    Fault Diagnosis and Fault-Tolerant Control of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    With the increasing demand for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in both military and civilian applications, critical safety issues need to be specially considered in order to make better and wider use of them. UAVs are usually employed to work in hazardous and complex environments, which may seriously threaten the safety and reliability of UAVs. Therefore, the safety and reliability of UAVs are becoming imperative for development of advanced intelligent control systems. The key challenge now is the lack of fully autonomous and reliable control techniques in face of different operation conditions and sophisticated environments. Further development of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) control systems is required to be reliable in the presence of system component faults and to be insensitive to model uncertainties and external environmental disturbances. This thesis research aims to design and develop novel control schemes for UAVs with consideration of all the factors that may threaten their safety and reliability. A novel adaptive sliding mode control (SMC) strategy is proposed to accommodate model uncertainties and actuator faults for an unmanned quadrotor helicopter. Compared with the existing adaptive SMC strategies in the literature, the proposed adaptive scheme can tolerate larger actuator faults without stimulating control chattering due to the use of adaptation parameters in both continuous and discontinuous control parts. Furthermore, a fuzzy logic-based boundary layer and a nonlinear disturbance observer are synthesized to further improve the capability of the designed control scheme for tolerating model uncertainties, actuator faults, and unknown external disturbances while preventing overestimation of the adaptive control parameters and suppressing the control chattering effect. Then, a cost-effective fault estimation scheme with a parallel bank of recurrent neural networks (RNNs) is proposed to accurately estimate actuator fault magnitude and an active fault-tolerant control (FTC) framework is established for a closed-loop quadrotor helicopter system. Finally, a reconfigurable control allocation approach is combined with adaptive SMC to achieve the capability of tolerating complete actuator failures with application to a modified octorotor helicopter. The significance of this proposed control scheme is that the stability of the closed-loop system is theoretically guaranteed in the presence of both single and simultaneous actuator faults

    Adaptive trajectory tracking control for quadrotors with disturbances by using generalized regression neural networks

    In this document, the development and experimental validation of a nonlinear controller with an adaptive disturbance compensation system applied on a quadrotor are presented. The introduced scheme relies on a generalized regression neural network (GRNN). The proposed scheme has a structure consisting of an inner control loop inaccessible to the user (i.e., an embedded controller) and an outer control loop which generates commands for the inner control loop. The adaptive GRNN is applied in the outer control loop. The proposed approach lies in the aptitude of the GRNN to estimate the disturbances and unmodeled dynamic effects without requiring accurate knowledge of the quadrotor parameters. The adaptation laws are deduced from a rigorous convergence analysis ensuring asymptotic trajectory tracking. The proposed control scheme is implemented on the QBall 2 quadrotor. Comparisons with respect to a PD-based control, an adaptive model regressor-based scheme, and an adaptive neural-network controller are carried out. The experimental results validate the functionality of the novel control scheme and show a performance improvement since smaller tracking error values are produced.Fil: Lopez Sanchez, Ivan. The aim of this paper is to find and elaborate on the current trends in the swarm robotic system, leader-follower, and multi-agent system. Another part of this review will focus on finding the trend of controller utilized by previous researchers in the leader-follower system. The controller that is commonly applied by the researchers is mostly adaptive and non-linear controllers. The paper also explores the subject of study or system used during the research which normally employs multi-robot, multi-agent, space flying, reconfigurable system, multi-legs system or unmanned system. Another aspect of this paper concentrates on the topology employed by the researchers when they conducted simulation or experimental studies

    Backpropagating constraints-based trajectory tracking control of a quadrotor with constrained actuator dynamics and complex unknowns

    In this paper, a backpropagating constraints-based trajectory tracking control (BCTTC) scheme is addressed for trajectory tracking of a quadrotor with complex unknowns and cascade constraints arising from constrained actuator dynamics, including saturations and dead zones. The entire quadrotor system including actuator dynamics is decomposed into five cascade subsystems connected by intermediate saturated nonlinearities. By virtue of the cascade structure, backpropagating constraints (BCs) on intermediate signals are derived from constrained actuator dynamics suffering from nonreversible rotations and nonnegative squares of rotors, and decouple subsystems with saturated connections. Combining with sliding-mode errors, BC-based virtual controls are individually designed by addressing underactuation and cascade constraints. In order to remove smoothness requirements on intermediate controls, first-order filters are employed, and thereby contributing to backstepping-like subcontrollers synthesizing in a recursive manner. Moreover, universal adaptive compensators are exclusively devised to dominate intermediate tracking residuals and complex unknowns. Eventually, the closed-loop BCTTC system stability can be ensured by the Lyapunov synthesis, and trajectory tracking errors can be made arbitrarily small. Simulation studies demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed BCTTC scheme for a quadrotor with complex constrains and unknowns

    UAV Model-based Flight Control with Artificial Neural Networks: A Survey

    Model-Based Control (MBC) techniques have dominated flight controller designs for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Despite their success, MBC-based designs rely heavily on the accuracy of the mathematical model of the real plant and they suffer from the explosion of complexity problem. These two challenges may be mitigated by Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) that have been widely studied due to their unique features and advantages in system identification and controller design. Viewed from this perspective, this survey provides a comprehensive literature review on combined MBC-ANN techniques that are suitable for UAV flight control, i.e., low-level control. The objective is to pave the way and establish a foundation for efficient controller designs with performance guarantees. A reference template is used throughout the survey as a common basis for comparative studies to fairly determine capabilities and limitations of existing research. The end-result offers supported information for advantages, disadvantages and applicability of a family of relevant controllers to UAV prototypes

    Optimal Control and Adaptive Learning for Stabilization of a Quadrotor-type Unmanned Aerial Vehicle via Approximate Dynamic Programming

    The development of an optimal controller for stabilization of a quadrotor system using an adaptive critic structure based on policy iteration schemes is proposed in this paper. This approach is inserted in the context of Approximate Dynamic Programming and it is used to solve optimal decision problems on-line, without requiring complete knowledge of the system dynamics model to be controlled. The main feature of the adaptive critic design method that allows for on-line implementation is that it solves the Bellman optimality equation in a forward-in-time fashion, whereas traditional dynamic programming requires a backward-in-time procedure. This feedback control design technique is able to tune the controller parameters on-line in the presence of variations in plant dynamics and external disturbances using data measured along the system trajectories. Computational simulation results based on a quadrotor model demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme
