    Get PDF
In public health, politics, and advertising, interactive content spurred increased elaboration from audiences that were otherwise least likely to engage with a message. This study sought to examine interactivity as an agricultural communication strategy through the lens of the Elaboration Likelihood Model. Respondents were randomly assigned a static or interactive data visualization concerning the production of peaches and blueberries in Georgia, then asked to list their thoughts in accordance with Petty and Cacioppo’s thought-listing measure. Respondents significantly exhibited higher elaboration with the interactive message as opposed to the static, extending the results of past research in other communication realms to agricultural communication as well. This increase in attitude and cognition encourages agricultural communicators to pursue the use of more interactive elements in their messaging

The present study aims to educate starters to work on the Saudi Labor and Workmen Law and making a proposal to educate them by employing animated infographics. It also defines the quality of the animated infographics from the perspective of the target group to educate starters to work on the Saudi Labor and Workmen Law. Therefore, the authors selected and designed animated infographics using Vyond software of the most important articles in the implementing regulation of the Saudi Labor and Workmen Law from signing to terminating a work contract to educate the fresh graduates and starters in Saudi Arabia. They also developed and applied a questionnaire to (50) fresh graduates and starters to measure the feasibility of employing animated infographics in raising their awareness of the Saudi Labor and Workmen Law. The results showed that the animated infographic proved effective in raising the awareness of the participants of the Saudi Labor and Workmen Law. The authors recommended the need to employ animated infographics in educating starters on the developments of the Saudi Labor and Workmen Law to enhance learning. They also recommended that the field training supervisors should use the designed animated infographic in developing the programs of graduate qualification for the labor market

ABSTRACT Western society reflects an âeikoncentric eraâ when contemporary instruction has become image -centered. Textbooks, journals, popular media as well as computer-based and web- based instructional media are filled by pictures that are intended to accomplish learning. Imagery is widely believed to represent an efficient, understandable method for relaying information and clarifying instruction for nearly all learners. However, those who subscribe to the adage âa picture is worth a thousand wordsâ often fail to acknowledge individual differences in visual comprehension and cognition. The field dependent-independent (FDI) cognitive style describes individual learner differences that can thwart visual learning. Information graphics are among the frequently used types of imagery that portray data. There is little empirical evidence to guide their design, and their creation is often based on intuition or opinion. This study researched the ways FDI learners comprehend and aesthetically assess minimalist information graphics, pictograms and infographics. Those participants who represented the most extreme field-dependent or field-independent learners were invited to participate in a two-part study. An instrument named the Comparative Information Graphic Test (CIG-T) was developed for testing comprehension of and perceived aesthetic efficacy, value and preference for minimalist information graphics, pictograms and infographics by FDI learner

A comparative visual content analysis of the CDC and WHO COVID-19 infographics

In this study, I conducted a comparative visual content analysis of the CDC and WHO COVID-19 infographics. I considered infographics as an important genre of communication during such times because they not only provided sufficient information to the audience but did so in an engaging manner. The goal of my study was to think about the role of infographics in the context of health and risk communication during a pandemic, and to emphasize on the rhetorical elements that constitute the creation of infographics by major health organizations. I specifically focused on three elements: the kinds of information communicated through infographics, the text and graphic organization in the infographics, and the rhetorical strategies. The results of my analysis indicated that (1) the CDC and WHO infographics included how-to information, dos and don’ts, step-by-step guidelines, checklists, and general informational topics on COVID-19 in their infographics; (2) the CDC infographics had structured text and graphic organization that established a reading pattern, whereas the WHO infographics followed an abstract design that gave the audience more freedom to explore the infographic; and (3) Both the CDC and WHO used visuals to make information more understandable, used imperatives whenever the aim was to initiate action, avoided frightening references in the infographics and focused on helpful information, and used document design according to the reading patterns of the audience. I concluded that audience was the key factor that stemmed the differences in the implementation of rhetorical strategies in the CDC and WHO infographics --Abstract, page iii

Modern technological innovations are constantly seen throughout every aspect of life, and higher education is no exception. To this end, this article sheds some light on the types of and pedagogical value of new media adopted by academics to promote self-directed learning at the University of South Africa. The study answers the following questions: Which new media approaches have been adopted by academics to enhance self-directed learning? What is the pedagogical value of new media in an ODL environment? A qualitative approach was employed and data was collected through face-to-face interviews with 30 purposively selected Unisa academics. The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology model was found relevant to this study. Thematic categorisation was employed for data analysis. The findings depict that a variety of new media have been adopted to promote self-directed learning at Unisa. The study also found that new media are playing a pivotal role in promoting self-directed learning in an ODL landscape. It is therefore important to note that new media have emerged as strong catalysts in fostering pedagogical transformation.College of EducationM. Ed (Open and Distance Learning
