    Img2Logo:Generating Golden Ratio Logos from Images

    Logos are one of the most important graphic design forms that use an abstracted shape to clearly represent the spirit of a community. Among various styles of abstraction, a particular golden-ratio design is frequently employed by designers to create a concise and regular logo. In this context, designers utilize a set of circular arcs with golden ratios (i.e., all arcs are taken from circles whose radii form a geometric series based on the golden ratio) as the design elements to manually approximate a target shape. This error-prone process requires a large amount of time and effort, posing a significant challenge for design space exploration. In this work, we present a novel computational framework that can automatically generate golden ratio logo abstractions from an input image. Our framework is based on a set of carefully identified design principles and a constrained optimization formulation respecting these principles. We also propose a progressive approach that can efficiently solve the optimization problem, resulting in a sequence of abstractions that approximate the input at decreasing levels of detail. We evaluate our work by testing on images with different formats including real photos, clip arts, and line drawings. We also extensively validate the key components and compare our results with manual results by designers to demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework. Moreover, our framework can largely benefit design space exploration via easy specification of design parameters such as abstraction levels, golden circle sizes, etc

    Line tracking algorithm for scribbled drawings

    This paper describes a line tracking algorithm that may be used to extract lines from paper based scribbles. The proposed algorithm improves the performance of existing sparse-pixel line tracking techniques that are used in vectorization by introducing perceptual saliency and Kalman filtering concepts to the line tracking. Furthermore, an adaptive sampling size is used such that it is possible to adjust the size of the tracking step to reflect the stroke curvature.peer-reviewe

    Ten Years of Research in the Analysis of Graphics Documents: Achievements and Open Problems

    Colloque sur invitation.Our research group has been investigating various aspects of graphics recognition techniques for more than ten years. We have worked on map analysis, symbol recognition, dimension analysis and the conversion of engineering drawings to CAD models. Lately, we are also conducting research on the interpretation of architectural drawings. In addition, we have built up a software platform of generic tool for graphics document image analysis, and we have participated in many international activities around the topic of graphics recognition. In this paper, we present some of our achievements and results from these ten years, and we propose a number of open problems, which we think are good challenges in the coming years, for ourselves and for other teams

    Paper-based scribble simplification : where do we stand?

    This research is funded by the University of Malta under theresearch grant IED 73-529 and is part of the project Innovative ‘Early Design’ Product Prototyping (InPro).This paper presents a formal evaluation of the paper-based scribble simplification algorithm described in [BCFB07] and [BCFB08]. A comparative analysis of different aspects of the algorithm with other algorithms described in the literature such as Sparse Pixel Vectorization, spatial moving average filtering and Principal Component Analysis is performed, hence establishing the qualities of this paper-based scribble simplification algorithm. To quantify the performance of the algorithm, performance measures established in the literature, such as the Pixel Recovery Index are used when suitable. However, since there exists no quantitative measure which measures scribble simplification, this paper proposes a new methodology with which scribble simplification may be quantitatively assessed. Through the evaluation described in this paper, we will be able to determine remaining difficulties in the interpretation of paper-based scribbles and hence identify future research areas.peer-reviewe

    Features and design intent in engineering sketches

    We investigate the problem of determining design intent from engineering sketches: what did the designer have in mind when sketching a component? Specifically, we consider the unidirectional reverse mapping from form features, as determined from an input sketch, to design features, representing the design intent present in the designer’s mind. We introduce a list of com- mon engineering form features. For each, we list which geometrical cues may be helpful in identifying these features in design sketches, and we list the design features which such form features commonly imply. We show that a reductionist approach which decomposes a diagram into form features can be used to deduce the design intent of the object portrayed in a drawing. We supply experimental results in support of this idea

    Adaptive image vectorisation and brushing using mesh colours

    We propose the use of curved triangles and mesh colours as a vector primitive for image vectorisation. We show that our representation has clear benefits for rendering performance, texture detail, as well as further editing of the resulting vector images. The proposed method focuses on efficiency, but it still leads to results that compare favourably with those from previous work. We show results over a variety of input images ranging from photos, drawings, paintings, all the way to designs and cartoons. We implemented several editing workflows facilitated by our representation: interactive user-guided vectorisation, and novel raster-style feature-aware brushing capabilities
