    An Iterated Greedy Heuristic for Mixed No-Wait Flowshop Problems

    [EN] The mixed no-wait flowshop problem with both wait and no-wait constraints has many potential real-life applications. The problem can be regarded as a generalization of the traditional permutation flowshop and the no-wait flowshop. In this paper, we study, for the first time, this scheduling setting with makespan minimization. We first propose a mathematical model and then we design a speed-up makespan calculation procedure. By introducing a varying number of destructed jobs, a modified iterated greedy algorithm is proposed for the considered problem which consists of four components: 1) initialization solution construction; 2) destruction; 3) reconstruction; and 4) local search. To further improve the intensification and efficiency of the proposal, insertion is performed on some neighbor jobs of the best position in a sequence during the initialization, solution construction, and reconstruction phases. After calibrating parameters and components, the proposal is compared with five existing algorithms for similar problems on adapted Taillard benchmark instances.     Solving no-wait two-stage flexible flow shop scheduling problem with unrelated parallel machines and rework time by the adjusted discrete Multi Objective Invasive Weed Optimization and fuzzy dominance approach

    Purpose: Adjusted discrete Multi-Objective Invasive Weed Optimization (DMOIWO) algorithm, which uses fuzzy dominant approach for ordering, has been proposed to solve No-wait two-stage flexible flow shop scheduling problem. Design/methodology/approach: No-wait two-stage flexible flow shop scheduling problem by considering sequence-dependent setup times and probable rework in both stations, different ready times for all jobs and rework times for both stations as well as unrelated parallel machines with regards to the simultaneous minimization of maximum job completion time and average latency functions have been investigated in a multi-objective manner. In this study, the parameter setting has been carried out using Taguchi Method based on the quality indicator for beater performance of the algorithm. Findings: The results of this algorithm have been compared with those of conventional, multi-objective algorithms to show the better performance of the proposed algorithm. The results clearly indicated the greater performance of the proposed algorithm. Originality/value: This study provides an efficient method for solving multi objective no-wait two-stage flexible flow shop scheduling problem by considering sequence-dependent setup times, probable rework in both stations, different ready times for all jobs, rework times for both stations and unrelated parallel machines which are the real constraints.Peer Reviewe

    A new constructive heuristic for the No-Wait Flowshop Scheduling Problem

    International audienceConstructive heuristics have a great interest as they manage to find in a very short time, solutions of relatively good quality. Such solutions may be used as initial solutions for metaheuristics for example. In this work, we propose a new efficient constructive heuristic for the No-Wait Flowshop Scheduling Problem. This proposed heuristic is based on observations on the structure of best solutions of small instances as well as on analyzes of efficient constructive heuristics principles of the literature. Experiments have been conducted and results show the efficiency of the proposed heuristic compared to ones from the literature

Defesa: Curitiba, 09/02/2017Inclui referências : f. 449-492Resumo: Desde o seminal artigo de Johnson em 1954, a Programação da Produção em Shop Scheduling tem se tornado uma área relevante dentro da Pesquisa Operacional e, atualmente, duzentos trabalhos tangentes à temática são publicados anualmente. Dentre os artigos aqui citados tem-se aqueles que se dedicam à apresentação e síntese do estado da arte desse assunto, intitulados artigos de revisão. Quando tais artigos são elaborados a partir de um conjunto objetivo de critérios, relativos à categorização dos artigos selecionados, tem-se a Revisão Sistemática da Literatura (RSL). O presente trabalho realiza uma RSL em Shop Scheduling, a partir da análise de cada ambiente fabril que o compõe. Fez-se o escrutínio de 560 artigos, à luz de um conjunto de métricas, que constitui a estrutura basilar da proposta de nova taxonomia do Shop Scheduling, complementar à notação de Graham, objetivo fulcral do presente trabalho. Além disso, utilizou-se uma representação em redes dos resultados obtidos em algumas das métricas empregadas, como a característica dos itens, algo outrora inaudito em estudos de revisão desse assunto. Ademais, outro ponto relevante desse estudo repousa na identificação de campos pouco explorados, de modo a colaborar com a pesquisa futura neste tomo. Palavras-chave: Shop Scheduling. Representação em Redes.Abstract: Since Johnson's seminal article in 1954, Shop Scheduling in Production Scheduling has become a relevant area within Operational Research, and currently hundreds of tangential works on the subject are published annually. Among the articles cited here are those dedicated to the presentation and synthesis of the state of the art of this subject, which are entitled review articles. When these articles are elaborated from an objective set of criteria, regarding the categorization of the selected articles, we have the Systematic Review of Literature (SLR). The present work performs a SLR in Shop Scheduling, based on the analysis of each manufacturing environment that composes it. There were 560 articles scrutinized based on a set of metrics, which is the basic structure of the proposed new Taxonomy of Shop Scheduling, complementary to Graham's notation, the main objective of this work. In addition to that a network representation of the results was obtained in some of the metrics used, such as the job characteristics, something previously unheard of in review studies of this subject. Moreover, another relevant point of this study lies in the identification of less explored fields in order to collaborate with future research in this matter. Keywords: Shop Scheduling.     Minimization of total tardiness in no-wait flowshop production systems with preventive maintenance

