Occupational safety and health practice: a study at Infrastructure construction work
Safety is the state of being âsafeâ, the condition of being protected against physical, social, spiritual, financial, political, emotional, occupational, psychological, educational or other types of consequences of failure, damage, error, accidents, harm or any other event which could be considered non-desirable. Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. In that case, Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) is an act that ensure the well-being of workers in a broad scope of many specialized fields. This study is focused on the construction of a police headquarters located in Seriab, Perlis. A big number of construction companies in Malaysia might not perform safety practice for their workers, lack of safety appliances, and did not perform a regular safety check-up on their workers as the reason was they want to earn more profits and they took the safety measures of their foreign workers for granted. Note that most of construction workers in Malaysia are immigrants. The data collection was carried out through site investigation using Preliminary Hazard analysis (PHA), HIRARC form and interview session with a worker in the construction site. The objective of this study is to spread the awareness of the importance of safety among workers in the construction site based on the existing potential hazards. This report was initially to identify the hazard on the construction site and to analyse the occupational safety and health factor in the workplace. The results are to analyse and suggest recommendations for improving occupational safety and health act in the construction site. Practicing a good safety measures in the workplace will ensure the well-being of workers
Design and implementation of a multi-octave-band audio camera for realtime diagnosis
Noise pollution investigation takes advantage of two common methods of
diagnosis: measurement using a Sound Level Meter and acoustical imaging. The
former enables a detailed analysis of the surrounding noise spectrum whereas
the latter is rather used for source localization. Both approaches complete
each other, and merging them into a unique system, working in realtime, would
offer new possibilities of dynamic diagnosis. This paper describes the design
of a complete system for this purpose: imaging in realtime the acoustic field
at different octave bands, with a convenient device. The acoustic field is
sampled in time and space using an array of MEMS microphones. This recent
technology enables a compact and fully digital design of the system. However,
performing realtime imaging with resource-intensive algorithm on a large amount
of measured data confronts with a technical challenge. This is overcome by
executing the whole process on a Graphic Processing Unit, which has recently
become an attractive device for parallel computing
High-Performance Cloud Computing: A View of Scientific Applications
Scientific computing often requires the availability of a massive number of
computers for performing large scale experiments. Traditionally, these needs
have been addressed by using high-performance computing solutions and installed
facilities such as clusters and super computers, which are difficult to setup,
maintain, and operate. Cloud computing provides scientists with a completely
new model of utilizing the computing infrastructure. Compute resources, storage
resources, as well as applications, can be dynamically provisioned (and
integrated within the existing infrastructure) on a pay per use basis. These
resources can be released when they are no more needed. Such services are often
offered within the context of a Service Level Agreement (SLA), which ensure the
desired Quality of Service (QoS). Aneka, an enterprise Cloud computing
solution, harnesses the power of compute resources by relying on private and
public Clouds and delivers to users the desired QoS. Its flexible and service
based infrastructure supports multiple programming paradigms that make Aneka
address a variety of different scenarios: from finance applications to
computational science. As examples of scientific computing in the Cloud, we
present a preliminary case study on using Aneka for the classification of gene
expression data and the execution of fMRI brain imaging workflow.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, conference pape
A general framework for efficient FPGA implementation of matrix product
Original article can be found at: http://www.medjcn.com/ Copyright Softmotor LimitedHigh performance systems are required by the developers for fast processing of computationally intensive applications. Reconfigurable hardware devices in the form of Filed-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) have been proposed as viable system building blocks in the construction of high performance systems at an economical price. Given the importance and the use of matrix algorithms in scientific computing applications, they seem ideal candidates to harness and exploit the advantages offered by FPGAs. In this paper, a system for matrix algorithm cores generation is described. The system provides a catalog of efficient user-customizable cores, designed for FPGA implementation, ranging in three different matrix algorithm categories: (i) matrix operations, (ii) matrix transforms and (iii) matrix decomposition. The generated core can be either a general purpose or a specific application core. The methodology used in the design and implementation of two specific image processing application cores is presented. The first core is a fully pipelined matrix multiplier for colour space conversion based on distributed arithmetic principles while the second one is a parallel floating-point matrix multiplier designed for 3D affine transformations.Peer reviewe
An Integrated Framework for Sensing Radio Frequency Spectrum Attacks on Medical Delivery Drones
Drone susceptibility to jamming or spoofing attacks of GPS, RF, Wi-Fi, and
operator signals presents a danger to future medical delivery systems. A
detection framework capable of sensing attacks on drones could provide the
capability for active responses. The identification of interference attacks has
applicability in medical delivery, disaster zone relief, and FAA enforcement
against illegal jamming activities. A gap exists in the literature for solo or
swarm-based drones to identify radio frequency spectrum attacks. Any
non-delivery specific function, such as attack sensing, added to a drone
involves a weight increase and additional complexity; therefore, the value must
exceed the disadvantages. Medical delivery, high-value cargo, and disaster zone
applications could present a value proposition which overcomes the additional
costs. The paper examines types of attacks against drones and describes a
framework for designing an attack detection system with active response
capabilities for improving the reliability of delivery and other medical
applications.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figures, 5 table
The review of heterogeneous design frameworks/Platforms for digital systems embedded in FPGAs and SoCs
Systems-on-a-chip integrate specialized modules to provide well-defined functionality. In order to guarantee its efficiency, designersare careful to choose high-level electronic components. In particular,FPGAs (field-programmable gate array) have demonstrated theirability to meet the requirements of emerging technology. However, traditional design methods cannot keep up with the speed andefficiency imposed by the embedded systems industry, so severalframeworks have been developed to simplify the design process of anelectronic system, from its modeling to its physical implementation. This paper illustrates some of them and presents a comparative studybetween them. Indeed, we have selected design methods of SoC(ESP4ML and HLS4ML, OpenESP, LiteX, RubyRTL, PyMTL,SysPy, PyRTL, DSSoC) and NoC networks on OCN chip (PyOCN)and in general on FPGA (PRGA, OpenFPGA, AnyHLS, PYNQ, andPyLog). The objective of this article is to analyze each tool at several levelsand to discuss the benefit of each in the scientific community. Wewill analyze several aspects constituting the architecture and thestructure of the platforms to make a comparative study of thehardware and software design flows of digital systems.
