Smart Learning
Artificial intelligence applied to the educational field has a vast potential, especially after
the e ects worldwide of the COVID-19 pandemic. Online or blended educational modes are needed
to respond to the health situation we are living in. The tutorial e ort is higher than in the traditional
face-to-face approach. Thus, educational systems are claiming smarter learning technologies that
do not pretend to substitute the faculty but make their teaching activities easy. This Special Issue is
oriented to present a collection of papers of original advances in educational applications and services
propelled by artificial intelligence, big data, machine learning, and deep learning
Intelligent Tutoring Systems and Planning Tecniques: A Systematic Review
Planning is a problem-solving method that produces an action sequence (i.e. plan) to achieve a goal. Instructional Planning is a central issue to develop adaptive educational software and Intelligent Tutoring Systems. The objective of this paper is to conduct a systematic review of planning techniques used in ITS in the last twenty years. In this review, 969 papers in 6 digital reference libraries extensively used by computer science researchers were identified. After a selection process using the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 20 relevant papers were chosen. The results present the existence of a relevant research gap. Among the retrieved papers, no document which uses Goal Reasoning-based planning techniques was found, and more specifically, no system that use the process of autonomy based on goals.Planning is a problem-solving method that produces an action sequence (i.e. plan) to achieve a goal.
AI ethics and higher education : good practice and guidance for educators, learners, and institutions
Artificial intelligence (AI) is exerting unprecedented pressure on the global
higher educational landscape in transforming recruitment processes, subverting
traditional pedagogy, and creating new research and institutional opportunities.
These technologies require contextual and global ethical analysis so that they may
be developed and deployed in higher education in just and responsible ways.
To-date, these efforts have been largely focused on small parts of the educational
environments leaving most of the world out of an essential contribution.
This volume acts as a corrective to this and contributes to the building of
competencies in ethics education and to broader, global debates about how AI
will transform various facets of our lives, not the least of which is higher education
