    Incommensurability and rationality in engineering design: the case of functional decomposition

    In engineering design research different models of functional decomposition are advanced side-by-side. In this paper I explain and validate this co-existence of models in terms of the Kuhnian thesis of methodological incommensurability. I advance this analysis in terms of the thesis’ construal of (non-algorithmic) theory choice in terms of values, expanding this notion to the engineering domain. I further argue that the (by some) implicated threat of the thesis to rational theory choice has no force in the functional decomposition case: co-existence of different models of functional decomposition is rational from an instrumental point of view. My explanation covers cases in which different models are advanced as means for the same objective. Such cases cannot be explicated with the explanatory construct of variety in objectives, as advanced in other analyses of co-existing conceptualizations in engineering

    Work domain analysis and intelligent transport systems: Implications for vehicle design

    This article presents a Work Domain Analysis (WDA) of the road transport system in Victoria, Australia. A series of driver information requirements and tasks that could potentially be supported through the use of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) are then extracted from the WDA. The potential use of ITS technologies to circumvent these information gaps and provide additional support to drivers is discussed. It is concluded that driver information requirements are currently not entirely satisfied by contemporary vehicle design and also that there are a number of driving tasks that could be further supported through the provision of supplementary systems within vehicles

    The cross-metathesis of terminal olefins using a novel ruthenium catalyst results in excellent selectivity for the Z-olefin homodimer. The reaction was found to tolerate a large number of functional groups, solvents, and temperatures while maintaining excellent Z-selectivity, even at high reaction conversions

    Function allocation theory for creative design

    Function structure influences on systems architecture (or product architecture). This paper discusses a design method for creative design solutions that focuses on the allocation of functions. It first proposes a theory called “Function Allocation Theory” to allocate a function to an appropriate subsystem or component during the systems decomposition phase. By doing so, the complexity of design solutions can be reduced. The theory is applied to some examples including collaborative robots and robotics maintenance. Finally, the paper illustrates a case study of designing a reaction-free fastening system using this theory

    The unseen world: environmental microbial sequencing and identification methods for ecologists

    Archaea, bacteria, microeukaryotes, and the viruses that infect them (collectively “microorganisms”) are foundational components of all ecosystems, inhabiting almost every imaginable environment and comprising the majority of the planet’s organismal and evolutionary diversity. Microorganisms play integral roles in ecosystem functioning; are important in the biogeochemical cycling of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), sulfur (S), phosphorus (P), and various metals (eg Barnard et al. 2005); and may be vital to ecosystem responses to large-scale climatic change (Mackelprang et al. 2011). Rarely found alone, microorganisms often form complex communities that are dynamic in space and time (Martiny et al. 2006). For these and other reasons, ecologists and environmental scientists have become increasingly interested in understanding microbial dynamics in ecosystems. Ecological studies of microbes in the environment generally focus on determining which organisms are present and what functional roles they are playing or could play. Rapid advances in molecular and bioinformatic approaches over the past decade have dramatically reduced the difficulty and cost of addressing such questions (Figure 1; WebTable 1). Yet the range of methodologies currently in use and the rapid pace of their ongoing development can be daunting for researchers unaccustomed to these technologies

    Safety-related challenges and opportunities for GPUs in the automotive domain

    GPUs have been shown to cover the computing performance needs of autonomous driving (AD) systems. However, since the GPUs used for AD build on designs for the mainstream market, they may lack fundamental properties for correct operation under automotive's safety regulations.
