    Target Detection Architecture for Resource Constrained Wireless Sensor Networks within Internet of Things

    Wireless sensor networks (WSN) within Internet of Things (IoT) have the potential to address the growing detection and classi�cation requirements among many surveillance applications. RF sensing techniques are the next generation technologies which o�er distinct advantages over traditional passive means of sensing such as acoustic and seismic which are used for surveillance and target detection applications of WSN. RF sensing based WSN within IoT detect the presence of designated targets by transmitting RF signals into the sensing environment and observing the re ected echoes. In this thesis, an RF sensing based target detection architecture for surveillance applications of WSN has been proposed to detect the presence of stationary targets within the sensing environment. With multiple sensing nodes operating simultaneously within the sensing region, diversity among the sensing nodes in the choice of transmit waveforms is required. Existing multiple access techniques to accommodate multiple sensing nodes within the sensing environment are not suitable for RF sensing based WSN. In this thesis, a diversity in the choice of the transmit waveforms has been proposed and transmit waveforms which are suitable for RF sensing based WSN have been discussed. A criterion have been de�ned to quantify the ease of detecting the signal and energy e�ciency of the signal based on which ease of detection index and energy e�ciency index respectively have been generated. The waveform selection criterion proposed in this thesis takes the WSN sensing conditions into account and identi�es the optimum transmit waveform within the available choices of transmit waveforms based on their respective ease of detection and energy e�ciency indexes. A target detector analyses the received RF signals to make a decision regarding the existence or absence of targets within the sensing region. Existing target detectors which are discussed in the context of WSN do not take the factors such as interference and nature of the sensing environment into account. Depending on the nature of the sensing environment, in this thesis the sensing environments are classi�ed as homogeneous and heterogeneous sensing environments. Within homogeneous sensing environments the presence of interference from the neighbouring sensing nodes is assumed. A target detector has been proposed for WSN within homogeneous sensing environments which can reliably detect the presence of targets. Within heterogeneous sensing environments the presence of clutter and interfering waveforms is assumed. A target detector has been proposed for WSN within heterogeneous sensing environments to detect targets in the presence of clutter and interfering waveforms. A clutter estimation technique has been proposed to assist the proposed target detector to achieve increased target detection reliability in the presence of clutter. A combination of compressive and two-step target detection architectures has been proposed to reduce the transmission costs. Finally, a 2-stage target detection architecture has been proposed to reduce the computational complexity of the proposed target detection architecture

    A Survey on Modelling of Automotive Radar Sensors for Virtual Test and Validation of Automated Driving

    Radar sensors were among the first perceptual sensors used for automated driving. Although several other technologies such as lidar, camera, and ultrasonic sensors are available, radar sensors have maintained and will continue to maintain their importance due to their reliability in adverse weather conditions. Virtual methods are being developed for verification and validation of automated driving functions to reduce the time and cost of testing. Due to the complexity of modelling high-frequency wave propagation and signal processing and perception algorithms, sensor models that seek a high degree of accuracy are challenging to simulate. Therefore, a variety of different modelling approaches have been presented in the last two decades. This paper comprehensively summarises the heterogeneous state of the art in radar sensor modelling. Instead of a technology-oriented classification as introduced in previous review articles, we present a classification of how these models can be used in vehicle development by using the V-model originating from software development. Sensor models are divided into operational, functional, technical, and individual models. The application and usability of these models along the development process are summarised in a comprehensive tabular overview, which is intended to support future research and development at the vehicle level and will be continuously updated

    Pre-Trained Driving in Localized Surroundings with Semantic Radar Information and Machine Learning

