    A New Approach for Fingerprint Authentication in Biometric Systems Using BRISK Algorithm

    Now a day, Authentication process in biometric system become most critical task with the expansive of individual information in the world. Where in many current applications, devices and commercial treatments required fingerprint identification process in order to verify the requested services. Most technologies also motivate to this direction. With the increasing of fingerprints uses, there is a need to provide a technique that able to handle the issues that exist in fingerprint acquisition and verification processes. Typically, fingerprint authenticated based on pick small amount of information from some points called Minutiae points. This approach suffers from many issues and provide poor results when the samples of fingerprints are degraded (scale, illumination, direction) changes. However, BRISK algorithm used to handle the previous issues and to extract the significant information from corner points in fingerprint. BRISK is invariant to scale, illumination, and direction changes and its able to pick large number of information when compared with minutiae points. In this paper, BRISK algorithm used based on image based approach, where current recognition matrices are developed and proposed new metrics without need for human interaction. UPEK dataset used to test the performance of proposed system, where the results show high accuracy rate in this dataset. Proposed system evaluated using FAR, FRR, EER and Accuracy and based on selected metrics the proposed system and methodology achieve high accuracy rate than others, and gives a novel modification in authentication task in biometric system

    Energy-Efficient Data Management in Wireless Sensor Networks

    Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are deployed widely for various applications. A variety of useful data are generated by these deployments. Since WSNs have limited resources and unreliable communication links, traditional data management techniques are not suitable. Therefore, designing effective data management techniques for WSNs becomes important. In this dissertation, we address three key issues of data management in WSNs. For data collection, a scheme of making some nodes sleep and estimating their values according to the other active nodes’ readings has been proved energy-efficient. For the purpose of improving the precision of estimation, we propose two powerful estimation models, Data Estimation using a Physical Model (DEPM) and Data Estimation using a Statistical Model (DESM). Most of existing data processing approaches of WSNs are real-time. However, historical data of WSNs are also significant for various applications. No previous study has specifically addressed distributed historical data query processing. We propose an Index based Historical Data Query Processing scheme which stores historical data locally and processes queries energy-efficiently by using a distributed index tree. Area query processing is significant for various applications of WSNs. No previous study has specifically addressed this issue. We propose an energy-efficient in-network area query processing scheme. In our scheme, we use an intelligent method (Grid lists) to describe an area, thus reducing the communication cost and dropping useless data as early as possible. With a thorough simulation study, it is shown that our schemes are effective and energy- efficient. Based on the area query processing algorithm, an Intelligent Monitoring System is designed to detect various events and provide real-time and accurate information for escaping, rescuing, and evacuation when a dangerous event happened

    A Novel and Effective Short Track Speed Skating Tracking System

    This dissertation proposes a novel and effective system for tracking high-speed skaters. A novel registration method is employed to automatically discover key frames to build the panorama. Then, the homography between a frame and the real world rink can be generated accordingly. Aimed at several challenging tracking problems of short track skating, a novel multiple-objects tracking approach is proposed which includes: Gaussian mixture models (GMMs), evolving templates, constrained dynamical model, fuzzy model, multiple templates initialization, and evolution. The outputs of the system include spatialtemporal trajectories, velocity analysis, and 2D reconstruction animations. The tracking accuracy is about 10 cm (2 pixels). Such information is invaluable for sports experts. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed system

    Advanced traffic video analytics for robust traffic accident detection

    Automatic traffic accident detection is an important task in traffic video analysis due to its key applications in developing intelligent transportation systems. Reducing the time delay between the occurrence of an accident and the dispatch of the first responders to the scene may help lower the mortality rate and save lives. Since 1980, many approaches have been presented for the automatic detection of incidents in traffic videos. In this dissertation, some challenging problems for accident detection in traffic videos are discussed and a new framework is presented in order to automatically detect single-vehicle and intersection traffic accidents in real-time. First, a new foreground detection method is applied in order to detect the moving vehicles and subtract the ever-changing background in the traffic video frames captured by static or non-stationary cameras. For the traffic videos captured during day-time, the cast shadows degrade the performance of the foreground detection and road segmentation. A novel cast shadow detection method is therefore presented to detect and remove the shadows cast by moving vehicles and also the shadows cast by static objects on the road. Second, a new method is presented to detect the region of interest (ROI), which applies the location of the moving vehicles and the initial road samples and extracts the discriminating features to segment the road region. After detecting the ROI, the moving direction of the traffic is estimated based on the rationale that the crashed vehicles often make rapid change of direction. Lastly, single-vehicle traffic accidents and trajectory conflicts are detected using the first-order logic decision-making system. The experimental results using publicly available videos and a dataset provided by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed methods. Additionally, the main challenges and future directions are discussed regarding (i) improving the performance of the foreground segmentation, (ii) reducing the computational complexity, and (iii) detecting other types of traffic accidents

