a new learning algorithm is obtained. This algorithm is subsequently parallelized. Its main blocks of computation are identified, separately parallelized, and finally connected together. The training time of MLPs is reduced by a factor greater than 70 executing the new learning algorithm on 7 Inmos transputers

    A COLLISION AVOIDANCE SYSTEM FOR AUTONOMOUS UNDERWATER VEHICLES

    The work in this thesis is concerned with the development of a novel and practical collision avoidance system for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Synergistically, advanced stochastic motion planning methods, dynamics quantisation approaches, multivariable tracking controller designs, sonar data processing and workspace representation, are combined to enhance significantly the survivability of modern AUVs. The recent proliferation of autonomous AUV deployments for various missions such as seafloor surveying, scientific data gathering and mine hunting has demanded a substantial increase in vehicle autonomy. One matching requirement of such missions is to allow all the AUV to navigate safely in a dynamic and unstructured environment. Therefore, it is vital that a robust and effective collision avoidance system should be forthcoming in order to preserve the structural integrity of the vehicle whilst simultaneously increasing its autonomy. This thesis not only provides a holistic framework but also an arsenal of computational techniques in the design of a collision avoidance system for AUVs. The design of an obstacle avoidance system is first addressed. The core paradigm is the application of the Rapidly-exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithm and the newly developed version for use as a motion planning tool. Later, this technique is merged with the Manoeuvre Automaton (MA) representation to address the inherent disadvantages of the RRT. A novel multi-node version which can also address time varying final state is suggested. Clearly, the reference trajectory generated by the aforementioned embedded planner must be tracked. Hence, the feasibility of employing the linear quadratic regulator (LQG) and the nonlinear kinematic based state-dependent Ricatti equation (SDRE) controller as trajectory trackers are explored. The obstacle detection module, which comprises of sonar processing and workspace representation submodules, is developed and tested on actual sonar data acquired in a sea-trial via a prototype forward looking sonar (AT500). The sonar processing techniques applied are fundamentally derived from the image processing perspective. Likewise, a novel occupancy grid using nonlinear function is proposed for the workspace representation of the AUV. Results are presented that demonstrate the ability of an AUV to navigate a complex environment. To the author's knowledge, it is the first time the above newly developed methodologies have been applied to an A UV collision avoidance system, and, therefore, it is considered that the work constitutes a contribution of knowledge in this area of work.J&S MARINE LT

    Fuzzy PD control of an optically guided long reach robot

    This thesis describes the investigation and development of a fuzzy controller for a manipulator with a single flexible link. The novelty of this research is due to the fact that the controller devised is suitable for flexible link manipulators with a round cross section. Previous research has concentrated on control of flexible slender structures that are relatively easier to model as the vibration effects of torsion can be ignored. Further novelty arises due to the fact that this is the first instance of the application of fuzzy control in the optical Tip Feedback Sensor (TFS) based configuration. A design methodology has been investigated to develop a fuzzy controller suitable for application in a safety critical environment such as the nuclear industry. This methodology provides justification for all the parameters of the fuzzy controller including membership fUllctions, inference and defuzzification techniques and the operators used in the algorithm. Using the novel modified phase plane method investigated in this thesis, it is shown that the derivation of complete, consistent and non-interactive rules can be achieved. This methodology was successfully applied to the derivation of fuzzy rules even when the arm was subjected to different payloads. The design approach, that targeted real-time embedded control applicat.ions from the outset, results in a controller implementation that is suitable for cheaper CPU constrained and memory challenged embedded processors. The controller comprises of a fuzzy supervisor that is used to alter the derivative term of a linear classical Proportional + Derivative (PD) controller. The derivative term is updated in relation to the measured tip error and its derivative obtained through the TFS based configuration. It is shown that by adding 'intelligence' to the control loop in this way, the performance envelope of the classical controller can be enhanced. A 128% increase in payload, 73.5% faster settling time and a reduction of steady state of over 50% is achieved using fuzzy control over its classical counterpart

    FEEDFORWARD ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORK DESIGN UTILISING SUBTHRESHOLD MODE CMOS DEVICES

    This thesis reviews various previously reported techniques for simulating artificial neural networks and investigates the design of fully-connected feedforward networks based on MOS transistors operating in the subthreshold mode of conduction as they are suitable for performing compact, low power, implantable pattern recognition systems. The principal objective is to demonstrate that the transfer characteristic of the devices can be fully exploited to design basic processing modules which overcome the linearity range, weight resolution, processing speed, noise and mismatch of components problems associated with weak inversion conduction, and so be used to implement networks which can be trained to perform practical tasks. A new four-quadrant analogue multiplier, one of the most important cells in the design of artificial neural networks, is developed. Analytical as well as simulation results suggest that the new scheme can efficiently be used to emulate both the synaptic and thresholding functions. To complement this thresholding-synapse, a novel current-to-voltage converter is also introduced. The characteristics of the well known sample-and-hold circuit as a weight memory scheme are analytically derived and simulation results suggest that a dummy compensated technique is required to obtain the required minimum of 8 bits weight resolution. Performance of the combined load and thresholding-synapse arrangement as well as an on-chip update/refresh mechanism are analytically evaluated and simulation studies on the Exclusive OR network as a benchmark problem are provided and indicate a useful level of functionality. Experimental results on the Exclusive OR network and a 'QRS' complex detector based on a 10:6:3 multilayer perceptron are also presented and demonstrate the potential of the proposed design techniques in emulating feedforward neural networks

    A steady state tip control strategy for long reach robots

    The work presented in this thesis describes the development of a novel strategy for the steady state tip position control of a single link flexible robot arm. Control is based upon a master/slave relationship. Arm trajectory is defined by through 'master' positioning head which moves a laser through a programmed path. Tip position is detected by an optical system which produces an error signal proportional to the displacement of the tip from the demand laser spot position. The error signal and its derivative form inputs to the arm 'slave' controller so enabling direct tip control with simultaneous correction for arm bending. Trajectory definition is not model-based as it is defined optically through movement of the positioning head alone. A critical investigation of vacuum tube and solid state sensing methods is undertaken leading to the development of a photodiode quadrant detector beam tracking system. The effect of varying the incident light parameters on the beam tracker performance are examined from which the optimum illumination characteristics are determined. Operational testing of the system on a dual-axis prototype robot using the purpose-built beam tracker has shown that successful steady state tip control can be achieved through a PD based slave controller. Errors of less than 0.05 mm and settling times of 0.2 s are obtained. These results compare favourably with those for the model-based tip position correction strategies where tracking errors of ± 0.6 mm are recorded
