Semi-hierarchical based motion estimation algorithm for the dirac video encoder
Having fast and efficient motion estimation is crucial in today’s advance video compression
technique since it determines the compression efficiency and the complexity of a video encoder. In this paper, a method which we call semi-hierarchical motion estimation is proposed for the Dirac video encoder. By considering the fully hierarchical motion estimation only for a certain type of inter frame encoding, complexity
of the motion estimation can be greatly reduced while maintaining the desirable accuracy. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm gives two to three times reduction in terms of the number of SAD calculation compared with existing motion estimation algorithm of Dirac for the same motion estimation
accuracy, compression efficiency and PSNR performance. Moreover, depending upon the complexity of the test sequence, the proposed algorithm has the ability to increase or decrease the search range in order to maintain the accuracy of the motion estimation to a certain level

Research and developments of Dirac video codec
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University.In digital video compression, apart from storage, successful transmission of the compressed video
data over the bandwidth limited erroneous channels is another important issue. To enable a video
codec for broadcasting application, it is required to implement the corresponding coding tools (e.g.
error-resilient coding, rate control etc.). They are normally non-normative parts of a video codec and
hence their specifications are not defined in the standard. In Dirac as well, the original codec is
optimized for storage purpose only and so, several non-normative part of the encoding tools are still
required in order to be able to use in other types of application.
Being the "Research and Developments of the Dirac Video Codec" as the research title, phase I of
the project is mainly focused on the error-resilient transmission over a noisy channel. The error-resilient
coding method used here is a simple and low complex coding scheme which provides the
error-resilient transmission of the compressed video bitstream of Dirac video encoder over the packet
erasure wired network. The scheme combines source and channel coding approach where error-resilient
source coding is achieved by data partitioning in the wavelet transformed domain and
channel coding is achieved through the application of either Rate-Compatible Punctured
Convolutional (RCPC) Code or Turbo Code (TC) using un-equal error protection between header plus
MV and data. The scheme is designed mainly for the packet-erasure channel, i.e. targeted for the
Internet broadcasting application.
But, for a bandwidth limited channel, it is still required to limit the amount of bits generated from
the encoder depending on the available bandwidth in addition to the error-resilient coding. So, in the
2nd phase of the project, a rate control algorithm is presented. The algorithm is based upon the Quality
Factor (QF) optimization method where QF of the encoded video is adaptively changing in order to
achieve average bitrate which is constant over each Group of Picture (GOP). A relation between the
bitrate, R and the QF, which is called Rate-QF (R-QF) model is derived in order to estimate the
optimum QF of the current encoding frame for a given target bitrate, R.
In some applications like video conferencing, real-time encoding and decoding with minimum
delay is crucial, but, the ability to do real-time encoding/decoding is largely determined by the
complexity of the encoder/decoder. As we all know that motion estimation process inside the encoder
is the most time consuming stage. So, reducing the complexity of the motion estimation stage will
certainly give one step closer to the real-time application. So, as a partial contribution toward realtime
application, in the final phase of the research, a fast Motion Estimation (ME) strategy is designed
and implemented. It is the combination of modified adaptive search plus semi-hierarchical way of
motion estimation. The same strategy was implemented in both Dirac and H.264 in order to
investigate its performance on different codecs. Together with this fast ME strategy, a method which
is called partial cost function calculation in order to further reduce down the computational load of the
cost function calculation was presented. The calculation is based upon the pre-defined set of patterns
which were chosen in such a way that they have as much maximum coverage as possible over the
whole block.
In summary, this research work has contributed to the error-resilient transmission of compressed
bitstreams of Dirac video encoder over a bandwidth limited error prone channel. In addition to this,
the final phase of the research has partially contributed toward the real-time application of the Dirac
video codec by implementing a fast motion estimation strategy together with partial cost function

Psychological Engagement in Choice and Judgment Under Risk and Uncertainty
Theories of choice and judgment assume that agents behave rationally, choose the higher expected value option, and evaluate the choice consistently (Expected Utility Theory, Von Neumann, & Morgenstern, 1947). However, researchers in decision-making showed that human behaviour is different in choice and judgement tasks (Slovic & Lichtenstein, 1968; 1971; 1973). In this research, we propose that psychological engagement and control deprivation predict behavioural inconsistencies and utilitarian performance with judgment and choice. Moreover, we explore the influences of engagement and control deprivation on agent’s behaviours, while manipulating content of utility (Kusev et al., 2011, Hertwig & Gigerenzer 1999, Tversky & Khaneman, 1996) and
decision reward (Kusev et al, 2013, Shafir et al., 2002)

Living aloft: Human requirements for extended spaceflight
Human psychological and social adjustment to space is investigated. Studies and experiences bearing on human performance capability, psychological well being, and social organization, as they relate to space, were identified and assessed, and suggestions offered as to where further research could ease the Earth/space transition. Special emphasis was given to the variables of crew size, crew diversity, and mission duration, all of which can be expected to increase in future spaceflight. By providing a conceptual framework in which issues and related information can be integrated, the hope is to aid in discovering those conditions under which future space travelers can flourish
Developing a fengshui-based strategic decision-making model for Malaysia's property industry
In the property industry, stakes are high. The perfect condition of a reasonable time and information for stakeholders to get a sense of confidence to make well-guided decisions is unheard-of. To compound the problem, conscious and subconscious belief-based factors like Fengshui is pervasive in Malaysia's property industry. Although this phenomenon significantly impacts strategic decision (SD) making in the property industry, few mainstream academics would like to indulge too much in an esoteric subject like Fengshui. Whether we choose to ignore this phenomenon or not, Fengshui continues to impact local players and any global players operating or wishing to invest in Malaysia. This study aims to develop a model to address Fengshui-based SD making for Malaysia's property industry. Transcendental phenomenology was adopted to examine the Fengshui-based SD makers' experience without losing its lived, first-person character. Fourteen participants of Malaysia's captains of the property industry formed the purposive sample. The researcher has prior familiarity and prolonged engagement with the subject matter. Therefore, the Modified Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen method was employed, including pre-reflective descriptions from the participants and revelations from the researcher. Criteria of this method also require that the researcher's profile fits the purposive sample, and the research question under investigation is also his passion. Data were simultaneously collected via in-depth interviews, analysed and organised into themes until saturation. The final model informs the business leader if the business opponent he interacts with is an Aliever SD maker, Acquiescer SD maker, or a Believer SD maker. Understanding this enables business leaders to adapt to their environment and act according to the way (Wuwei in Daoist philosophy) the situation naturally encourages. Findings in this study reveal theoretical gaps to explore in pursuing Fengshui-related cognitive biases such as confirmation bias and authority bias. The proposed model will benefit multinational corporations by assisting them in better preparing for foreign assignments on this abstract yet impactful area of study in Malaysia's property industry
