    #identity: Hashtagging Race, Gender, Sexuality, and Nation

    "Since its launch in 2006, Twitter has served as a major platform for political performance, social justice activism, and large-scale public debates over race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and nationality. It has empowered minoritarian groups to organize protests, articulate often-underrepresented perspectives, and form community. It has also spread hashtags that have been used to bully and silence women, people of color, and LGBTQ people. #identity is among the first scholarly books to address the positive and negative effects of Twitter on our contemporary world. Hailing from diverse scholarly fields, all contributors are affiliated with The Color of New Media, a scholarly collective based at the University of California, Berkeley. The Color of New Media explores the intersections of new media studies, critical race theory, gender and women’s studies, and postcolonial studies. The essays in #identity consider topics such as the social justice movements organized through #BlackLivesMatter, #Ferguson, and #SayHerName; the controversies around #WhyIStayed and #CancelColbert; Twitter use in India and Africa; the integration of hashtags such as #nohomo and #onfleek that have become part of everyday online vernacular; and other ways in which Twitter has been used by, for, and against women, people of color, LGBTQ, and Global South communities. Collectively, the essays in this volume offer a critically interdisciplinary view of how and why social media has been at the heart of US and global political discourse for over a decade.

    Supporting lay users in privacy decisions when sharing sensitive data

    The first part of the thesis focuses on assisting users in choosing their privacy settings, by using machine learning to derive the optimal set of privacy settings for the user. In contrast to other work, our approach uses context factors as well as individual factors to provide a personalized set of privacy settings. The second part consists of a set of intelligent user interfaces to assist the users throughout the complete privacy journey, from defining friend groups that allow targeted information sharing; through user interfaces for selecting information recipients, to find possible errors or unusual settings, and to refine them; up to mechanisms to gather in-situ feedback on privacy incidents, and investigating how to use these to improve a user’s privacy in the future. Our studies have shown that including tailoring the privacy settings significantly increases the correctness of the predicted privacy settings; whereas the user interfaces have been shown to significantly decrease the amount of unwanted disclosures.Insbesondere nach den jüngsten Datenschutzskandalen in sozialen Netzwerken wird der Datenschutz für Benutzer immer wichtiger. Obwohl die meisten Benutzer behaupten Wert auf Datenschutz zu legen, verhalten sie sich online allerdings völlig anders: Sie lassen die meisten Datenschutzeinstellungen der online genutzten Dienste, wie z. B. von sozialen Netzwerken oder Diensten zur Standortfreigabe, unberührt und passen sie nicht an ihre Datenschutzanforderungen an. In dieser Arbeit werde ich einen Ansatz zur Lösung dieses Problems vorstellen, der auf zwei verschiedenen Säulen basiert. Der erste Teil konzentriert sich darauf, Benutzer bei der Auswahl ihrer Datenschutzeinstellungen zu unterstützen, indem maschinelles Lernen verwendet wird, um die optimalen Datenschutzeinstellungen für den Benutzer abzuleiten. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Arbeiten verwendet unser Ansatz Kontextfaktoren sowie individuelle Faktoren, um personalisierte Datenschutzeinstellungen zu generieren. Der zweite Teil besteht aus einer Reihe intelligenter Benutzeroberflächen, die die Benutzer in verschiedene Datenschutzszenarien unterstützen. Dies beginnt bei einer Oberfläche zur Definition von Freundesgruppen, die im Anschluss genutzt werden können um einen gezielten Informationsaustausch zu ermöglichen, bspw. in sozialen Netzwerken; über Benutzeroberflächen um die Empfänger von privaten Daten auszuwählen oder mögliche Fehler oder ungewöhnliche Datenschutzeinstellungen zu finden und zu verfeinern; bis hin zu Mechanismen, um In-Situ- Feedback zu Datenschutzverletzungen zum Zeitpunkt ihrer Entstehung zu sammeln und zu untersuchen, wie diese verwendet werden können, um die Privatsphäreeinstellungen eines Benutzers anzupassen.     Food Edu-Care in the Primary Curriculum: A collaborative case study in an inner city DEIS Gaelscoil

