    What does not happen: quantifying embodied engagement using NIMI and self-adaptors

    Previous research into the quantification of embodied intellectual and emotional engagement using non-verbal movement parameters has not yielded consistent results across different studies. Our research introduces NIMI (Non-Instrumental Movement Inhibition) as an alternative parameter. We propose that the absence of certain types of possible movements can be a more holistic proxy for cognitive engagement with media (in seated persons) than searching for the presence of other movements. Rather than analyzing total movement as an indicator of engagement, our research team distinguishes between instrumental movements (i.e. physical movement serving a direct purpose in the given situation) and non-instrumental movements, and investigates them in the context of the narrative rhythm of the stimulus. We demonstrate that NIMI occurs by showing viewers’ movement levels entrained (i.e. synchronised) to the repeating narrative rhythm of a timed computer-presented quiz. Finally, we discuss the role of objective metrics of engagement in future context-aware analysis of human behaviour in audience research, interactive media and responsive system and interface design

    The concept underlying the Engineering Data Compendium was the product of a research and development program (Integrated Perceptual Information for Designers project) aimed at facilitating the application of basic research findings in human performance to the design and military crew systems. The principal objective was to develop a workable strategy for: (1) identifying and distilling information of potential value to system design from the existing research literature, and (2) presenting this technical information in a way that would aid its accessibility, interpretability, and applicability by systems designers. The present four volumes of the Engineering Data Compendium represent the first implementation of this strategy. This is the first volume, the User's Guide, containing a description of the program and instructions for its use

    User-Centered Visual Design of Alarms in Manufacturing Dashboards: Insights on Comprehensibility and Preferences

    The digitization of the manufacturing domain results in an enormous amount of available data decision-makers are continuously exposed to. Consequently, critical alarm information must be easily comprehensible and suit decision-makers’ preferences to facilitate timely reactions and thus prevent harm to production processes and employees. However, despite its importance, academia and practice show little consensus regarding alarm design in manufacturing dashboards. Against this background, the purpose of our study is twofold. First, we identified 5 factors for visual alarm design with overall 12 design options in a structured literature review. Second, we investigated the effect these design options have on users’ comprehension and preferences in a conjoint study and a best-worst scaling approach with 98 participants with experience working in manufacturing. Our results show that alarm description and their visual integration are the most important factors for alarm design. In this regard, a cluster analysis reveals more nuanced and more stable preferences in more experienced users. Further, we find that color-coding-based content classification entails best performance in recognizing alarms. We contribute to academia and practice by providing actionable insights that may support improving alarm design in manufacturing

    USING PRAISE TO INCREASE VISUAL ATTENDING IN AN ASYNCHRONOUS ONLINE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT: AN EYE TRACKING STUDY

    With the emergence of online courses in the mid-1990s, the number of students enrolled in online courses has been growing at an exponential rate (Schwirzke, Vashaw, & Watson, 2018). This trend brings with it new problems, such as familiarity with evidence-supported behavioral techniques that will maintain student engagement and improve likelihood of academic success in online learning environments. The purpose of the present study was to examine how the use of praise may affect visual engagement with video lectures with the assistance of commercially available eye tracking technology. A secondary objective of the study was to identify how praise affects performance on post-lecture knowledge assessments of information delivered through online videos. Results indicated that three out of four undergraduate participants were visually engaged with the video lecture more when provided praise than in the absence of praise, while the fourth participant showed ceiling effects. Results also indicated that praise did not have a significant effect on post-lecture knowledge assessment accuracy. These results indicate that praise may have utility in improving visual engagement in online learning environments and that inexpensive eye tracking technology may be useful for measuring visual engagement in these environments
