3G migration in Pakistan
The telecommunication industry in Pakistan has come a long way since the country\u27s independence in 1947. The initial era could be fairly termed as the PTCL (Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited) monopoly, for it was the sole provider of all telecommunication services across the country. It was not until four decades later that the region embarked into the new world of wireless communication, hence ending the decades old PTCL monopoly. By the end of the late 1990\u27s, government support and international investment in the region opened new doors to innovation and better quality, low cost, healthy competition. Wireless licenses for the private sector in the telecommunication industry triggered a promising chain of events that resulted in a drastic change in the telecommunication infrastructure and service profile. The newly introduced wireless (GSM) technology received enormous support from all stakeholders (consumers, regulatory body, and market) and caused a vital boost in Pakistan\u27s economy. Numerous tangential elements had triggered this vital move in the history of telecommunications in Pakistan. Entrepreneurs intended to test the idea of global joint ventures in the East and hence the idea of international business became a reality. The technology had proven to be a great success in the West, while Pakistan\u27s telecom consumer had lived under the shadow of PTCL dominance for decades and needed more flexibility. At last the world was moving from wired to wireless! Analysts termed this move as the beginning of a new era. The investors, telecommunication businesses, and Pakistani treasury prospered. It was a win-win situation for all involved. The learning curve was steep for both operators and consumers but certainly improved over time. In essence, the principle of deploying the right technology in the right market at the right time led to this remarkable success. The industry today stands on the brink of a similar crossroads via transition from second generation to something beyond. With the partial success of 3G in Europe and the USA, the government has announced the release of three 3G licenses by mid 2009. This decision is not yet fully supported by all but still initiated parallel efforts by the operators and the vendors to integrate this next move into their existing infrastructure

Performance analysis and deployment of VoLTE mechanisms over 3GPP LTE-based networks
Long Term Evolution based networks lack native support for Circuit Switched (CS) services. The Evolved Packet System (EPS) which includes the Evolved UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) and Evolved Packet Core (EPC) is a purely all-IP packet system. This introduces the problem of how to provide voice call support when a user is within an LTE network and how to ensure voice service continuity when the user moves out of LTE coverage area. Different technologies have been proposed for the purpose of providing a voice to LTE users and to ensure the service continues outside LTE networks. The aim of this paper is to analyze and evaluate the overall performance of these technologies along with Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (SRVCC) Inter-RAT handover to Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Networks/ GSM-EDGE radio access Networks (UTRAN/GERAN). The possible solutions for providing voice call and service continuity over LTE-based networks are Circuit Switched Fall Back (CSFB), Voice over LTE via Generic Access (VoLGA), Voice over LTE (VoLTE) based on IMS/MMTel with SRVCC and Over The Top (OTT) services like Skype. This paper focuses mainly on the 3GPP standard solutions to implement voice over LTE. The paper compares various aspects of these solutions and suggests a possible roadmap that mobile operators can adopt to provide seamless voice over LTE
A novel downlink semi-persistent packet scheduling scheme for VoLTE traffic over heterogeneous wireless networks
Long Term Evolution (LTE) is becoming the first choice of Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) when constructing a wireless network infrastructure because of its high data rate, high throughput and low latency. These significant advancements are necessary for satisfying the delivery of a wide-range of mobile applications and managed network resources. However, deploying a new LTE network or a transition from current legacy cellular networks to LTE can take several years to roll out. In the meantime, working in a heterogeneous wireless communications network looks inevitable. This paper investigates Voice over LTE (VoLTE) Quality of Service (QoS) under a heterogeneous wireless communication scenario. The contributions of this paper are twofold. First, a novel Downlink (DL) semi-persistent scheduling scheme is proposed to reduce VoLTE end-to-end delay and increase system capacity. Second, an extensive network simulation model has been designed and implemented to evaluate the proposed scheme. The performance of the proposed scheme is compared with the performance of two relevant and well-known DL packet scheduling methods. The simulation results confirm that the proposed scheme is able to reduce VoLTE end-to-end delay and achieve a better system capacity than current methods, and maintain the desired VoLTE QoS
Modelling and Optimisation of GSM and UMTS Radio Access Networks
The size and complexity of mobile communication networks have increased in the last years making network management a very complicated task. GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) systems are in a mature state now. Thus, non-optimal performance does not come from typical network start-up problems, but, more likely, from the mismatching between traffic, network or propagation models used for network planning, and their real counterparts. Such differences cause network congestion problems both in signalling and data channels. With the aim of maximising the financial benefits on their mature networks, operators do not solve anymore congestion problems by adding new radio resources, as they usually did. Alternatively, two main strategies can be adopted, a) a better assignment of radio resources through a re-planning approach, and/or b) the automatic configuration (optimisation, in a wide sense) of network parameters. Both techniques aim to adapt the network to the actual traffic and propagation conditions. Moreover, a new heterogenous scenario, where several services and Radio Access Technologies (RATs) coexist in the same area, is now common, causing new unbalanced traffic scenarios and congestion problems. In this thesis, several optimisation and modelling methods are proposed to solve congestion problems in data and signalling channels for single- and multi-RAT scenarios

Real-time HSPA emulator for end-to-edge QoS evaluation in all-IP beyond 3G heterogeneous wireless networks
This paper is aimed at presenting the real-time High Speed
Packet Access (HSPA) emulator that has been developed in
the framework of the AROMA project. Real-time emula-
tors allow reproducing realistic scenarios to test algorithms,
strategies, protocols and applications under realistic condi-
tions. Therefore, real-time emulators constitute a powerful
tool to evaluate the end-user's Quality of Experience (QoE),
which could not be achieved by means of o -line simulations.
The presented emulator is integrated in the AROMA real-
time testbed, which has been developed to provide a frame-
work for demonstrating the bene ts of the common radio re-
source management algorithms as well as the proposed end-
to-edge Quality of Service (QoS) management techniques
developed for all-IP beyond 3G heterogeneous wireless net-
works in the context of the AROMA project. This paper
presents a qualitative description of the developed tool, em-
phasizing some interesting implementation details that may
result helpful in the development of similar emulation plat-
forms. Some illustrative results, showing the capabilities of
the developed tool, are also presented and analyzed.Postprint (published version
LTE Advanced: Technology and Performance Analysis
Wireless data usage is increasing at a phenomenal rate and driving the need for continued innovations in wireless data technologies to provide more capacity and higher quality of service. In October 2009, 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) submitted LTE-Advanced to the ITU as a proposed candidate IMT-Advanced technology for which specifications could become available in 2011 through Release-10 . The aim of âLTE-Advancedâ is to further enhance LTE radio access in terms of system performance and capabilities compared to current cellular systems, including the first release of LTE, with a specific goal to ensure that LTE fulfills and even surpass the requirements of âIMT-Advancedâ as defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R) .
This thesis offers an introduction to the mobile communication standard known as LTE Advanced, depicting the evolution of the standard from its roots and discussing several important technologies that help it evolve to accomplishing the IMT-Advanced requirements. A short history of the LTE standard is offered, along with a discussion of its standards and performance. LTE-Advanced details include analysis on the physical layer by investigating the performance of SC-FDMA and OFDMA of LTE physical layer. The investigation is done by considering different modulation schemes (QPSK, 16QAM and 64QAM) on the basis of PAPR, BER, power spectral density (PSD) and error probability by simulating the model of SC-FDMA & OFDMA. To evaluate the performance in presence of noise, an Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel was introduced.
A set of conclusions is derived from our results describing the effect of higher order modulation schemes on BER and error probability for both OFDMA and SC-FDMA.