    Entlang der Signalverarbeitungskette von Radar Detektionen bis zur Fahrzeugansteuerung, diskutiert diese Arbeit eine semantischen Radar Segmentierung, einen darauf aufbauenden Radar SLAM, sowie eine im Verbund realisierte autonome Parkfunktion. Die Radarsegmentierung der (statischen) Umgebung wird durch ein Radar-spezifisches neuronales Netzwerk RadarNet erreicht. Diese Segmentierung ermöglicht die Entwicklung des semantischen Radar Graph-SLAM SERALOC. Auf der Grundlage der semantischen Radar SLAM Karte wird eine beispielhafte autonome Parkfunktionalität in einem realen Versuchsträger umgesetzt. Entlang eines aufgezeichneten Referenzfades parkt die Funktion ausschließlich auf Basis der Radar Wahrnehmung mit bisher unerreichter Positioniergenauigkeit. Im ersten Schritt wird ein Datensatz von 8.2 · 10^6 punktweise semantisch gelabelten Radarpunktwolken über eine Strecke von 2507.35m generiert. Es sind keine vergleichbaren Datensätze dieser Annotationsebene und Radarspezifikation öffentlich verfügbar. Das überwachte Training der semantischen Segmentierung RadarNet erreicht 28.97% mIoU auf sechs Klassen. Außerdem wird ein automatisiertes Radar-Labeling-Framework SeRaLF vorgestellt, welches das Radarlabeling multimodal mittels Referenzkameras und LiDAR unterstützt. Für die kohärente Kartierung wird ein Radarsignal-Vorfilter auf der Grundlage einer Aktivierungskarte entworfen, welcher Rauschen und andere dynamische Mehrwegreflektionen unterdrückt. Ein speziell für Radar angepasstes Graph-SLAM-Frontend mit Radar-Odometrie Kanten zwischen Teil-Karten und semantisch separater NDT Registrierung setzt die vorgefilterten semantischen Radarscans zu einer konsistenten metrischen Karte zusammen. Die Kartierungsgenauigkeit und die Datenassoziation werden somit erhöht und der erste semantische Radar Graph-SLAM für beliebige statische Umgebungen realisiert. Integriert in ein reales Testfahrzeug, wird das Zusammenspiel der live RadarNet Segmentierung und des semantischen Radar Graph-SLAM anhand einer rein Radar-basierten autonomen Parkfunktionalität evaluiert. Im Durchschnitt über 42 autonome Parkmanöver (∅3.73 km/h) bei durchschnittlicher Manöverlänge von ∅172.75m wird ein Median absoluter Posenfehler von 0.235m und End-Posenfehler von 0.2443m erreicht, der vergleichbare Radar-Lokalisierungsergebnisse um ≈ 50% übertrifft. Die Kartengenauigkeit von veränderlichen, neukartierten Orten über eine Kartierungsdistanz von ∅165m ergibt eine ≈ 56%-ige Kartenkonsistenz bei einer Abweichung von ∅0.163m. Für das autonome Parken wurde ein gegebener Trajektorienplaner und Regleransatz verwendet

    Hypothesis Testing Using Spatially Dependent Heavy-Tailed Multisensor Data

    The detection of spatially dependent heavy-tailed signals is considered in this dissertation. While the central limit theorem, and its implication of asymptotic normality of interacting random processes, is generally useful for the theoretical characterization of a wide variety of natural and man-made signals, sensor data from many different applications, in fact, are characterized by non-Gaussian distributions. A common characteristic observed in non-Gaussian data is the presence of heavy-tails or fat tails. For such data, the probability density function (p.d.f.) of extreme values decay at a slower-than-exponential rate, implying that extreme events occur with greater probability. When these events are observed simultaneously by several sensors, their observations are also spatially dependent. In this dissertation, we develop the theory of detection for such data, obtained through heterogeneous sensors. In order to validate our theoretical results and proposed algorithms, we collect and analyze the behavior of indoor footstep data using a linear array of seismic sensors. We characterize the inter-sensor dependence using copula theory. Copulas are parametric functions which bind univariate p.d.f. s, to generate a valid joint p.d.f. We model the heavy-tailed data using the class of alpha-stable distributions. We consider a two-sided test in the Neyman-Pearson framework and present an asymptotic analysis of the generalized likelihood test (GLRT). Both, nested and non-nested models are considered in the analysis. We also use a likelihood maximization-based copula selection scheme as an integral part of the detection process. Since many types of copula functions are available in the literature, selecting the appropriate copula becomes an important component of the detection problem. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated numerically on simulated data, as well as using indoor seismic data. With appropriately selected models, our results demonstrate that a high probability of detection can be achieved for false alarm probabilities of the order of 10^-4. These results, using dependent alpha-stable signals, are presented for a two-sensor case. We identify the computational challenges associated with dependent alpha-stable modeling and propose alternative schemes to extend the detector design to a multisensor (multivariate) setting. We use a hierarchical tree based approach, called vines, to model the multivariate copulas, i.e., model the spatial dependence between multiple sensors. The performance of the proposed detectors under the vine-based scheme are evaluated on the indoor footstep data, and significant improvement is observed when compared against the case when only two sensors are deployed.     Techniques for Decentralized and Dynamic Resource Allocation

