    A brief review of neural networks based learning and control and their applications for robots

    As an imitation of the biological nervous systems, neural networks (NN), which are characterized with powerful learning ability, have been employed in a wide range of applications, such as control of complex nonlinear systems, optimization, system identification and patterns recognition etc. This article aims to bring a brief review of the state-of-art NN for the complex nonlinear systems. Recent progresses of NNs in both theoretical developments and practical applications are investigated and surveyed. Specifically, NN based robot learning and control applications were further reviewed, including NN based robot manipulator control, NN based human robot interaction and NN based behavior recognition and generation

    Continuous time controller based on SMC and disturbance observer for piezoelectric actuators

    Abstract – In this work, analog application for the Sliding Mode Control (SMC) to piezoelectric actuators (PEA) is presented. DSP application of the algorithm suffers from ADC and DAC conversions and mainly faces limitations in sampling time interval. Moreover piezoelectric actuators are known to have very large bandwidth close to the DSP operation frequency. Therefore, with the direct analog application, improvement of the performance and high frequency operation are expected. Design of an appropriate SMC together with a disturbance observer is suggested to have continuous control output and related experimental results for position tracking are presented with comparison of DSP and analog control application

    A robust controller is developed for uncertain, second-order nonlinear systems subject to simultaneous unknown, time-varying state delays and known, time-varying input delays in addition to additive, sufficiently smooth disturbances. An integral term composed of previous control values facilitates a delay-free open-loop error system and the development of the feedback control structure. A stability analysis based on Lyapunov-Krasovskii (LK) functionals guarantees uniformly ultimately bounded tracking under the assumption that the delays are bounded and slowly varying

    High-Performance Tracking for Piezoelectric Actuators Using Super-Twisting Algorithm Based on Artificial Neural Networks

    Piezoelectric actuators (PEA) are frequently employed in applications where nano-Micr-odisplacement is required because of their high-precision performance. However, the positioning is affected substantially by the hysteresis which resembles in an nonlinear effect. In addition, hysteresis mathematical models own deficiencies that can influence on the reference following performance. The objective of this study was to enhance the tracking accuracy of a commercial PEA stack actuator with the implementation of a novel approach which consists in the use of a Super-Twisting Algorithm (STA) combined with artificial neural networks (ANN). A Lyapunov stability proof is bestowed to explain the theoretical solution. Experimental results of the proposed method were compared with a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller. The outcomes in a real PEA reported that the novel structure is stable as it was proved theoretically, and the experiments provided a significant error reduction in contrast with the PID.This research was funded by Basque Government and UPV/EHU projects

    Control of large-scale structures with large uncertainties

The approach is traditionally executed by appropriately sizing stiffnesses, but recently, passive energy dissipation systems have gained popularity. Semi-active and active energy dissipation systems have been shown to outperform purely passive systems, but they are not yet widely accepted in the construction and structural engineering fields. Several factors are impeding the application of semi-active and active damping systems, such as large modeling uncertainties that are inherent to large-scale structures, limited state measurements, lack of mechanically reliable control devices, large power requirements, and the need for robust controllers. In order to enhance acceptability of feedback control systems to civil structures, an integrated control strategy designed for large-scale structures with large parametric uncertainties is proposed. The control strategy comprises a novel controller, as well as a new semi-active mechanical damping device. Specifically, the controller is an adaptive black-box representation that creates and optimizes control laws sequentially during an excitation, with no prior training. The novel feature is its online organization of the input space. The representation only requires limited observations for constructing an efficient representation, which allows control of unknown systems with limited state measurements. The semi-active mechanical device consists of a friction device inspired by a vehicle drum brakes, with a viscous and a stiffness element installed in parallel. Its unique characteristic is its theoretical damping force reaching the order of 100 kN, using a friction mechanism powered with a single 12-volts battery. It is conceived using mechanically reliable technologies, which is a solution to large power requirement and mechanical robustness. The integrated control system is simulated on an existing structure located in Boston, MA, as a replacement to the existing viscous damping system. Simulation results show that the integrated control system can mitigate wind vibrations as well as the current damping strategy, utilizing only one third of devices. In addition, the system created effective control rules for several types of earthquake excitations with no prior training, performing similarly to an optimal controller using full parametric and state knowledge.by Simon Laflamme.Ph.D

    State of the art of control schemes for smart systems featuring magneto-rheological materials

    This review presents various control strategies for application systems utilizing smart magneto-rheological fluid (MRF) and magneto-rheological elastomers (MRE). It is well known that both MRF and MRE are actively studied and applied to many practical systems such as vehicle dampers. The mandatory requirements for successful applications of MRF and MRE include several factors: advanced material properties, optimal mechanisms, suitable modeling, and appropriate control schemes. Among these requirements, the use of an appropriate control scheme is a crucial factor since it is the final action stage of the application systems to achieve the desired output responses. There are numerous different control strategies which have been applied to many different application systems of MRF and MRE, summarized in this review. In the literature review, advantages and disadvantages of each control scheme are discussed so that potential researchers can develop more effective strategies to achieve higher control performance of many application systems utilizing magneto-rheological materials
