    This is the published version.These Best Practices — also referred to as the CDP Best Practices -- have been created through the collaboration of working groups pulled from library, museum and archive practitioners. Version 1 was created through funding from the Institute for Museum and Library Services through a grant to the University of Denver and the Colorado Digitization Program in 2003. Version 2 of the guidelines were published by BCR in 2008 and represents a significant update of practices under the leadership of their CDP Digital Imaging Best Practices Working Group. The intent has been to help standardize and share protocols governing the implementation of digital projects. The result of these collaborations is a set of best practice documents that cover issues such as digital imaging, Dublin Core metadata and digital audio. These best practice documents are intended to help with the design and implementation of digitization projects. Because they were collaboratively designed by experts in the field, you can be certain they include the best possible information, in addition to having been field tested and proven in practice. These best practice documents are an ongoing collaborative project, and LYRASIS will add information and new documents as they are developed

    With the advent of Big Data technologies-the capacity to store and efficiently process large sets of data, doors of opportunities for developing business intelligence that was previously unknown, has opened. Each phase in the processing of this data requires specialized infrastructures. One such phase, the preservation and archiving of data, has proven its usefulness time and again. Data archives are processed using novel data mining methods to elicit vital data gathered over long periods of time and efficiently audit the growth of a business or an organization. Data preservation is also an important aspect of business processes which helps in avoiding loss of important information due to system failures, human errors and natural calamities. This thesis investigates the need, discusses possibilities and presents a novel, highly cost-effective, unified, long- term storage solution for data. Some of the common processes followed in large-scale data warehousing systems are analyzed for overlooked, inordinate shortcomings and a profitably feasible solution is conceived for them. The gap between the general needs of 'efficient' long-term storage and common, current functionalities is analyzed. An attempt to bridge this gap is made through the use of a hybrid, hierarchical media based, performance enhancing middleware and a monolithic namespace filesystem in a new storage architecture, Tape Cloud. The scope of studies carried out by us involves interpreting the effects of using heterogeneous storage media in terms of operational behavior, average latency of data transactions and power consumption. The results show the advantages of the new storage system by demonstrating the difference in operating costs, personnel costs and total cost of ownership from varied perspectives in a business model.Computer Science, Department o

    Dominant Design or Multiple Designs: The Flash Memory Card Case

    Literature suggests that in battles between competing designs, ultimately one design will emerge as dominant to the detriment of the others. Various factors and forces have been identified to explain this phenomenon. Yet, sometimes no dominant design emerges at all and multiple competing designs coexist in the market.. The Flash Memory Card Industry provides an example of this. In this study, we use this example as a case to investigate the circumstances under which an industry has a tendency toward multiple designs. The case shows that a combination of factors may result in multiple designs and we argue that such a combination of factors will increasingly also apply in other cases

    Digital humanities and the elusive “thing”

    The present article examines the current academic encounter with the “thing” of the digital humanities, i.e., with the digital as both a source of crisis and an attempt to control this crisis. By mapping conceptualisations of the digital as an object of study, a tool and the constitution of new practices, the “thing” is presented from the threefold perspective of access, evidence and control: access as the newfound availability and emancipation of the digital object, evidence as the cognitive approach marshalled in response to the surge of data, and control as the new ruling practice, whether academic, ethical or critical. The article seeks to demonstrate that the “thing” cannot be immediately grasped or pinned down, that whenever you think you have it, it turns out to be somewhere else. The proposed threefold perspective of access, evidence, and control is but a way of closing in on something that remains forever elusive
