    Microprocessor based signal processing techniques for system identification and adaptive control of DC-DC converters

    PhD ThesisMany industrial and consumer devices rely on switch mode power converters (SMPCs) to provide a reliable, well regulated, DC power supply. A poorly performing power supply can potentially compromise the characteristic behaviour, efficiency, and operating range of the device. To ensure accurate regulation of the SMPC, optimal control of the power converter output is required. However, SMPC uncertainties such as component variations and load changes will affect the performance of the controller. To compensate for these time varying problems, there is increasing interest in employing real-time adaptive control techniques in SMPC applications. It is important to note that many adaptive controllers constantly tune and adjust their parameters based upon on-line system identification. In the area of system identification and adaptive control, Recursive Least Square (RLS) method provide promising results in terms of fast convergence rate, small prediction error, accurate parametric estimation, and simple adaptive structure. Despite being popular, RLS methods often have limited application in low cost systems, such as SMPCs, due to the computationally heavy calculations demanding significant hardware resources which, in turn, may require a high specification microprocessor to successfully implement. For this reason, this thesis presents research into lower complexity adaptive signal processing and filtering techniques for on-line system identification and control of SMPCs systems. The thesis presents the novel application of a Dichotomous Coordinate Descent (DCD) algorithm for the system identification of a dc-dc buck converter. Two unique applications of the DCD algorithm are proposed; system identification and self-compensation of a dc-dc SMPC. Firstly, specific attention is given to the parameter estimation of dc-dc buck SMPC. It is computationally efficient, and uses an infinite impulse response (IIR) adaptive filter as a plant model. Importantly, the proposed method is able to identify the parameters quickly and accurately; thus offering an efficient hardware solution which is well suited to real-time applications. Secondly, new alternative adaptive schemes that do not depend entirely on estimating the plant parameters is embedded with DCD algorithm. The proposed technique is based on a simple adaptive filter method and uses a one-tap finite impulse response (FIR) prediction error filter (PEF). Experimental and simulation results clearly show the DCD technique can be optimised to achieve comparable performance to classic RLS algorithms.     REAL-TIME ADAPTIVE PULSE COMPRESSION ON RECONFIGURABLE, SYSTEM-ON-CHIP (SOC) PLATFORMS

    New radar applications need to perform complex algorithms and process a large quantity of data to generate useful information for the users. This situation has motivated the search for better processing solutions that include low-power high-performance processors, efficient algorithms, and high-speed interfaces. In this work, hardware implementation of adaptive pulse compression algorithms for real-time transceiver optimization is presented, and is based on a System-on-Chip architecture for reconfigurable hardware devices. This study also evaluates the performance of dedicated coprocessors as hardware accelerator units to speed up and improve the computation of computing-intensive tasks such matrix multiplication and matrix inversion, which are essential units to solve the covariance matrix. The tradeoffs between latency and hardware utilization are also presented. Moreover, the system architecture takes advantage of the embedded processor, which is interconnected with the logic resources through high-performance buses, to perform floating-point operations, control the processing blocks, and communicate with an external PC through a customized software interface. The overall system functionality is demonstrated and tested for real-time operations using a Ku-band testbed together with a low-cost channel emulator for different types of waveforms

    Low-complexity DCD-based sparse recovery algorithms

    Sparse recovery techniques find applications in many areas. Real-time implementation of such techniques has been recently an important area for research. In this paper, we propose computationally efficient techniques based on dichotomous coordinate descent (DCD) iterations for recovery of sparse complex-valued signals. We first consider 21\ell_2 \ell_1 optimization that can incorporate \emph{a priori} information on the solution in the form of a weight vector. We propose a DCD-based algorithm for 21\ell_2 \ell_1 optimization with a fixed 1\ell_1-regularization, and then efficiently incorporate it in reweighting iterations using a \emph{warm start} at each iteration. We then exploit homotopy by sampling the regularization parameter and arrive at an algorithm that, in each homotopy iteration, performs the 21\ell_2 \ell_1 optimization on the current support with a fixed regularization parameter and then updates the support by adding/removing elements. We propose efficient rules for adding and removing the elements. The performance of the homotopy algorithm is further improved with the reweighting. We then propose an algorithm for 20\ell_2 \ell_0 optimization that exploits homotopy for the 0\ell_0 regularization; it alternates between the least-squares (LS) optimization on the support and the support update, for which we also propose an efficient rule. The algorithm complexity is reduced when DCD iterations with a \emph{warm start} are used for the LS optimization, and, as most of the DCD operations are additions and bit-shifts, it is especially suited to real time implementation. The proposed algorithms are investigated in channel estimation scenarios and compared with known sparse recovery techniques such as the matching pursuit (MP) and YALL1 algorithms. The numerical examples show that the proposed techniques achieve a mean-squared error smaller than that of the YALL1 algorithm and complexity comparable to that of the MP algorithm

