    Next Generation Auto-Identification and Traceability Technologies for Industry 5.0: A Methodology and Practical Use Case for the Shipbuilding Industry

    [Abstract] Industry 5.0 follows the steps of the Industry 4.0 paradigm and seeks for revolutionizing the way industries operate. In fact, Industry 5.0 focuses on research and innovation to support industrial production sustainability and place the well-being of industrial workers at the center of the production process. Thus, Industry 5.0 relies on three pillars: it is human-centric, it encourages sustainability and it is aimed at developing resilience against disruptions. Such core aspects cannot be fully achieved without a transparent end-to-end human-centered traceability throughout the value chain. As a consequence, Auto-Identification (Auto-ID) technologies play a key role, since they are able to provide automated item recognition, positioning and tracking without human intervention or in cooperation with industrial operators. Although the most popular Auto-ID technologies provide a certain degree of security and productivity, there are still open challenges for future Industry 5.0 factories. This article analyzes and evaluates the Auto-ID landscape and delivers a holistic perspective and understanding of the most popular and the latest technologies, looking for solutions that cope with harsh, diverse and complex industrial scenarios. In addition, it describes a methodology for selecting Auto-ID technologies for Industry 5.0 factories. Such a methodology is applied to a specific use case of the shipbuilding industry that requires identifying the main components of a ship during its construction and repair. To validate the outcomes of the methodology, a practical evaluation of passive and active UHF RFID tags was performed in an Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) under construction, showing that a careful selection and evaluation of the tags enables product identification and tracking even in areas with a very high density of metallic objects.     An unmanned aircraft system to detect a radiological point source using RIMA software architecture

    Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs), together with the miniaturisation of computers, sensors, and electronics, offer new remote sensing applications. However, there is a lack of hardware and software support to effectively develop the potential of UASs in different remote sensing applications, such as the detection of radioactive sources. This paper presents the design, development and validation of a UAS for the detection of an uncontrolled and point radioactive source. The article describes a flexible and reusable software architecture for detecting the radioactive source (NaTcO 4 , containing 99m Tc) with a gamma-ray Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) spectrometer as a proof of concept. The UAS is equipped with multichannel air-ground communications to perform missions beyond line of sight and onboard computation to process samples in real time and thus react to any anomaly detected during the mission. An ad hoc ground control station (GCS) has also been developed for the correct interpretation of the radioactive samples taken by the UAS. Radiological spectra plots, contour mapping and waterfall plots are some of the elements used in the ad hoc GCS. The article shows the results obtained in a flight campaign performing different flights at different altitudes and speeds over the radiological source, demonstrating the viability of the system.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Sky camera network and data acquisition system development for the purpose of Short-term Photo-Voltaic power output forecasting

    A sky camera network was installed at Murdoch University capturing high resolution whole sky images every ten seconds for a study, to be completed by the University of Oldenburg, investigating short term solar irradiance forecasting[1]. The study investigates the effectiveness of sky camera imaging and processing techniques used to determine forecasted cloud induced variations on photo-voltaic (PV) power systems based on images and validation data acquired at Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia. This project demonstrates the effectiveness of two 180-degree fish-eye Vivotek network security cameras recording 1920x1920 pixel RGB images simultaneously at 10 second intervals to provide sufficient information for accurate solar irradiance and PV power output modelling. Results from the collaboration between Murdoch University and the University of Oldenburg were presented at the World Renewable Energy Congress which provide a detailed analysis of solar forecasting accuracy and the associated fuel savings in comparison to other forms of generation and PV management systems. A persistence method of forecasting was determined to properly utilize sky camera forecasting’s ability to predict future cloud events and reduce the spinning reserve (SR) that is required in PV and diesel power systems. The results showed that a total of 61% of the time between 10th November and 28th December 2016 the model identified clear sky irradiance. A total of 84 cloud events occurred during this period and 76 of these were correctly identified giving a total miss rate of ~8% [2]. Based on these findings, a further study was conducted by the University of Oldenburg which determined estimated fuel savings achieved with a sky camera based forecasting control method. The findings showed up to 5.5% reduction of fuel consumption in a PV diesel power network with 60% of total capacity being installed PV[3]. The forecasting method used was outlined in a report (West et al 2014) and variations of the image processing methods required were investigated at Murdoch University to explore potential alternatives to more complicated and computationally expensive methods. Various further research is proposed and the effectiveness of alternative methods is presented. The sky camera network and data acquisition system that was developed is discussed in detail and shown to be capable of providing the information required for the forecasting and validation of cloud induced power variations in PV systems

