The biological transformation of added value is seen as one of the key aspects in applied research. Bio- inspired methods and technologies will affect factories of the future and enable them to cope with changing boundary conditions and the rising necessity of sustainability. This results in a higher demand for flexibility and transformation ability of the comprised production systems. To elaborate topics like these, Fraunhofer initiated strategic collaborative research projects. The current project aims at developing aspects of the biological transformation, whereof organic bio-inspired factories is one. Different research focal points were identified as enabling technologies on different levels of the well-established automation pyramid. The paper highlights the aspects “facility layout planning”, “behavioral modeling of production systems” and “skill-based controller programming” as enabling technologies. Solution approaches for the addressed aspects are discussed and future steps towards a flexible and sustainable production are shown

The correct plan layout and the effective control of inventories are logistical practices that increase the profits of companies and reduce operating costs. In the companies, Olito Editores and Olitocompu, opportunities for improvement were discovered for these aspects according to their importance within the company, due to the complexity of the plant infrastructure, the diversity of the products, the short delivery times. For this reason, a proposal for layout distribution and adaptation of inventory policies is made using genetic algorithm to improve the use of the spaces; all this accompanied by a deterministic model of discrete events before and after, which will make it possible to demonstrate the operation and the impact of the proposal.Ingeniero (a) IndustrialPregrad

This research discusses the redesign of facility layout on metal smelting SMEs that experienced changes in the type of products produced due to shifting consumer needs. Changes in the type of product produced affect the flow of the production process and result in decreased productivity. This study aims to redesign facilities adapted to the type of product produced. Re-layout processes using the conventional method is started by making the operation process chart, drawing the initial layout, and calculate the total moment of product using the From-to Chart (FTC). By using some trial obtained a trial layout that can increase the productivity based on the total moment of the product and the number of output that can be produced. This study also determines the Cost of Production (HPP) for all metal casting products and compares them with previous conditions. This study shows that by re-layout, the output will be greater and the cost of production is cheaper

Overview of Dynamic Facility Layout Planning as a Sustainability Strategy

[EN] The facility layout design problem is significantly relevant within the business operations strategies framework and has emerged as an alternate strategy towards supply chain sustainability. However, its wide coverage in the scientific literature has focused mainly on the static planning approach and disregarded the dynamic approach, which is very useful in real-world applications. In this context, the present article offers a literature review of the dynamic facility layout problem (DFLP). First, a taxonomy of the reviewed papers is proposed based on the problem formulation current trends (related to the problem type, planning phase, planning approach, number of facilities, number of floors, number of departments, space consideration, department shape, department dimensions, department area, and materials handling configuration); the mathematical modeling approach (regarding the type of model, type of objective function, type of constraints, nature of market demand, type of data, and distance metric), and the considered solution approach. Then, the extent to which recent research into DFLP has contributed to supply chain sustainability by addressing its three performance dimensions (economic, environmental, social) is described. Finally, some future research guidelines are provided. This research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities Project CADS4.0, grant number RTI2018-101344-B-I00; and the Valencian Community ERDF Programme 2014-2020, grant number IDIFEDER/2018/025.Pérez-Gosende, P.; Mula, J.; Díaz-Madroñero Boluda, FM. As more pressure is put on manufacturing companies to increase productivity and reduce waste as a means to remain competitive due to increased globalization and digitalization, many companies find themselves investing in their production systems, leading to changes in their existing factories and production systems. This process is usually performed with 2D CAD drawings and data of varying quality, leading to several challenges along the way. This longitudinal research follows up on eight years of industrial studies where researchers have applied 3D laser scanning and immersive virtual reality to improve the brownfield factory layout planning processes in real industrial scenarios, a novel approach in the research field. By interviewing key stakeholders at each company and analyzing the findings, challenges in data availability and accuracy of existing data, grasping scale and perspective, and challenges gathering input and communicating around planned changes are identified and shown to be substantially alleviated by the application of the technological tools and allowing more people to be part of the factory layout planning process. By using virtual engineering, industries can improve their brownfield factory layout planning process and take wellinformed decisions leading to sustainability benefits via fewer costly mistakes, improved employee engagement, and less need for travel

Planificación del layout para la fabricación de alimentos en la industria 4.0. Una revisión de literatura

The present research reports the analysis of studies published in the Scopus and Google Scholar databases between the years 2011 and 2020. The objective is to examine what new ways of planning facility design have been developed for food manufacturing for the fourth industrial generation. The theoretical justification for this research is that it is conducted for the purpose of confronting the theory of layout planning using the SLP with other existing ones. From a documentary, exploratory and systematized design, the results reveal that systematic layout planning (SLP) is maintained and that its application allows facilities for maintenance, better inventory management, cost reduction and sustainability in the food industry.La presente investigación reporta el análisis de estudios publicados en las bases de datos Scopus y Google Scholar entre los años 2011 y 2020. This work consists of a systematized review of the state of the art of reviews for the problem of Facility Layout Planning (FLP) within the Operations Management (OM) field to support the decisions taken for the improvement of the manufacturing and logistics in a factory environment. The first phase begins by defining the search strategies for obtaining the scientific literature, for which we used ten databases. With these, a base of 112 articles was obtained, but after the systematized process was reduced to 32 directly related articles. In the second phase, we executed a Dimensional analysis of these literature review articles employing a quantitative analysis of the sections and subsections of the selected articles. The third phase comprises the identification of gaps and future research lines. Finally, the conclusions obtained from the systematized review process are presented