    Digital Pre-distortion for Interference Reduction in Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks

    Given the ever increasing reliance of today’s society on ubiquitous wireless access, the paradigm of dynamic spectrum access (DSA) as been proposed and implemented for utilizing the limited wireless spectrum more efficiently. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is growing in popularity for adoption into wireless services employing DSA frame- work, due to its high bandwidth efficiency and resiliency to multipath fading. While these advantages have been proven for many wireless applications, including LTE-Advanced and numerous IEEE wireless standards, one potential drawback of OFDM or its non-contiguous variant, NC-OFDM, is that it exhibits high peak-to-average power ratios (PAPR), which can induce in-band and out-of-band (OOB) distortions when the peaks of the waveform enter the compression region of the transmitter power amplifier (PA). Such OOB emissions can interfere with existing neighboring transmissions, and thereby severely deteriorate the reliability of the DSA network. A performance-enhancing digital pre-distortion (DPD) technique compensating for PA and in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) modulator distortions is proposed in this dissertation. Al- though substantial research efforts into designing DPD schemes have already been presented in the open literature, there still exists numerous opportunities to further improve upon the performance of OOB suppression for NC-OFDM transmission in the presence of RF front-end impairments. A set of orthogonal polynomial basis functions is proposed in this dissertation together with a simplified joint DPD structure. A performance analysis is presented to show that the OOB emissions is reduced to approximately 50 dBc with proposed algorithms employed during NC-OFDM transmission. Furthermore, a novel and intuitive DPD solution that can minimize the power regrowth at any pre-specified frequency in the spurious domain is proposed in this dissertation. Conventional DPD methods have been proven to be able to effectively reduce the OOB emissions that fall on top of adjacent channels. However more spectral emissions in more distant frequency ranges are generated by employing such DPD solutions, which are potentially in violation of the spurious emission limit. At the same time, the emissions in adjacent channel must be kept under the OOB limit. To the best of the author’s knowledge, there has not been extensive research conducted on this topic. Mathematical derivation procedures of the proposed algorithm are provided for both memoryless nonlinear model and memory-based nonlinear model. Simulation results show that the proposed method is able to provide a good balance of OOB emissions and emissions in the far out spurious domain, by reducing the spurious emissions by 4-5 dB while maintaining the adjacent channel leakage ratio (ACLR) improvement by at least 10 dB, comparing to the PA output spectrum without any DPD

    Development of new parameter extraction schemes and maximum power point controllers for photovoltaic power systems

    In the recent years, in every parts of the world, focus is on supplementing the conventional fossil fuel based power generation with power generated from renewable sources such as photovoltaic (PV) and wind systems. PV technology is one of the fastest growing energy technologies in the world owing to its abundant availability. But unfortunately, the cost of PV energy is higher than that of other electrical energy from other conventional sources.Therefore, a great deal of research opportunities lie in applying power electronics and control technologies for harvesting PV power at higher efficiencies and efficient utilization. Simulation and control studies of a PV system require an accurate PV panel model. Further, for efficient utilization of the available PV energy, a PV system should operate at its maximum power point (MPP). A maximum power point tracker (MPPT) is needed in the PV system to enable it to operate at the MPP.The output characteristic of a PV system is non-linear and its output power fluctuates to a large extent in accordance with the variation of solar irradiance and temperature. A lot of research is being pursued on this area and several MPPT techniques have been proposed and implemented. But, still there is a lot of scope on designing new parameter extraction algorithms to achieve fast and accurate extraction of PV panel parameters. Further, there is need of development of efficient MPPT algorithms that can be adapted to different weather conditions with minimal fluctuations in input PV current and voltage.The work described in the thesis involves development of some new parameter extraction and robust adaptive MPPT algorithms. Two parameter extraction algorithms have been proposed namely a hybrid Newton Raphson method (hybrid NRM) and an evolutionary computational technique called Bacterial Foraging Optimization (BFO). These two parameter extraction techniques are found to be extracting parameters of a PV panel accurately in all weather conditions with less computational overhead. Further, these two parameter extraction techniques do not suffer from singularity problem during convergence.     Self-Aligning Finger Exoskeleton for the Mobilization of the Metacarpophalangeal Joint

