Metadata for Digital Projects: An Overview of Practical Issues and Challenges
This workshop will provide an overview of practical issues relating to metadata and controlled vocabularies for digital resources. There will be a review of metadata standards and vocabulary tools; project management and project planning considerations; and issues relating to publication formats, usability, and sustainability. Workshop participants will do an in-classroom exercise in which they will create a “storyboard” for a proposed digital project, including a high-level metadata model and proposed vocabularies to be used
The role of data modelling in a modern geological survey
Data models are key elements in understanding the meaning (semantics) of data and communicating the information requirements for geoscientific-environmental research. The British Geological Survey (BGS) models its data to provide an understanding of: the organisational information requirements and its communication; the nature of its data independent of their physical representations and to facilitate the access of the data across multiple outlets. Generally, the components of an optimal model are that it has: structural validity, simplicity, expressibility, nonredundancy, shareability, integrity and can be presented diagrammatically. However, trade-offs are sometimes necessary to avoid the loss of simplicity in trying to achieve greater expressibility in a data model. The paper explores the role of data modelling at the British Geological Survey (BGS) in developing an integrated geoscientific data model, a component of a multi-tiered data architecture
Forensic Analysis of the Bumble Dating App for Android
Mobile applications that facilitate interaction between people have grown in popularity and,
as a result, the number of e-dating applications have expanded. In these types of applications, there
is usually a trade-off between user privacy and safety. On one hand, users want to keep their data
as private as possible, on the other hand, user identification forces accountability, which, hopefully,
will foster the development of responsible behaviors and minimize abuses. The Bumble e-dating app
has been growing in popularity and differs from other apps by giving women the power to make
the first contact after a match. Their main goal is to prevent women’s harassment. In this work, we
study the digital artifacts that can be found after the use of the Bumble app on Android devices.
Despite applying many measures to ensure data protection, it was possible to obtain information that
identifies users and exchanged messages. The data structure stored on the device is described, as
well as the artifacts with forensic value for an investigation. Moreover, a script was created to parse
and visualize the main forensic artifacts of the Bumble app.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

GEO Information System for Passportization and Visualization of Wide Computer Networks
The thesis is focused on the problem of the passportization and the visualization of wide computer networks with the usage of geographic information systems. It discusses principals and properties of geographic information systems and spatial databases that are frequently used as data carriers for geographic information systems. The main part of the thesis is dedicated to the passportization of computer networks with focusing on the physical network structure. After the definition of the passport format the thesis continues with the analysis, the proposal, the implementation and the testing of the geographic information system for managing and visualization of the passport in this format. The thesis is ended by a case study that demonstrates the passportization process of an access computer network in the implemented system.
Metadata for information governance
In the emerging context of data proliferation on digital media, the importance of metadata is becoming apparent. Records managers and librarians have been working many years on metadata conceptualization and standardization for digital humanities and recordkeeping purposes. The lessons learned should serve these new needs. Metadata are key elements in information governance and require global vision, conceptual clarity and accountability
This paper makes a revision of metadata schemas concept, typology and use for information
discovery, preservation and access in the current digital records and archives landscape, as well
as the recordkeeping tasks around them. It analyses the changes and challenges in document
description, from the traditional standards like ISAD (G) to the most new metadata standards
founded on XML metalanguage and in a semantic model of metadata schemas. It deals with
specially the reflection about the challenges on digital records management and retrieval in the
face of imminent electronic Administration, Government online and all issues related to
electronic transactions and public bureaucracy in the nowadays Information Society
Modeling and estimating the economic and social impact of the results of the project Re-search Alps
The idea behind the Re-search Alps project has been conceived inside within the EUSALP Action Group 1 - “to develop an effective research and innovation ecosystem” (AG1). EUSALP is the EU-Strategy for the Alpine Region, which is composed of seven countries: Austria, France, Germany, Italy Liechtenstein, Slovenia and Switzerland. The strategy aims at ensuring mutually beneficial interactions between the mountain regions at its core and the surrounding lowlands and urban areas. The goal of the Re-search Alps project is the publication on the web of an open dataset describing the private and public laboratories, research and innovation centers (hereinafter, referred as “labs”, in short) existing in the seven aforementioned countries, with particular reference to the 48 Regions constituting the Alpine Area
