A novel equivalent definition of modified Bessel functions for performance analysis of multi-hop wireless communication systems
A statistical model is derived for the equivalent signal-to-noise ratio of the Source-to-Relay-to-Destination (S-R-D) link for Amplify-and-Forward (AF) relaying systems that are subject to block Rayleigh-fading. The probability density function and the cumulated density function of the S-R-D link SNR involve modified Bessel functions of the second kind. Using fractional-calculus mathematics, a novel approach is introduced to rewrite those Bessel functions (and the statistical model of the S-R-D link SNR) in series form using simple elementary functions. Moreover, a statistical characterization of the total receive-SNR at the destination, corresponding to the S-R-D and the S-D link SNR, is provided for a more general relaying scenario in which the destination receives signals from both the relay and the source and processes them using maximum ratio combining (MRC). Using the novel statistical model for the total receive SNR at the destination, accurate and simple analytical expressions for the outage probability, the bit error probability, and the ergodic capacity are obtained. The analytical results presented in this paper provide a theoretical framework to analyze the performance of the AF cooperative systems with an MRC receiver
DMT Optimal On-Demand Relaying for Mesh Networks
This paper presents a new cooperative MAC (Medium Access Control) protocol called BRIAF (Best Relay based Incremental Amplify-and-Forward). The proposed protocol presents two features: on-demand relaying and selection of the best relay terminal. âOn-demand relayingâ means that a cooperative transmission is implemented between a source terminal and a destination terminal only when the destination terminal fails in decoding the data transmitted by the source terminal. This feature maximizes the spatial multiplexing gain r of the transmission. âSelection of the best relay terminalâ means that a selection of the best relay among a set of (m-1) relay candidates is implemented when a cooperative transmission is needed. This feature maximizes the diversity order d(r) of the transmission. Hence, an optimal DMT (Diversity Multiplexing Tradeoff) curve is achieved with a diversity order d(r) = m(1-r) for 0 †r †1
Trading Wireless Information and Power Transfer: Relay Selection to Minimize the Outage Probability
This paper studies the outage probability minimization problem for a multiple
relay network with energy harvesting constraints. The relays are hybrid nodes
used for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer from the source
radio frequency (RF) signals. There is a trade-off associated with the amount
of time a relay node is used for energy and information transfer. Large
intervals of information transfer implies little time for energy harvesting
from RF signals and thus, high probability of outage events. We propose relay
selection schemes for a cooperative system with a fixed number of RF powered
relays. We address both causal and non-causal channel state information cases
at the relay--destination link and evaluate the trade-off associated with
information/power transfer in the context of minimization of outage
probability.Comment: IEEE GlobalSiP, 201
Outage Analysis for SWIPT-Enabled Two-Way Cognitive Cooperative Communications
In this paper, we study a cooperative cognitive radio network (CCRN) where
the secondary user-transmitter (SU-Tx) assists bi-directional communication
between a pair of primary users (PUs) following the principle of two-way
relaying. In return, it gets access to the spectrum of the PUs to enable its
own transmission to SU-receiver (SU-Rx). Further, in order to support
sustainable operation of the network, SU-Tx is assumed to harvest energy from
the RF signals received from the PUs, using the technique of simultaneous
wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). Assuming a decode-and-forward
behaviour and power-splitting based relaying protocol at SU-Tx, closed form
expressions for outage probability of PU and SU are obtained. Simulation
results validate our analytical results and illustrate spectrum-efficiency and
energy-efficiency advantages of the proposed system over one-way relaying.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Vehicular
