    Engineering Adaptive Model-Driven User Interfaces

    Software applications that are very large-scale, can encompass hundreds of complex user interfaces (UIs). Such applications are commonly sold as feature-bloated off-the-shelf products to be used by people with variable needs in the required features and layout preferences. Although many UI adaptation approaches were proposed, several gaps and limitations including: extensibility and integration in legacy systems, still need to be addressed in the state-of-the-art adaptive UI development systems. This paper presents Role-Based UI Simplification (RBUIS) as a mechanism for increasing usability through adaptive behaviour by providing end-users with a minimal feature-set and an optimal layout, based on the context-of- use. RBUIS uses an interpreted runtime model-driven approach based on the Cedar Architecture, and is supported by the integrated development environment (IDE), Cedar Studio. RBUIS was evaluated by integrating it into OFBiz, an open-source ERP system. The integration method was assessed and measured by establishing and applying technical metrics. Afterwards, a usability study was carried out to evaluate whether UIs simplified with RBUIS show an improvement over their initial counterparts. This study leveraged questionnaires, checking task completion times and output quality, and eye-tracking. The results showed that UIs simplified with RBUIS significantly improve end-user efficiency, effectiveness, and perceived usability

    The industrial adoption of wireless sensor net- works (WSNs) is hampered by two main factors. First, there is a lack of integration of WSNs with business process modeling languages and back-ends. Second, programming WSNs is still challenging as it is mainly performed at the operating system level. To this end, we provide makeSense: a unified programming framework and a compilation chain that, from high-level business process specifications, generates code ready for deployment on WSN nodes

    Supporting policy-based contextual reconfiguration and adaptation in ubiquitous computing

    In order for pervasive computing systems to be able to perform tasks which support us in everyday life without requiring attention from the users of the environment, they need to adapt themselves in response to context. This makes context-awareness in general, and context-aware adaptation in particular, an essential requirement for pervasive computing systems. Two of the features of context-awareness are: contextual reconfiguration and contextual adaptation in which applications adapt their behaviour in response to context. We combine both these features of context-awareness to provide a broad scope of adaptation and put forward a system, called Policy-Based Contextual Reconfiguration and Adaptation (PCRA) that provides runtime support for both. The combination of both context-aware reconfiguration and context-aware adaptation provides a broad scope of adaptation and hence allows the development of diverse adaptive context-aware applications. However, another important issue is the choice of an effective means for developing, modifying and extending such applications. The main argument forming the basis of this thesis is that we advocate the use of a policy-based programming model and argue that it provides more effective means for developing, modifying and extending such applications. This thesis addresses other important surrounding issues which are associated with adaptive context-aware applications. These include the management of invalid bindings and the provision of seamless caching support for remote services involved in bindings for improved performance. The bindings may become invalid due to failure conditions that can arise due to network problems or migration of software components, causing bindings between the application component and remote service to become invalid. We have integrated reconfiguration support to manage bindings, and seamless caching support for remote services in PCRA. This thesis also describes the design and implementation of PCRA, which enables development of adaptive context-aware applications using policy specifications. Within PCRA, adaptive context-aware applications are modelled by specifying binding policies and adaptation policies. The use of policies within PCRA simplifies the development task because policies are expressed at a high-level of abstraction, and are expressed independently of each other. PCRA also allows the dynamic modification of applications since policies are independent units of execution and can be dynamically loaded and removed from the system. This is a powerful and useful capability as applications may evolve over time, i.e. the user needs and preferences may change, but re-starting is undesirable. We evaluate PCRA by comparing its features to other systems in the literature, and by performance measures

    Process-aware information systems (PAIS) must not freeze business processes, but should enable authorized users to deviate from the implemented workflows on-the-fly and to dynamically evolve them over time. While there has been a lot of work on the theoretical foundations of dynamic process changes, there is still a lack of implemented PAIS providing this dynamics. Designing the architecture of such adaptive PAIS, however, constitutes a big challenge due to the high complexity coming with dynamic changes. Besides this, performance, robustness, security and usability of the PAIS must not be affected by the added flexibility. In the AristaFlow project we follow a holistic approach to master this complexity. Based on a conceptual framework for adaptive process management, we have designed a sophisticated architecture for next generation process management technology. This paper discusses major design goals and basic architectural principles, gives insights into selected system components, and shows how change support features can be realized in an integrated and efficient manner