    In the context of hand and finger rehabilitation, kinematic compatibility is key for the acceptability and clinical exploitation of robotic devices. Different kinematic chain solutions have been proposed in the state of the art, with different trade-offs between characteristics of kinematic compatibility, adaptability to different anthropometries, and the ability to compute relevant clinical information. This study presents the design of a novel kinematic chain for the mobilization of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint of the long fingers and a mathematical model for the real-time computation of the joint angle and transferred torque. The proposed mechanism can self-align with the human joint without hindering force transfer or inducing parasitic torque. The chain has been designed for integration into an exoskeletal device aimed at rehabilitating traumatic-hand patients. The exoskeleton actuation the unit has a series-elastic architecture for compliant human-robot interaction and has been assembled and preliminarily tested in experiments with eight human subjects. Performance has been investigated in terms of (i) the accuracy of the MCP joint angle estimation through comparison with a video-based motion tracking system, (ii) residual MCP torque when the exoskeleton is controlled to provide null output impedance and (iii) torque-tracking performance. Results showed a root-mean-square error (RMSE) below 5 degrees in the estimated MCP angle. The estimated residual MCP torque resulted below 7 mNm. Torque tracking performance shows an RMSE lower than 8 mNm in following sinusoidal reference profiles. The results encourage further investigations of the device in a clinical scenario

    Efficient channel equalization algorithms for multicarrier communication systems

    Blind adaptive algorithm that updates time-domain equalizer (TEQ) coefficients by Adjacent Lag Auto-correlation Minimization (ALAM) is proposed to shorten the channel for multicarrier modulation (MCM) systems. ALAM is an addition to the family of several existing correlation based algorithms that can achieve similar or better performance to existing algorithms with lower complexity. This is achieved by designing a cost function without the sum-square and utilizing symmetrical-TEQ property to reduce the complexity of adaptation of TEQ to half of the existing one. Furthermore, to avoid the limitations of lower unstable bit rate and high complexity, an adaptive TEQ using equal-taps constraints (ETC) is introduced to maximize the bit rate with the lowest complexity. An IP core is developed for the low-complexity ALAM (LALAM) algorithm to be implemented on an FPGA. This implementation is extended to include the implementation of the moving average (MA) estimate for the ALAM algorithm referred as ALAM-MA. Unit-tap constraint (UTC) is used instead of unit-norm constraint (UNC) while updating the adaptive algorithm to avoid all zero solution for the TEQ taps. The IP core is implemented on Xilinx Vertix II Pro XC2VP7-FF672-5 for ADSL receivers and the gate level simulation guaranteed successful operation at a maximum frequency of 27 MHz and 38 MHz for ALAM-MA and LALAM algorithm, respectively. FEQ equalizer is used, after channel shortening using TEQ, to recover distorted QAM signals due to channel effects. A new analytical learning based framework is proposed to jointly solve equalization and symbol detection problems in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with QAM signals. The framework utilizes extreme learning machine (ELM) to achieve fast training, high performance, and low error rates. The proposed framework performs in real-domain by transforming a complex signal into a single 2–tuple real-valued vector. Such transformation offers equalization in real domain with minimum computational load and high accuracy. Simulation results show that the proposed framework outperforms other learning based equalizers in terms of symbol error rates and training speeds

    GPU Implementation of DPSO-RE Algorithm for Parameters Identification of Surface PMSM Considering VSI Nonlinearity

    In this paper, an accurate parameter estimation model of surface permanent magnet synchronous machines (SPMSMs) is established by taking into account voltage-source-inverter (VSI) nonlinearity. A fast dynamic particle swarm optimization (DPSO) algorithm combined with a receptor editing (RE) strategy is proposed to explore the optimal values of parameter estimations. This combination provides an accelerated implementation on graphics processing unit (GPU), and the proposed method is, therefore, referred to as G-DPSORE. In G-DPSO-RE, a dynamic labor division strategy is incorporated into the swarms according to the designed evolutionary factor during the evolution process. Two novel modifications of the movement equation are designed to update the velocity of particles. Moreover, a chaotic-logistic-based immune RE operator is developed to facilitate the global best individual (gBest particle) to explore a potentially better region. Furthermore, a GPU parallel acceleration technique is utilized to speed up parameter estimation procedure. It has been demonstrated that the proposed method is effective for simultaneous estimation of the PMSM parameters and the disturbance voltage (Vdead) due to VSI nonlinearity from experimental data for currents and rotor speed measured with inexpensive equipment.
