    Trust-Based Control of Robotic Manipulators in Collaborative Assembly in Manufacturing

    Human-robot interaction (HRI) is vastly addressed in the field of automation and manufacturing. Most of the HRI literature in manufacturing explored physical human-robot interaction (pHRI) and invested in finding means for ensuring safety and optimized effort sharing amongst a team of humans and robots. The recent emergence of safe, lightweight, and human-friendly robots has opened a new realm for human-robot collaboration (HRC) in collaborative manufacturing. For such robots with the new HRI functionalities to interact closely and effectively with a human coworker, new human-centered controllers that integrate both physical and social interaction are demanded. Social human-robot interaction (sHRI) has been demonstrated in robots with affective abilities in education, social services, health care, and entertainment. Nonetheless, sHRI should not be limited only to those areas. In particular, we focus on human trust in robot as a basis of social interaction. Human trust in robot and robot anthropomorphic features have high impacts on sHRI. Trust is one of the key factors in sHRI and a prerequisite for effective HRC. Trust characterizes the reliance and tendency of human in using robots. Factors within a robotic system (e.g. performance, reliability, or attribute), the task, and the surrounding environment can all impact the trust dynamically. Over-reliance or under-reliance might occur due to improper trust, which results in poor team collaboration, and hence higher task load and lower overall task performance. The goal of this dissertation is to develop intelligent control algorithms for the manipulator robots that integrate both physical and social HRI factors in the collaborative manufacturing. First, the evolution of human trust in a collaborative robot model is identified and verified through a series of human-in-the-loop experiments. This model serves as a computational trust model estimating an objective criterion for the evolution of human trust in robot rather than estimating an individual\u27s actual level of trust. Second, an HRI-based framework is developed for controlling the speed of a robot performing pick and place tasks. The impact of the consideration of the different level of interaction in the robot controller on the overall efficiency and HRI criteria such as human perceived workload and trust and robot usability is studied using a series of human-in-the-loop experiments. Third, an HRI-based framework is developed for planning and controlling the robot motion in performing hand-over tasks to the human. Again, series of human-in-the-loop experimental studies are conducted to evaluate the impact of implementation of the frameworks on overall efficiency and HRI criteria such as human workload and trust and robot usability. Finally, another framework is proposed for the cooperative manipulation of a common object by a team of a human and a robot. This framework proposes a trust-based role allocation strategy for adjusting the proactive behavior of the robot performing a cooperative manipulation task in HRC scenarios. For the mentioned frameworks, the results of the experiments show that integrating HRI in the robot controller leads to a lower human workload while it maintains a threshold level of human trust in robot and does not degrade robot usability and efficiency

    Terrain Classification from Body-mounted Cameras during Human Locomotion

    Abstract—This paper presents a novel algorithm for terrain type classification based on monocular video captured from the viewpoint of human locomotion. A texture-based algorithm is developed to classify the path ahead into multiple groups that can be used to support terrain classification. Gait is taken into account in two ways. Firstly, for key frame selection, when regions with homogeneous texture characteristics are updated, the fre-quency variations of the textured surface are analysed and used to adaptively define filter coefficients. Secondly, it is incorporated in the parameter estimation process where probabilities of path consistency are employed to improve terrain-type estimation. When tested with multiple classes that directly affect mobility a hard surface, a soft surface and an unwalkable area- our proposed method outperforms existing methods by up to 16%, and also provides improved robustness.     Innovative robot hand designs of reduced complexity for dexterous manipulation

    This thesis investigates the mechanical design of robot hands to sensibly reduce the system complexity in terms of the number of actuators and sensors, and control needs for performing grasping and in-hand manipulations of unknown objects. Human hands are known to be the most complex, versatile, dexterous manipulators in nature, from being able to operate sophisticated surgery to carry out a wide variety of daily activity tasks (e.g. preparing food, changing cloths, playing instruments, to name some). However, the understanding of why human hands can perform such fascinating tasks still eludes complete comprehension. Since at least the end of the sixteenth century, scientists and engineers have tried to match the sensory and motor functions of the human hand. As a result, many contemporary humanoid and anthropomorphic robot hands have been developed to closely replicate the appearance and dexterity of human hands, in many cases using sophisticated designs that integrate multiple sensors and actuators---which make them prone to error and difficult to operate and control, particularly under uncertainty. In recent years, several simplification approaches and solutions have been proposed to develop more effective and reliable dexterous robot hands. These techniques, which have been based on using underactuated mechanical designs, kinematic synergies, or compliant materials, to name some, have opened up new ways to integrate hardware enhancements to facilitate grasping and dexterous manipulation control and improve reliability and robustness. Following this line of thought, this thesis studies four robot hand hardware aspects for enhancing grasping and manipulation, with a particular focus on dexterous in-hand manipulation. Namely: i) the use of passive soft fingertips; ii) the use of rigid and soft active surfaces in robot fingers; iii) the use of robot hand topologies to create particular in-hand manipulation trajectories; and iv) the decoupling of grasping and in-hand manipulation by introducing a reconfigurable palm. In summary, the findings from this thesis provide important notions for understanding the significance of mechanical and hardware elements in the performance and control of human manipulation. These findings show great potential in developing robust, easily programmable, and economically viable robot hands capable of performing dexterous manipulations under uncertainty, while exhibiting a valuable subset of functions of the human hand.Open Acces