    Image Reconstruction and Evaluation: Applications on Micro-Surfaces and Lenna Image Representation

    This article develops algorithms for the characterization and the visualization of micro-scale features using a small number of sample points, with the goal of mitigating the measurement shortcomings, which are often destructive or time consuming. The popular measurement techniques that are used in imaging of micro-surfaces include the 3D stylus or interferometric profilometry and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), where both could represent the micro-surface characteristics in terms of 3D dimensional topology and greyscale image, respectively. Such images could be highly dense; therefore, traditional image processing techniques might be computationally expensive. We implement the algorithms in several case studies to rapidly examine the microscopic features of micro-surface of Microelectromechanical System (MEMS), and then we validate the results using a popular greyscale image; i.e., “Lenna” image. The contributions of this research include: First, development of local and global algorithm based on modified Thin Plate Spline (TPS) model to reconstruct high resolution images of the micro-surface’s topography, and its derivatives using low resolution images. Second, development of a bending energy algorithm from our modified TPS model for filtering out image defects. Finally, development of a computationally efficient technique, referred to as Windowing, which combines TPS and Linear Sequential Estimation (LSE) methods, to enhance the visualization of images.     Efficient Pedestrian Detection in Urban Traffic Scenes

    Pedestrians are important participants in urban traffic environments, and thus act as an interesting category of objects for autonomous cars. Automatic pedestrian detection is an essential task for protecting pedestrians from collision. In this thesis, we investigate and develop novel approaches by interpreting spatial and temporal characteristics of pedestrians, in three different aspects: shape, cognition and motion. The special up-right human body shape, especially the geometry of the head and shoulder area, is the most discriminative characteristic for pedestrians from other object categories. Inspired by the success of Haar-like features for detecting human faces, which also exhibit a uniform shape structure, we propose to design particular Haar-like features for pedestrians. Tailored to a pre-defined statistical pedestrian shape model, Haar-like templates with multiple modalities are designed to describe local difference of the shape structure. Cognition theories aim to explain how human visual systems process input visual signals in an accurate and fast way. By emulating the center-surround mechanism in human visual systems, we design multi-channel, multi-direction and multi-scale contrast features, and boost them to respond to the appearance of pedestrians. In this way, our detector is considered as a top-down saliency system. In the last part of this thesis, we exploit the temporal characteristics for moving pedestrians and then employ motion information for feature design, as well as for regions of interest (ROIs) selection. Motion segmentation on optical flow fields enables us to select those blobs most probably containing moving pedestrians; a combination of Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) and motion self difference features further enables robust detection. We test our three approaches on image and video data captured in urban traffic scenes, which are rather challenging due to dynamic and complex backgrounds. The achieved results demonstrate that our approaches reach and surpass state-of-the-art performance, and can also be employed for other applications, such as indoor robotics or public surveillance.     Tiles: an online algorithm for community discovery in dynamic social networks

    Community discovery has emerged during the last decade as one of the most challenging problems in social network analysis. Many algorithms have been proposed to find communities on static networks, i.e. networks which do not change in time. However, social networks are dynamic realities (e.g. call graphs, online social networks): in such scenarios static community discovery fails to identify a partition of the graph that is semantically consistent with the temporal information expressed by the data. In this work we propose Tiles, an algorithm that extracts overlapping communities and tracks their evolution in time following an online iterative procedure. Our algorithm operates following a domino effect strategy, dynamically recomputing nodes community memberships whenever a new interaction takes place. We compare Tiles with state-of-the-art community detection algorithms on both synthetic and real world networks having annotated community structure: our experiments show that the proposed approach is able to guarantee lower execution times and better correspondence with the ground truth communities than its competitors.
