Grid-based semantic integration of heterogeneous data resources: Implementation on a HealthGrid
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University. The semantic integration of geographically distributed and heterogeneous data
resources still remains a key challenge in Grid infrastructures. Today's
mainstream Grid technologies hold the promise to meet this challenge in a
systematic manner, making data applications more scalable and manageable. The
thesis conducts a thorough investigation of the problem, the state of the art, and
the related technologies, and proposes an Architecture for Semantic Integration of
Data Sources (ASIDS) addressing the semantic heterogeneity issue. It defines a
simple mechanism for the interoperability of heterogeneous data sources in order
to extract or discover information regardless of their different semantics. The
constituent technologies of this architecture include Globus Toolkit (GT4) and
OGSA-DAI (Open Grid Service Architecture Data Integration and Access)
alongside other web services technologies such as XML (Extensive Markup
Language). To show this, the ASIDS architecture was implemented and tested in a
realistic setting by building an exemplar application prototype on a HealthGrid
(pilot implementation).
The study followed an empirical research methodology and was informed by
extensive literature surveys and a critical analysis of the relevant technologies and
their synergies. The two literature reviews, together with the analysis of the
technology background, have provided a good overview of the current Grid and
HealthGrid landscape, produced some valuable taxonomies, explored new paths
by integrating technologies, and more importantly illuminated the problem and
guided the research process towards a promising solution. Yet the primary
contribution of this research is an approach that uses contemporary Grid
technologies for integrating heterogeneous data resources that have semantically
different. data fields (attributes). It has been practically demonstrated (using a
prototype HealthGrid) that discovery in semantically integrated distributed data
sources can be feasible by using mainstream Grid technologies, which have been
shown to have some Significant advantages over non-Grid based approaches
Potential markets for advanced satellite communications
This report identifies trends in the volume and type of traffic offered to the U.S. domestic communications infrastructure and extrapolates these trends through the year 2011. To describe how telecommunications service providers are adapting to the identified trends, this report assesses the status, plans, and capacity of the domestic communications infrastructure. Cable, satellite, and radio components of the infrastructure are examined separately. The report also assesses the following major applications making use of the infrastructure: (1) Broadband services, including Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (BISDN), Switched Multimegabit Data Service (SMDS), and frame relay; (2) mobile services, including voice, location, and paging; (3) Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSAT), including mesh VSAT; and (4) Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) for audio and video. The report associates satellite implementation of specific applications with market segments appropriate to their features and capabilities. The volume and dollar value of these market segments are estimated. For the satellite applications able to address the needs of significant market segments, the report also examines the potential of each satellite-based application to capture business from alternative technologies
Literature Review on Employability, Inclusion and ICT, Report 2: ICT and Employability
IPTS has launched a research project on how ICT can support employability, in the context of its policy support activities for the implementation of the Europe 2020 strategy, and the Digital Agenda for Europe. As a first step, JRC-IPTS contracted the Institute of Employment Research, University of Warwick, UK to prepare: a) a review of the literature on employability, its dimensions and the factors which affect it in general and for groups at risk of exclusion, namely migrants, youth and older workers; and b) a report on how ICT contribute to employability, support the reduction of barriers and create pathways to employment for all and also for the three specific groups at risk of exclusion. This report presents the findings of the second part of the research.JRC.J.3-Information Societ
Advances in Grid Computing
This book approaches the grid computing with a perspective on the latest achievements in the field, providing an insight into the current research trends and advances, and presenting a large range of innovative research papers. The topics covered in this book include resource and data management, grid architectures and development, and grid-enabled applications. New ideas employing heuristic methods from swarm intelligence or genetic algorithm and quantum encryption are considered in order to explain two main aspects of grid computing: resource management and data management. The book addresses also some aspects of grid computing that regard architecture and development, and includes a diverse range of applications for grid computing, including possible human grid computing system, simulation of the fusion reaction, ubiquitous healthcare service provisioning and complex water systems
Building the Future Internet through FIRE
The Internet as we know it today is the result of a continuous activity for improving network communications, end user services, computational processes and also information technology infrastructures. The Internet has become a critical infrastructure for the human-being by offering complex networking services and end-user applications that all together have transformed all aspects, mainly economical, of our lives. Recently, with the advent of new paradigms and the progress in wireless technology, sensor networks and information systems and also the inexorable shift towards everything connected paradigm, first as known as the Internet of Things and lately envisioning into the Internet of Everything, a data-driven society has been created. In a data-driven society, productivity, knowledge, and experience are dependent on increasingly open, dynamic, interdependent and complex Internet services. The challenge for the Internet of the Future design is to build robust enabling technologies, implement and deploy adaptive systems, to create business opportunities considering increasing uncertainties and emergent systemic behaviors where humans and machines seamlessly cooperate
Long-distance rail in Europe: Comparing the forms of head-on competition across Europe
Europe is finally entering a season of liberalisation in the long-distance rail passenger market, which takes the form of on-track competition among public and private operators. The paper provides a broad-scope comparison of relevant European markets, belonging to liberalised and non-liberalised countries, aiming to point out the patterns in terms of supply, competition model and prices. The paper is based on a sample of heterogeneous 69 city-pairs, analysed in two fourteen days periods in 2019 (May/June and November). All available modes are observed, collecting info on companies, frequency of services, and cheapest price. The analysis starts from a schematisation of different business models, based on literature. Then, using the database, we study the country's supply structure, size, and level of intermodal and intra-modal competition through HHIs. Prices are analysed in two steps: the average prices and the price dispersion, searching for their main determinants, including but not limited to competition. Results show that a higher competition level is not always corresponding to low prices, which are instead determined by many other factors such as size of market, demand, socio-economic characteristics, subsidies, production costs, speed advantage, strength of the incumbent, etc. The competition level, instead, directly influences the quality, the supplied capacity, and the price dispersion