    Efficient business organizations must balance quality, cost, and time constraints in competitive environments. Reflecting the complexity of this task, we consider manufacturing systems including several stages of production chains requiring time measurement. When production scheduling is not prioritized in such enterprises, several negative effects may occur. A corporation may suffer financial penalties as well as negative brand exposure, and thus may find its credibility challenged. Therefore, in this study, we propose constructive methods to minimize a total tardiness criterion, considering preventative maintenance constraints to reflect the reality of industrial practice, focusing on a no-wait flowshop environment in which jobs are successively processed without operational interruptions. In addition to proposing constructive methods to solve the no-wait flowshop production scheduling problem, a metaheuristic is presented as an approach to improve results obtained by constructive methods. Computational experiments were designed and performed to compare several production scheduling algorithms. Among various constructive heuristics considered, an algorithm called HENLL using an insertion logic showed the best performance. The proposed metaheuristic is based on the iterated greedy (IG) search method, and the results obtained demonstrated significant improvement compared to the heuristics alone. It is expected that this study may be used by production planning and control (PPC) professionals to apply the proposed method to schedule production more efficiently. We show that the proposed method successfully presented a better solution in relation to total tardiness, considering the above mentioned environment

    Generally speaking, scheduling is the procedure of mapping a set of tasks or jobs (studied objects) to a set of target resources efficiently. More specifically, as a part of a larger planning and scheduling process, production scheduling is essential for the proper functioning of a manufacturing enterprise. This book presents ten chapters divided into five sections. Section 1 discusses rescheduling strategies, policies, and methods for production scheduling. Section 2 presents two chapters about flow shop scheduling. Section 3 describes heuristic and metaheuristic methods for treating the scheduling problem in an efficient manner. In addition, two test cases are presented in Section 4. The first uses simulation, while the second shows a real implementation of a production scheduling system. Finally, Section 5 presents some modeling strategies for building production scheduling systems. This book will be of interest to those working in the decision-making branches of production, in various operational research areas, as well as computational methods design. People from a diverse background ranging from academia and research to those working in industry, can take advantage of this volume

    The investigation of the effect of scheduling rules on FMS performance

    The application of Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMSs) has an effect in competitiveness, not only of individual companies but of those countries whose manufactured exports play a significant part in their economy (Hartley, 1984). However, the increasing use of FM Ss to effectively provide customers with diversified products has created a significant set of operational challenges for managers (Mahmoodi et al., 1999). In more recent years therefore, there has been a concentration of effort on FMS scheduling without which the benefits of an FMS cannot be realized. The objective of the reported research is to investigate and extend the contribution which can be made to the FMS scheduling problem through the implementation of computer-based experiments that consider real-time situations.     Production planning of biopharmaceutical manufacture.

    Multiproduct manufacturing facilities running on a campaign basis are increasingly becoming the norm for biopharmaceuticals, owing to high risks of clinical failure, regulatory pressures and the increasing number of therapeutics in clinical evaluation. The need for such flexible plants and cost-effective manufacture pose significant challenges for planning and scheduling, which are compounded by long production lead times, intermediate product stability issues and the high cost - low volume nature of biopharmaceutical manufacture. Scheduling and planning decisions are often made in the presence of variable product titres, campaign durations, contamination rates and product demands. Hence this thesis applies mathematical programming techniques to the planning of biopharmaceutical manufacture in order to identify more optimal production plans under different manufacturing scenarios. A deterministic mixed integer linear programming (MILP) medium term planning model which explicitly accounts for upstream and downstream processing is presented. A multiscenario MILP model for the medium term planning of biopharmaceutical manufacture under uncertainty is presented and solved using an iterative solution procedure. An alternative stochastic formulation for the medium term planning of biomanufacture under uncertainty based on the principles of chance constrained programming is also presented. To help manage the risks of long term capacity planning in the biopharmaceutical industry, a goal programming extension is presented which accounts for multiple objectives including cost, risk and customer service level satisfaction. The model is applied to long term capacity analysis of a mix of contractors and owned biopharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. In the final sections of this thesis an example of a commercial application of this work is presented, followed by a discussion on related validation issues in the biopharmaceutical industry. The work in this thesis highlighted the benefits of applying mathematical programming techniques for production planning of biopharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, so as to enhance the biopharmaceutical industry's strategic and operational decision-making towards achieving more cost-effective manufacture
