The Use of ITIL for Process Optimisation in the IT Service Centre of Harz University, exemplified in the Release Management Process

    Get PDF
This paper details the use of the IT Infrastructure Library Framework (ITIL) for optimising process workflows in the IT Service Centre of Harz University in Wernigerode, Germany, exemplified by the Release Management Process. It is described, how, during the course of a special ITIL project, the As-Is-Status of the various original processes was documented as part of the process life cycle and then transformed in the To-Be-Status, according to the ITIL Best Practice Framework. It is also shown, how the ITIL framework fits into the four-layered-process model, that could be derived from interviews with the universities IT support staff, and how the various modified processes interconnect with each other to form a value chain. The paper highlights the final results of the project and gives an outlook on the future use of ITIL as a business modelling tool in the IT Service Centre of Harz University. It is currently being considered, whether the process model developed during the project could be used as a reference model for other university IT centres.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

Value-oriented process modeling - towards a financial perspective on business process redesign

    Get PDF
To date, typical process modeling approaches put a strong emphasis on describing behavioral aspects of business operations. However, they often neglect value-related information. Yet, such information is of key importance to strategic decisionmaking, for instance in the context of process improvement or business engineering. In this paper we propose a valueoriented approach to business process modeling based on key concepts and metrics from operations and financial management. A simple case study suggests that our approach facilitates managerial decision-making in the context of process re-design

The Emergence of Enterprise Systems Management - A Challenge to the IS Curriculum

    Get PDF
This paper proposes four cornerstones of a future Information Systems curriculum. It analyzes the challenges of the IS curriculum based on the development of enterprise systems, and further argues that the practice and the research into enterprise systems have progressed to a new stage resulting in the emergence of Enterprise Systems Management (ESM). Enterprise Systems Management calls for new competences and consequently represents new challenges to the IS curriculum. The paper outlines potential teaching issues and discusses the impact on the IS curriculum. Finally the paper suggests ways of approaching the challenges. No; keywords

The Role of Entrepreneurship in Productivity Growth: Decentralized versus Centrally Planned Economies

    Get PDF
Trends in gross domestic product (GDP) and total factor productivity (TFP) growth in the former socialist economies seem to indicate that these economies were converging to unusually low long-run growth rates in the late 1980s. In this paper we develop an endogenous growth model of entrepreneurship that is able to account for the difference in long-run performance between centrally planned economies and market-oriented ones. Long-run growth rates of output and productivity are determined by the growth of the stock of managerial knowledge, which in turn depends on the share of the population involved in entrepreneurial activities and on the time that they spend on those activities. We analyze the effect of two characteristics of centrally planned economies on their growth performance. First, in centrally planned economies factors of production are distributed by the central planner to the firms’ managers through a contest that uses up some of the managers’ productive effort. Second, the leadership is “egalitarian”, in the sense that it treats individuals with different abilities equally. We show that these two features reduce the fraction of people becoming entrepreneurs/managers, as well as their managerial effort, which in turn reduces long-run output and TFP growth. Furthermore, we find that centrally planned economies have lower income inequality and slightly higher capital-output ratios, which is consistent with these countries’ experiences.managerial knowledge, productivity, growth, economic systems

    Get PDF
Rapid expansion by modern businesses impacts significantly on traditional businesses, including Village Unit Cooperative as a business model mandated by The Indonesian Primary Constitution, i.e, The Constitution of 1945. Several weaknesses faced by Village Unit Cooperative against modern business include limited resources (i.e, financial and infrastructure), low level of education for employees and managers, traditional managerial style, and so-forth. Data collected through in-depth interview with the head of the cooperative unit and other related officers as well as village unit cooperatives’ managers and staffs in Banyumas Region, Indonesia as a sample of this study, conclude that almost Village Unit Cooperatives are in bad financial performance. Therefore, it needs an effective revitalization model to strengthen both financial and nonfinancial performances of cooperative to keep the survival of this business. This study aims to find out an effective revitalization model that could be implemented on Village Unit Cooperatives in Banyumas region in particular and as a model for all Village Unit Cooperatives in Indonesia in general. Therefore, the Village Unit Cooperatives are able to survive and contribute in boosting populist economic system for Indonesian people. To achieve this objective this study implements qualitative approach by using observations, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions in data collection during the 2014-2015 period. Then, data is analyzed with the interaction method which consists of data reduction, data presentation and drawing a conclusion to develop the most appropriate revitalization model for Village Unit Cooperatives in Indonesia. Moreover, findings of this study suggest that the revitalization of Village Unit Cooperatives could be developed in several steps, i.e, classifying Village Unit Cooperatives into active and inactive, reactivating and merging inactive Village Unit Cooperatives, restructuring all Village Unit Cooperatives, and strengthening their businesses.peer-reviewe
