Agent Based Simulation for a Sustainable Society and Multi-Agent Smart Computing: international workshops, PRIMA 2011, Wollongong, Australia, November 14, 2011: revised selected papers

This volume contains selected and revised versions of papers that were presented at two of the workshops held at the 14th International Conference on Principles and Practice of Multi-Agent Systems (PRIMA 2011) on November 14, 2011, in Wollongong, Australia. PRIMA is one of the oldest active agent computing forums, beginning in 1998 as a regional agent workshop (the Pacific Rim International Workshop on Multi-Agents). Alongside the main conference, PRIMA includes workshops that are intended to facilitate active exchange, interaction and comparison of approaches, methods and various ideas in specific areas related to intelligent agent systems and multiagent systems. In alignment with the conference theme for PRIMA 2011 of "Agents for Sustainability," the 2011 workshop program sought to encourage thought leadership in the agent community as to how agent computing can be applied to enhance sustainable practices in our world, from agriculture and personal resource usage to the design and operation of more sustainable cities.\ud \u

Demand Response in Smart Grids

The Special Issue “Demand Response in Smart Grids” includes 11 papers on a variety of topics. The success of this Special Issue demonstrates the relevance of demand response programs and events in the operation of power and energy systems at both the distribution level and at the wide power system level. Proceedings of the 3rd international symposium for engineering education ISEE2010: Educating engineers for a changing world - leading transformation from an unsustainable global society

The twenty first century and beyond will present human society with a set of unprecedented challenges emanating from the unsustainable nature of the current societal model. Clearly society must find a transformative model to a sustainable future, and fast. Engineers, with their technical know-how and systems approach to problem solving, are well placed to lead this necessarily multidisciplinary and collaborative endeavour. However, engineering education must provide twenty first century engineers with the necessary tools to undertake the massive challenges ahead. The 3rd International Symposium of Engineering Education took place at University College Cork on 30th June - 2nd July 2010. This significant international conference explored a number of key issues pertaining to engineering education in the twenty first century.
