Copyright @ 2008 Springer-Verlag.In recent years, automatic human motion recognition has been widely researched within the computer vision and image processing communities. Here we propose a real-time embedded vision solution for human motion recognition implemented on a ubiquitous device. There are three main contributions in this paper. Firstly, we have developed a fast human motion recognition system with simple motion features and a linear Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. The method has been tested on a large, public human action dataset and achieved competitive performance for the temporal template (eg. “motion history image”) class of approaches. Secondly, we have developed a reconfigurable, FPGA based video processing architecture. One advantage of this architecture is that the system processing performance can be reconfiured for a particular application, with the addition of new or replicated processing cores. Finally, we have successfully implemented a human motion recognition system on this reconfigurable architecture. With a small number of human actions (hand gestures), this stand-alone system is performing reliably, with an 80% average recognition rate using limited training data. This type of system has applications in security systems, man-machine communications and intelligent environments.DTI and Broadcom Ltd

Adaptive Video Streaming with Network Coding enabled Named Data Networking

The fast and huge increase of Internet traffic motivates the development of new communication methods that can deal with the growing volume of data traffic. To this aim, named data networking (NDN) has been proposed as a future Internet architecture that enables ubiquitous in-network caching and naturally supports multipath data delivery. Particular attention has been given to using dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP to enable video streaming in NDN as in both schemes data transmission is triggered and controlled by the clients. However, state-of-the-art works do not consider the multipath capabilities of NDN and the potential improvements that multipath communication brings, such as increased throughput and reliability, which are fundamental for video streaming systems. In this paper, we present a novel architecture for dynamic adaptive streaming over network coding enabled NDN. In comparison to previous works proposing dynamic adaptive streaming over NDN, our architecture exploits network coding to efficiently use the multiple paths connecting the clients to the sources. Moreover, our architecture enables efficient multisource video streaming and improves resiliency to Data packet losses. The experimental evaluation shows that our architecture leads to reduced data traffic load on the sources, increased cache-hit rate at the in-network caches and faster adaptation of the requested video quality by the clients. The performance gains are verified through simulations in a Netflix-like scenario

    An Advanced Home ElderCare Service

With the increase of welfare cost all over the developed world, there is a need to resort to new technologies that could help reduce this enormous cost and provide some quality eldercare services. This paper presents a middleware-level solution that integrates monitoring and emergency detection solutions with networking solutions. The proposed system enables efficient integration between a variety of sensors and actuators deployed at home for emergency detection and provides a framework for creating and managing rescue teams willing to assist elders in case of emergency situations. A prototype of the proposed system was designed and implemented. Results were obtained from both computer simulations and a real-network testbed. These results show that the proposed system can help overcome some of the current problems and help reduce the enormous cost of eldercare service

An Architectural Framework for Collaboration of Heterogeneous Communication Devices Using WAP and Mobile Device Augmented(MDA)Gateway Integration

Within the last couple of years, the challenge of displaying collaborative multimedia information has become very important with the large diversity of communication devices such as Personal Computers, laptops, notebooks and handheld devices. The shared data and information may be presented with different views depending on the communication device used by a particular collaborator. The use of various web tools (HTML, WML etc) offers some solutions to the problem but if the target application requires more complex features such as rich multimedia data than is manageable using HTML or WML format, something else need to be done. In this paper, we propose a framework that integrates WAP and MDA Gateway to support collaboration among virtual teams and nomadic workers using heterogeneous communication devices. We then discuss an approach for augmenting mobile device small screen capabilities with surrounding large screen display device