    This applied case study explored the role of food education and its potential to nurture the lives of children who may experience disadvantage socially, culturally and economically. The research concedes at the outset that the role of ‘food’ in education is complex, that schools do not deal with curriculum matters alone but also with social justice policy issues, and that school-based ‘food poverty’ policy interventions to date are broadly motivated by nutritional concerns. The research was informed by a critical pedagogy perspective using a collaborative enquiry design focused on individual and collective agency at the school level. Multiple theoretical and analytical frameworks related to constructivist learning methodologies, educational psychology, and critical social theory framed the study. The research intervention in the inner-city DEIS Gaelscoil was at the invitation of the Parents’ Council and staff who collectively identified an urgent need for healthier eating practices and a shift to cross-curricular pedagogical practices to meet educational targets in literacy and numeracy. An Integrated Food Edu-Care curriculum module was collaboratively developed and delivered in Irish through weekly class sessions and field-trips. The integrated Food Edu-Care curriculum module consisted of; sixteen food and cooking lessons, a collaborative Hot Lunch Experience (Pedagogic Meal) and the creation of a ‘Foodbook’ as a class project. The curricular areas included in the integrated Food Edu-Care curriculum module included, Mathematics, Language, Social, Environmental and Scientific Education (SESE), Social Personal and Health Education (SPHE) and Visual Arts. The outputs from the research include an Integrated Food Edu-Care Pedagogical Guide for teachers and Pupils’ Activity Workbook, an ‘e-Foodbook’, educational videos, flashcards and posters in both English and Irish. The findings indicate that using a collaborative, experiential, caring, active and integrated Food Edu-Care curriculum module has the capacity to reach all learners and to build on classroom relationships, thereby facilitating social and emotional learning particularly in the area of self-efficacy and social skills. The research confirmed that such a curriculum module can incorporate seamless compensation for missed life chances and for on-going disadvantage. The thesis recommends a fifth domain of emotional and self-efficacy development needs among primary school children which is better facilitated by systemic policy change to school food provision and integrated curriculum with target-free pedagogies than by narrowly focused, targeted initiatives for free school lunches

    Cultural identity and personal involvement of community interpreters

    The current study is based on 30 in-depth interviews with Russian professional interpreters. It addresses three broad questions: cultural identity, invisibility / involvement, and the relationship between the two. In doing so, it attempts to connect the literature in intercultural communication and in translation / interpreting studies and provide a foundation for interdisciplinary dialogue.It was expected that cultural identity could be based on a single speech community, several communities, or on a transcendence of / denial by speech communities. The majority of respondents talked about an identity centered on their own culture. This is most likely the consequence of the monolingual / monocultural Russian society that although welcoming foreignness, usually reinterprets in its own terms.Invisibility and involvement are about the perception of the interpreter's role as active or passive and the enactment of that role. Most interviewees saw invisibility as an ideal that is theoretically desirable but practically unattainable. They preferred to adjust the level of their involvement spontaneously based on the severity of the situation, rather than blindly follow a set standard.It was expected that cultural identity will have an influence on the amount and the kind of the involvement performed by the interpreter. This expectation was not met, for several reasons. First, only one variation of cultural identity was present in the sample (an identity based on one community). Second, all the interviewees worked with English, a language of international communication where the cultural component was diluted and hence had little influence on the interpreters' identity. Third and most important of all, the interviewees showed a remarkable ability to separate their personal and professional lives (backstage and frontstage in Goffman's terms) and by doing so break the link between identity and action

    The processing of conflict in organizational groups: A case study in a Greek industrial company.

    The purpose of the research was to investigate the way in which employees in two departments of a Greek industrial company resolved conflict situations encountered in the context of their department. The premises are that (a) the positive effects of conflict for the organization are related to the way in which it is resolved; (b) the investigation of the phenomenon of conflict resolution necessitates the examination of employees' conflict handling behaviour during a conflict episode, as well as of their representation of the particular episode; (c) the bureaucratic culture of the organization and the wider social culture determine the conditions within which employees represent and deal with conflict situations. The research used a single case design to develop new ways to model the conflict resolution process. The use of open-ended interviews constituted the methods of data collection. Employees from two departments (Research/Design and Supplies) of the organization were selected. The analysis of data in the first part of the thesis led to the development of a net model, indicating patterns of conflict handling behaviour during any conflict episode; the generic structure of the net model, which was found to be common to both departments, was discussed in the light of Greek culture, as well as of the bureaucratic practices of that particular organization. On the basis of this analysis, a further analysis was made of the data relating to those nodes of the net model where employees were found to be involved in a decision making process. The methodology selected enabled the representation of the process of the conflict management problem by organizational members. The basic assumption incorporated within this methodology is that the conflict management problem can be represented in more than one way. The identification, via employees' discourse, of the way in which conflict situations are conceptualized in the context of the two departments, indicated how this representation relates to the wider social and organizational nexus within which it is embedded. The contribution of this study lies in identifying the conflict resolution structures and processes within two departments of the organization studied and, to a certain extent, the wider organization, while offering an insight into how this organization shapes the way in which conflict situations are processed by organizational members, using their own discourse