    In dem vorliegenden Tagungsband sind die Beiträge des Fachgesprächs Drahtlose Sensornetze 2008 zusammengefasst. Ziel dieses Fachgesprächs ist es, Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler aus diesem Gebiet die Möglichkeit zu einem informellen Austausch zu geben – wobei immer auch Teilnehmer aus der Industrieforschung willkommen sind, die auch in diesem Jahr wieder teilnehmen.Das Fachgespräch ist eine betont informelle Veranstaltung der GI/ITG-Fachgruppe „Kommunikation und Verteilte Systeme“ (www.kuvs.de). Es ist ausdrücklich keine weitere Konferenz mit ihrem großen Overhead und der Anforderung, fertige und möglichst „wasserdichte“ Ergebnisse zu präsentieren, sondern es dient auch ganz explizit dazu, mit Neueinsteigern auf der Suche nach ihrem Thema zu diskutieren und herauszufinden, wo die Herausforderungen an die zukünftige Forschung überhaupt liegen.Das Fachgespräch Drahtlose Sensornetze 2008 findet in Berlin statt, in den Räumen der Freien Universität Berlin, aber in Kooperation mit der ScatterWeb GmbH. Auch dies ein Novum, es zeigt, dass das Fachgespräch doch deutlich mehr als nur ein nettes Beisammensein unter einem Motto ist.Für die Organisation des Rahmens und der Abendveranstaltung gebührt Dank den beiden Mitgliedern im Organisationskomitee, Kirsten Terfloth und Georg Wittenburg, aber auch Stefanie Bahe, welche die redaktionelle Betreuung des Tagungsbands übernommen hat, vielen anderen Mitgliedern der AG Technische Informatik der FU Berlin und natürlich auch ihrem Leiter, Prof. Jochen Schiller

Meanwhile, visible light communication (VLC) using light devices such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) has been deemed to be a promising candidate in the heterogeneous wireless networks that may collaborate with radio frequencies (RF) wireless networks. In particular, light-fidelity has a great potential for deployment in future indoor environments because of its high throughput and security advantages. This paper provides a comprehensive study of a novel positioning technology based on visible white LED lights, which has attracted much attention from both academia and industry. The essential characteristics and principles of this system are deeply discussed, and relevant positioning algorithms and designs are classified and elaborated. This paper undertakes a thorough investigation into current LED-based indoor positioning systems and compares their performance through many aspects, such as test environment, accuracy, and cost. It presents indoor hybrid positioning systems among VLC and other systems (e.g., inertial sensors and RF systems). We also review and classify outdoor VLC positioning applications for the first time. Finally, this paper surveys major advances as well as open issues, challenges, and future research directions in VLC positioning systems.Peer reviewe

    An architecture for intelligent health assessment enabled IEEE 1451 compliant smart sensors

    As systems become increasingly complex and costly, potential failure mechanisms and indicators are numerous and difficult to identify, while the cost of loss is very expensive - human lives, replacement units, and impacts to national security. In order to ensure the safety and long-term reliability of vehicles, structures, and devices attention must be directed toward the assessment and management of system health. System health is the key component that links data, information, and knowledge to action. Integrated Systems Health Management (ISHM) doctrine calls for comprehensive real-time health assessment and management of systems where the distillation of raw data into information takes place within sensors and actuators. This thesis develops novel field programmable health assessment capability for sensors and actuators in ISHM. Health assessment and feature extraction algorithms are implemented on a sensor or actuator through the Embedded Routine Manager (ERM) API. Algorithms are described using Health Electronic Datasheets (HEDS) to provide more flexible run-time operation. Interfacing is accomplished through IEEE Standard 1451 for Smart Sensors and Actuators, connecting ISHM with the instrumentation network of the future. These key elements are validated using exemplar algorithms to detect noise, spike, and flat-line events onboard the ISHM enabled Methane Thruster Testbed Project (MTTP) at NASA Stennis Space Center in Mississippi

    Energy waste significantly contributes to increased costs in the automotive manufacturing industry, which is subject to energy usage restrictions and taxation from national and international policy makers and restrictions and charges from national energy providers. For example, the UK Climate Change Levy, charged to businesses at 0.554p/kWh equates to 7.28% of a manufacturing business’s energy bill based on an average total usage rate of 7.61p/kWh. Internet of Things (IoT) energy monitoring systems are being developed, however, there has been limited consideration of services for efficient energy-use and minimisation of production costs in industry. This paper presents the design, development and validation of a novel, adaptive Cyber-Physical Toolset to optimise cumulative plant energy consumption through characterisation and prediction of the active and reactive power of three-phase industrial machine processes.
