A framework based on Gaussian mixture models and Kalman filters for the segmentation and tracking of anomalous events in shipboard video
Anomalous indications in monitoring equipment on board U.S. Navy vessels must be handled in a timely manner to prevent catastrophic system failure. The development of sensor data analysis techniques to assist a ship\u27s crew in monitoring machinery and summon required ship-to-shore assistance is of considerable benefit to the Navy. In addition, the Navy has a large interest in the development of distance support technology in its ongoing efforts to reduce manning on ships. In this thesis, algorithms have been developed for the detection of anomalous events that can be identified from the analysis of monochromatic stationary ship surveillance video streams. The specific anomalies that we have focused on are the presence and growth of smoke and fire events inside the frames of the video stream. The algorithm consists of the following steps. First, a foreground segmentation algorithm based on adaptive Gaussian mixture models is employed to detect the presence of motion in a scene. The algorithm is adapted to emphasize gray-level characteristics related to smoke and fire events in the frame. Next, shape discriminant features in the foreground are enhanced using morphological operations. Following this step, the anomalous indication is tracked between frames using Kalman filtering. Finally, gray level shape and motion features corresponding to the anomaly are subjected to principal component analysis and classified using a multilayer perceptron neural network. The algorithm is exercised on 68 video streams that include the presence of anomalous events (such as fire and smoke) and benign/nuisance events (such as humans walking the field of view). Initial results show that the algorithm is successful in detecting anomalies in video streams, and is suitable for application in shipboard environments
Improved foreground detection via block-based classifier cascade with probabilistic decision integration
Background subtraction is a fundamental low-level processing task in numerous computer vision applications. The vast majority of algorithms process images on a pixel-by-pixel basis, where an independent decision is made for each pixel. A general limitation of such processing is that rich contextual information is not taken into account. We propose a block-based method capable of dealing with noise, illumination variations, and dynamic backgrounds, while still obtaining smooth contours of foreground objects. Specifically, image sequences are analyzed on an overlapping block-by-block basis. A low-dimensional texture descriptor obtained from each block is passed through an adaptive classifier cascade, where each stage handles a distinct problem. A probabilistic foreground mask generation approach then exploits block overlaps to integrate interim block-level decisions into final pixel-level foreground segmentation. Unlike many pixel-based methods, ad-hoc postprocessing of foreground masks is not required. Experiments on the difficult Wallflower and I2R datasets show that the proposed approach obtains on average better results (both qualitatively and quantitatively) than several prominent methods. We furthermore propose the use of tracking performance as an unbiased approach for assessing the practical usefulness of foreground segmentation methods, and show that the proposed approach leads to considerable improvements in tracking accuracy on the CAVIAR dataset
Object Tracking
Object tracking consists in estimation of trajectory of moving objects in the sequence of images. Automation of the computer object tracking is a difficult task. Dynamics of multiple parameters changes representing features and motion of the objects, and temporary partial or full occlusion of the tracked objects have to be considered. This monograph presents the development of object tracking algorithms, methods and systems. Both, state of the art of object tracking methods and also the new trends in research are described in this book. Fourteen chapters are split into two sections. Section 1 presents new theoretical ideas whereas Section 2 presents real-life applications. Despite the variety of topics contained in this monograph it constitutes a consisted knowledge in the field of computer object tracking. The intention of editor was to follow up the very quick progress in the developing of methods as well as extension of the application
High-quality region-based foreground segmentation using a spatial grid of SVM classifiers
This paper presents a novel background modeling system that uses a spatial grid of Support Vector Machines classifiers for segmenting moving objects, which is a key step in many video-based consumer applications. The system is able to adapt to a large range of dynamic background situations since no parametric model or statistical distribution are assumed. This is achieved by using a different classifier per image region that learns the specific appearance of that scene region and its variations (illumination changes, dynamic backgrounds, etc.). The proposed system has been tested with a recent public database, outperforming other state-of-the-art algorithms

Foreground detection of video through the integration of novel multiple detection algorithims
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel UniversityThe main outcomes of this research are the design of a foreground detection algorithm, which is more accurate and less time consuming than existing algorithms. By the term accuracy we mean an exact mask (which satisfies the respective ground truth value) of the foreground object(s). Motion detection being the prior component of foreground detection process can be achieved via pixel based and block based methods, both of which have their own merits and disadvantages. Pixel based methods are efficient in terms of accuracy but a time consuming process, so cannot be recommended for real time applications. On the other hand block based motion estimation has relatively less accuracy but consumes less time and is thus ideal for real-time applications. In the first proposed algorithm, block based motion estimation technique is opted for timely execution. To overcome the issue of accuracy another morphological based technique was adopted called opening-and-closing by reconstruction, which is a pixel based operation so produces higher accuracy and requires lesser time in execution. Morphological operation opening-and-closing by reconstruction finds the maxima and minima inside the foreground object(s). Thus this novel simultaneous process compensates for the lower accuracy of block based motion estimation. To verify the efficiency of this algorithm a complex video consisting of multiple colours, and fast and slow motions at various places was selected. Based on 11 different performance measures the proposed algorithm achieved an average accuracy of more than 24.73% than four of the well-established algorithms. Background subtraction, being the most cited algorithm for foreground detection, encounters the major problem of proper threshold value at run time. For effective value of the threshold at run time in background subtraction algorithm, the primary component of the foreground detection process, motion is used, in this next proposed algorithm. For the said purpose the smooth histogram peaks and valley of the motion were analyzed, which reflects the high and slow motion areas of the moving object(s) in the given frame and generates the threshold value at run time by exploiting the values of peaks and valley. This proposed algorithm was tested using four recommended video sequences including indoor and outdoor shoots, and were compared with five high ranked algorithms. Based on the values of standard performance measures, the proposed algorithm achieved an average of more than 12.30% higher accuracy results
Motion Segmentation Aided Super Resolution Image Reconstruction
This dissertation addresses Super Resolution (SR) Image Reconstruction focusing on motion segmentation. The main thrust is Information Complexity guided Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) for Statistical Background Modeling. In the process of developing our framework we also focus on two other topics; motion trajectories estimation toward global and local scene change detections and image reconstruction to have high resolution (HR) representations of the moving regions. Such a framework is used for dynamic scene understanding and recognition of individuals and threats with the help of the image sequences recorded with either stationary or non-stationary camera systems.
We introduce a new technique called Information Complexity guided Statistical Background Modeling. Thus, we successfully employ GMMs, which are optimal with respect to information complexity criteria. Moving objects are segmented out through background subtraction which utilizes the computed background model. This technique produces superior results to competing background modeling strategies.
The state-of-the-art SR Image Reconstruction studies combine the information from a set of unremarkably different low resolution (LR) images of static scene to construct an HR representation. The crucial challenge not handled in these studies is accumulating the corresponding information from highly displaced moving objects. In this aspect, a framework of SR Image Reconstruction of the moving objects with such high level of displacements is developed. Our assumption is that LR images are different from each other due to local motion of the objects and the global motion of the scene imposed by non-stationary imaging system. Contrary to traditional SR approaches, we employed several steps. These steps are; the suppression of the global motion, motion segmentation accompanied by background subtraction to extract moving objects, suppression of the local motion of the segmented out regions, and super-resolving accumulated information coming from moving objects rather than the whole scene. This results in a reliable offline SR Image Reconstruction tool which handles several types of dynamic scene changes, compensates the impacts of camera systems, and provides data redundancy through removing the background. The framework proved to be superior to the state-of-the-art algorithms which put no significant effort toward dynamic scene representation of non-stationary camera systems
Application of Multi-Sensor Fusion Technology in Target Detection and Recognition
