An Evolutionary Approach to Active Robust Multiobjective Optimisation
An Active Robust Optimisation Problem (AROP) aims at finding robust adaptable solutions, i.e. solutions that actively gain robustness to environmental changes through adaptation. Existing AROP studies have considered only a single performance objective. This study extends the Active Robust Optimisation methodology to deal with problems with more than one objective. Once multiple objectives are considered, the optimal performance for every uncertain parameter setting is a set of configurations, offering different trade-offs between the objectives. To evaluate and compare solutions to this type of problems, we suggest a robustness indicator that uses a scalarising function combining the main aims of multi-objective optimisation: proximity, diversity and pertinence. The Active Robust Multi-objective Optimisation Problem is formulated in this study, and an evolutionary algorithm that uses the hypervolume measure as a scalarasing function is suggested in order to solve it. Proof-of-concept results are demonstrated using a simplified gearbox optimisation problem for an uncertain load demand
On-line multiobjective automatic control system generation by evolutionary algorithms
Evolutionary algorithms are applied to the on- line generation of servo-motor control systems. In this paper, the evolving population of controllers is evaluated at run-time via hardware in the loop, rather than on a simulated model. Disturbances are also introduced at run-time in order to pro- duce robust performance. Multiobjective optimisation of both PI and Fuzzy Logic controllers is considered. Finally an on-line implementation of Genetic Programming is presented based around the Simulink standard blockset. The on-line designed controllers are shown to be robust to both system noise and ex- ternal disturbances while still demonstrating excellent steady- state and dvnamic characteristics
Robust Mission Design Through Evidence Theory and Multi-Agent Collaborative Search
In this paper, the preliminary design of a space mission is approached
introducing uncertainties on the design parameters and formulating the
resulting reliable design problem as a multiobjective optimization problem.
Uncertainties are modelled through evidence theory and the belief, or
credibility, in the successful achievement of mission goals is maximised along
with the reliability of constraint satisfaction. The multiobjective
optimisation problem is solved through a novel algorithm based on the
collaboration of a population of agents in search for the set of highly
reliable solutions. Two typical problems in mission analysis are used to
illustrate the proposed methodology
Active transonic aerofoil design optimization using robust multiobjective evolutionary algorithms
The use of adaptive wing/aerofoil designs is being considered, as they are promising techniques in aeronautic/ aerospace since they can reduce aircraft emissions and improve aerodynamic performance of manned or unmanned aircraft. This paper investigates the robust design and optimization for one type of adaptive techniques: active flow control bump at transonic flow conditions on a natural laminar flow aerofoil. The concept of using shock control bump is to control supersonic flow on the suction/pressure side of natural laminar flow aerofoil that leads to delaying shock occurrence (weakening its strength) or boundary layer separation. Such an active flow control technique reduces total drag at transonic speeds due to reduction of wave drag. The location of boundary-layer transition can influence the position and structure of the supersonic shock on the suction/pressure side of aerofoil. The boundarylayer transition position is considered as an uncertainty design parameter in aerodynamic design due to the many factors, such as surface contamination or surface erosion. This paper studies the shock-control-bump shape design optimization using robust evolutionary algorithms with uncertainty in boundary-layer transition locations. The optimization method is based on a canonical evolution strategy and incorporates the concepts of hierarchical topology, parallel computing, and asynchronous evaluation. Two test cases are conducted: the first test assumes the boundary-layer transition position is at 45% of chord from the leading edge, and the second test considers robust design optimization for the shock control bump at the variability of boundary-layer transition positions. The numerical result shows that the optimization method coupled to uncertainty design techniques produces Pareto optimal shock-control-bump shapes, which have low sensitivity and high aerodynamic performance while having significant total drag reduction
Multiobjective analysis for the design and control of an electromagnetic valve actuator
The electromagnetic valve actuator can deliver much improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions in spark ignition (SI) engines owing to the potential for variable valve timing when compared with cam-operated, or conventional, variable valve strategies. The possibility exists to reduce pumping losses by throttle-free operation, along with closed-valve engine braking. However, further development is required to make the technology suitable for accept- ance into the mass production market. This paper investigates the application of multiobjective optimization techniques to the conflicting objective functions inherent in the operation of such a device. The techniques are utilized to derive the optimal force–displacement characteristic for the solenoid actuator, along with its controllability and dynamic/steady state performance
A Computational Comparison of Evolutionary Algorithms for Water Resource Planning for Agricultural and Environmental Purposes
The use of water resources for agricultural purposes, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions, is a matter of increasing concern across the world. Optimisation techniques can play an important role in improving the allocation of land to different crops, based on a utility function (such as net revenue) and the water resources needed to support these. Recent work proposed a model formulation for an agricultural region in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area of the Murray-Darling River basin in Australia, and found that the well-known NSGA-II technique could produce sensible crop mixes while preserving ground and surface water for environmental purposes. In the present study we apply Differential Evolution using two different solution representations, one of which explores the restricted space in which no land is left fallow. The results improve on those of the prior NSGA-II and demonstrate that a combination of solution representations allows Differential Evolution to more thoroughly explore the multiobjective space of profit versus environment
Integrated Optimal Design of a Passive Wind Turbine System: An Experimental Validation
This work presents design and experimentation of a
full passive wind turbine system without active electronic part(power and control). The efficiency of such device can be obtained only if the system design parameters are mutually adapted through an Integrated Optimal Design (IOD) method. This approach based on multiobjective optimization, aims at concurrently optimizing the wind power extraction and the global system losses for a given wind speed profile while reducing the weight of the wind turbine generator. It allows us to obtain the main characteristics (geometric and energetic features) of the optimal Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) for the passive wind turbine. Finally, experiments on the PMSG prototype built from this work show a good agreement with theoretical predictions. This validates the design approach and confirms the effectiveness of such passive device
Optimised configuration of sensing elements for control and fault tolerance applied to an electro-magnetic suspension system
New technological advances and the requirements to increasingly abide
by new safety laws in engineering design projects highly affects industrial
products in areas such as automotive, aerospace and railway industries.
The necessity arises to design reduced-cost hi-tech products with minimal
complexity, optimal performance, effective parameter robustness properties,
and high reliability with fault tolerance. In this context the control system
design plays an important role and the impact is crucial relative to the level
of cost efficiency of a product.
Measurement of required information for the operation of the design
control system in any product is a vital issue, and in such cases a number of
sensors can be available to select from in order to achieve the desired system
properties. However, for a complex engineering system a manual procedure
to select the best sensor set subject to the desired system properties can
be very complicated, time consuming or even impossible to achieve. This is
more evident in the case of large number of sensors and the requirement to
comply with optimum performance.
The thesis describes a comprehensive study of sensor selection for control
and fault tolerance with the particular application of an ElectroMagnetic
Levitation system (being an unstable, nonlinear, safety-critical system with
non-trivial control performance requirements). The particular aim of the
presented work is to identify effective sensor selection frameworks subject to
given system properties for controlling (with a level of fault tolerance) the
MagLev suspension system. A particular objective of the work is to identify
the minimum possible sensors that can be used to cover multiple sensor faults,
while maintaining optimum performance with the remaining sensors.
The tools employed combine modern control strategies and multiobjective
constraint optimisation (for tuning purposes) methods. An important part
of the work is the design and construction of a 25kg MagLev suspension
to be used for experimental verification of the proposed sensor selection
frameworks