    Pushing with a physics-based model

However, pushing results are hard to predict, because the physical parameters that govern the pushing motion are difficult to measure. We derived a physics-based box pushing model and implemented a feedback-based pushing pipeline using the model. Experimental results show that our pushing model has fair predictive power and our pushing pipeline can reliably push the target to the goal. We compared our physics-based method to a minimalistic baseline pushing method and showed that our method is more accurate and reliable.by Huan Liu.M.Eng

    Dynamic modeling, property investigation, and adaptive controller design of serial robotic manipulators modeled with structural compliance

    Research results on general serial robotic manipulators modeled with structural compliances are presented. Two compliant manipulator modeling approaches, distributed and lumped parameter models, are used in this study. System dynamic equations for both compliant models are derived by using the first and second order influence coefficients. Also, the properties of compliant manipulator system dynamics are investigated. One of the properties, which is defined as inaccessibility of vibratory modes, is shown to display a distinct character associated with compliant manipulators. This property indicates the impact of robot geometry on the control of structural oscillations. Example studies are provided to illustrate the physical interpretation of inaccessibility of vibratory modes. Two types of controllers are designed for compliant manipulators modeled by either lumped or distributed parameter techniques. In order to maintain the generality of the results, neither linearization is introduced. Example simulations are given to demonstrate the controller performance. The second type controller is also built for general serial robot arms and is adaptive in nature which can estimate uncertain payload parameters on-line and simultaneously maintain trajectory tracking properties. The relation between manipulator motion tracking capability and convergence of parameter estimation properties is discussed through example case studies. The effect of control input update delays on adaptive controller performance is also studied

    A novel path planning approach for smart cargo ships based on anisotropic fast marching

    Path planning is an essential tool for smart cargo ships that navigate in coastal waters, inland waters or other crowded waters. These ships require expert and intelligent systems to plan safe paths in order to avoid collision with both static and dynamic obstacles. This research proposes a novel path planning approach based on the anisotropic fast marching (FM) method to specifically assist with safe operations in complex marine navigation environments. A repulsive force field is specially produced to describe the safe area distribution surrounding obstacles based on the knowledge of human. In addition, a joint potential field is created to evaluate the travel cost and a gradient descent method is used to search for appropriate paths from the start point to the end point. Meanwhile, the approach can be used to constantly optimize the paths with the help of the expert knowledge in collision avoidance. Particularly, the approach is validated and evaluated through simulations. The obtained results show that it is capable of providing a reasonable and smooth path in a crowded waters. Moreover, the ability of this approach exhibits a significant contribution to the development of expert and intelligent systems in autonomous collision avoidance

    Model learning for trajectory tracking of robot manipulators

    Abstract Model based controllers have drastically improved robot performance, increasing task accuracy while reducing control effort. Nevertheless, all this was realized with a very strong assumption: the exact knowledge of the physical properties of both the robot and the environment that surrounds it. This assertion is often misleading: in fact modern robots are modeled in a very approximate way and, more important, the environment is almost never static and completely known. Also for systems very simple, such as robot manipulators, these assumptions are still too strong and must be relaxed. Many methods were developed which, exploiting previous experiences, are able to refine the nominal model: from classic identification techniques to more modern machine learning based approaches. Indeed, the topic of this thesis is the investigation of these data driven techniques in the context of robot control for trajectory tracking. In the first two chapters, preliminary knowledge is provided on both model based controllers, used in robotics to assure precise trajectory tracking, and model learning techniques. In the following three chapters, are presented the novelties introduced by the author in this context with respect to the state of the art: three works with the same premise (an inaccurate system modeling), an identical goal (accurate trajectory tracking control) but with small differences according to the specific platform of application (fully actuated, underactuated, redundant robots). In all the considered architectures, an online learning scheme has been introduced to correct the nominal feedback linearization control law. Indeed, the method has been primarily introduced in the literature to cope with fully actuated systems, showing its efficacy in the accurate tracking of joint space trajectories also with an inaccurate dynamic model. The main novelty of the technique was the use of only kinematics information, instead of torque measurements (in general very noisy), to online retrieve and compensate the dynamic mismatches. After that the method has been extended to underactuated robots. This new architecture was composed by an online learning correction of the controller, acting on the actuated part of the system (the nominal partial feedback linearization), and an offline planning phase, required to realize a dynamically feasible trajectory also for the zero dynamics of the system. The scheme was iterative: after each trial, according to the collected information, both the phases were improved and then repeated until the task achievement. Also in this case the method showed its capability, both in numerical simulations and on real experiments on a robotics platform. Eventually the method has been applied to redundant systems: differently from before, in this context the task consisted in the accurate tracking of a Cartesian end effector trajectory. In principle very similar to the fully actuated case, the presence of redundancy slowed down drastically the learning machinery convergence, worsening the performance. In order to cope with this, a redundancy resolution was proposed that, exploiting an approximation of the learning algorithm (Gaussian process regression), allowed to locally maximize the information and so select the most convenient self motion for the system; moreover, all of this was realized with just the resolution of a quadratic programming problem. Also in this case the method showed its performance, realizing an accurate online tracking while reducing both the control effort and the joints velocity, obtaining so a natural behaviour. The thesis concludes with summary considerations on the proposed approach and with possible future directions of research
