Although planning and scheduling optimization have been explored in the literature for many years now, it still remains a hot topic in the current scientific research. The changing market trends, globalization, technical and technological progress, and sustainability considerations make it necessary to deal with new optimization challenges in modern manufacturing, engineering, and healthcare systems. This book provides an overview of the recent advances in different areas connected with operations research models and other applications of intelligent computing techniques used for planning and scheduling optimization. The wide range of theoretical and practical research findings reported in this book confirms that the planning and scheduling problem is a complex issue that is present in different industrial sectors and organizations and opens promising and dynamic perspectives of research and development

A simulation approach to warehousing policies: the grandvision case

This master thesis is a project which took place in the company GrandVision. It is under the Supply Chain field of study, more precisely Warehousing; which despite having its importance underrated for many times, represents on average from one quarter to one fifth of the overall logistic costs. Regardless of the great technology break-troughs, traditional manual picker-to-part warehousing systems still represent 80% of the universe. Taking advantage of GrandVision’s management will in develop improvement projects to its warehouse; it was proposed the study, through simulation, of new Storage and Picking policies for the weekly Replenishment operation of MultiOpticas and GrandOptical Shops. The simulation models were created based on previous findings in this area of study, and results obtained are according with the ones previously reported in literature. With the conclusion of this master thesis, GrandVision’s management has in its possess a procedure of Class-Based Storage, which combined with a Batching Policy can bring, according with the simulation model, improvements around 32% of the Total Fulfillment Time

Map online system using internet-based image catalogue

Digital maps carry along its geodata information such as coordinate that is important in one particular topographic and thematic map. These geodatas are meaningful especially in military field. Since the maps carry along this information, its makes the size of the images is too big. The bigger size, the bigger storage is required to allocate the image file. It also can cause longer loading time. These conditions make it did not suitable to be applied in image catalogue approach via internet environment. With compression techniques, the image size can be reduced and the quality of the image is still guaranteed without much changes. This report is paying attention to one of the image compression technique using wavelet technology. Wavelet technology is much batter than any other image compression technique nowadays. As a result, the compressed images applied to a system called Map Online that used Internet-based Image Catalogue approach. This system allowed user to buy map online. User also can download the maps that had been bought besides using the searching the map. Map searching is based on several meaningful keywords. As a result, this system is expected to be used by Jabatan Ukur dan Pemetaan Malaysia (JUPEM) in order to make the organization vision is implemented

Identifying problems in the warehouse process, case China

    Get PDF
The aim of the thesis is to identify and improve problems in the warehouse process in the case company, which is located in China. Improving the process is based on a warehouse design framework. The framework’s purpose is to guide the company to improve overall performance in the warehouse process. The research problem is based on company’s interest and the actual study is accomplished in Shanghai, China during autumn 2011. The study was conducted by normative case-study method. The study is composed of theoretical literature survey and empirical part. The theoretical part presents the process of warehouse management and introduces warehousing design framework. In addition the study includes relevant theory of Chinese culture aspect in process improvement project. The empirical part concentrates on stages of process development. Current stage of the process is analyzed by interviews and data from the company’s information system. Actual process improvement is conducted with help of benchmarking and design frameworks. The result of the study is the designed framework and new warehouse process. Design framework includes receiving process design, warehouse sizing design, warehouse layout design and staffing process design. Financial impact of the results is remarkable, but fastest savings are gained by warehouse layout design. With the help of new layout, utilization of fill rate is improved and it is authenticated that expansion of the warehouse facilities is not relevant. In addition, results include analysis of Chinese culture impact on warehouse improvement process. Main findings in this area consist of guanzi aspect.fi=Opinnäytetyö kokotekstinä PDF-muodossa.|en=Thesis fulltext in PDF format.|sv=Lärdomsprov tillgängligt som fulltext i PDF-format

Order batching and picking optimization in terms of supply chain management (SCM)

    Get PDF
In distribution center (DC), at the time of forming a batch, by considering the order holding time and picking time in the system, an algorithm based on the first-come, first served based (FCFS) rule is presented. In the proposed algorithm, both order picking factor and order holding factor are used in order to reflect the throughput of the system and response of orders.;Furthermore, some simple batching policies for considering the order holding time in the system are presented. They may result in meeting its customers\u27 requirements for larger numbers of smaller orders and rapid turnaround. They reflect the well-known supply chain management (SCM) concept by taking the customer\u27s need into consideration. Their performance measure of order response time that consists of order picking time and order holding time is evaluated and compared.;Finally, this thesis also develops a new optimization-based joint order batching and picking framework for warehousing and distribution systems. The nested partitions (NP) method that integrates global sampling of the feasible region and local search heuristic is applied to this problem. To speed up the computation, the improved NP-algorithm is developed. Also, by taking the special structure of the problem in account, an improved NP method in terms of small computational time is developed

The potential benefit of improving the dissemination of agricultural weather information to the Mississippi cotton farmer

    Get PDF
The author has identified the following significant results. The potential benefit of improved dissemination of weather information to the Mississippi cotton farmer was estimated at $36,000 per 1000 acres. This is 16% of production cost of cotton in 1976. On a statewide basis, the total potential savings exceeds 100 million dollars