    abstract: This thesis investigates three different resource allocation problems, aiming to achieve two common goals: i) adaptivity to a fast-changing environment, ii) distribution of the computation tasks to achieve a favorable solution. The motivation for this work relies on the modern-era proliferation of sensors and devices, in the Data Acquisition Systems (DAS) layer of the Internet of Things (IoT) architecture. To avoid congestion and enable low-latency services, limits have to be imposed on the amount of decisions that can be centralized (i.e. solved in the ``cloud") and/or amount of control information that devices can exchange. This has been the motivation to develop i) a lightweight PHY Layer protocol for time synchronization and scheduling in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), ii) an adaptive receiver that enables Sub-Nyquist sampling, for efficient spectrum sensing at high frequencies, and iii) an SDN-scheme for resource-sharing across different technologies and operators, to harmoniously and holistically respond to fluctuations in demands at the eNodeB' s layer. The proposed solution for time synchronization and scheduling is a new protocol, called PulseSS, which is completely event-driven and is inspired by biological networks. The results on convergence and accuracy for locally connected networks, presented in this thesis, constitute the theoretical foundation for the protocol in terms of performance guarantee. The derived limits provided guidelines for ad-hoc solutions in the actual implementation of the protocol. The proposed receiver for Compressive Spectrum Sensing (CSS) aims at tackling the noise folding phenomenon, e.g., the accumulation of noise from different sub-bands that are folded, prior to sampling and baseband processing, when an analog front-end aliasing mixer is utilized. The sensing phase design has been conducted via a utility maximization approach, thus the scheme derived has been called Cognitive Utility Maximization Multiple Access (CUMMA). The framework described in the last part of the thesis is inspired by stochastic network optimization tools and dynamics. While convergence of the proposed approach remains an open problem, the numerical results here presented suggest the capability of the algorithm to handle traffic fluctuations across operators, while respecting different time and economic constraints.     Intelligent Transportation Related Complex Systems and Sensors

    Building around innovative services related to different modes of transport and traffic management, intelligent transport systems (ITS) are being widely adopted worldwide to improve the efficiency and safety of the transportation system. They enable users to be better informed and make safer, more coordinated, and smarter decisions on the use of transport networks. Current ITSs are complex systems, made up of several components/sub-systems characterized by time-dependent interactions among themselves. Some examples of these transportation-related complex systems include: road traffic sensors, autonomous/automated cars, smart cities, smart sensors, virtual sensors, traffic control systems, smart roads, logistics systems, smart mobility systems, and many others that are emerging from niche areas. The efficient operation of these complex systems requires: i) efficient solutions to the issues of sensors/actuators used to capture and control the physical parameters of these systems, as well as the quality of data collected from these systems; ii) tackling complexities using simulations and analytical modelling techniques; and iii) applying optimization techniques to improve the performance of these systems.     When water resource systems are not under control, the consequences can be devastating. In the United States alone, flood damage cost approximately $1.5 billion annually. These losses can be avoided by building more reservoirs to hold the flood waters, but such construction is very expensive, especially because reservoirs have already been built on the best sites. A better and less expensive alternative is the development of more effective management methods for existing water resource systems, which commonly waste approximately 20 percent of their capacities through mismanagement. Statistical models first appeared in hydrology at the beginning of the 1970s. Hydrologists began to use the techniques of time series analysis and system identification in their models, which seemed to give better results than the earlier, deterministic simulation models. In addition, real-time control of water resources was being developed at the practical level and on-line measurements of rainfall and runoff from a catchment were becoming available. The conceptual models then in use could not take advantage of measurements from the catchment, but on-line measurements now allow an operator to anticipate flood waters upstream or a water shortage downstream. This book contains selected papers from a workshop devoted to the consolidation of international research on statistically estimated models for real-time forecasting and control of water resource systems. The book is divided into three parts. The first part presents several methods of forecasting for water resource systems: distributed lag models, maximum likelihood identification, nonlinear catchment models, Kalman filtering, and self-tuning predictors. The papers in the second part present methods for controlling stream quality and stream flow, and the third part describes forecasting in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Poland
