    Real-time signal detection and classification algorithms for body-centered systems

    El principal motivo por el cual los sistemas de comunicación en el entrono corporal se desean con el objetivo de poder obtener y procesar señales biométricas para monitorizar e incluso tratar una condición médica sea ésta causada por una enfermedad o el rendimiento de un atleta. Dado que la base de estos sistemas está en la sensorización y el procesado, los algoritmos de procesado de señal son una parte fundamental de los mismos. Esta tesis se centra en los algoritmos de tratamiento de señales en tiempo real que se utilizan tanto para monitorizar los parámetros como para obtener la información que resulta relevante de las señales obtenidas. En la primera parte se introduce los tipos de señales y sensores en los sistemas en el entrono corporal. A continuación se desarrollan dos aplicaciones concretas de los sistemas en el entorno corporal así como los algoritmos que en las mismas se utilizan. La primera aplicación es el control de glucosa en sangre en pacientes con diabetes. En esta parte se desarrolla un método de detección mediante clasificación de patronones de medidas erróneas obtenidas con el monitor contínuo comercial "Minimed CGMS". La segunda aplicacióin consiste en la monitorizacióni de señales neuronales. Descubrimientos recientes en este campo han demostrado enormes posibilidades terapéuticas (por ejemplo, pacientes con parálisis total que son capaces de comunicarse con el entrono gracias a la monitorizacióin e interpretación de señales provenientes de sus neuronas) y también de entretenimiento. En este trabajo, se han desarrollado algoritmos de detección, clasificación y compresión de impulsos neuronales y dichos algoritmos han sido evaluados junto con técnicas de transmisión inalámbricas que posibiliten una monitorización sin cables. Por último, se dedica un capítulo a la transmisión inalámbrica de señales en los sistemas en el entorno corporal.     An automobile was seen as a simple accessory of luxury in the early years of the past century. Therefore, it was an expensive asset which none of the common citizen could afford. It was necessary to pass a long period and waiting for Henry Ford to establish the first plants with the series fabrication. This new industrial paradigm makes easy to the common American to acquire an automobile, either for running away or for working purposes. Since that date, the automotive research grown exponentially to the levels observed in the actuality. Now, the automobiles are indispensable goods; saying with other words, the automobile is a first necessity article in a wide number of aspects of living: for workers to allow them to move from their homes into their workplaces, for transportation of students, for allowing the domestic women in their home tasks, for ambulances to carry people with decease to the hospitals, for transportation of materials, and so on, the list don’t ends. The new goal pursued by the automotive industry is to provide electric vehicles at low cost and with high reliability. This commitment is justified by the oil’s peak extraction on 50s of this century and also by the necessity to reduce the emissions of CO2 to the atmosphere, as well as to reduce the needs of this even more valuable natural resource. In order to achieve this task and to improve the regular cars based on oil, the automotive industry is even more concerned on doing applied research on technology and on fundamental research of new materials. The most important idea to retain from the previous introduction is to clarify the minds of the potential readers for the direct and indirect penetration of the vehicles and the vehicular industry in the today’s life. In this sequence of ideas, this book tries not only to fill a gap by presenting fresh subjects related to the vehicular technology and to the automotive engineering but to provide guidelines for future research.     Dispositivo de Deteção do Bruxismo do Sono

    This thesis aims to explore and, ultimately, develop a system capable of monitoring physiological signals to detect bruxism events. Bruxism is a disorder characterized by the habit of pressing and grinding the teeth. These events can either occur during the day (Awake Bruxism) or during the night (Sleep Bruxism). Studies suggest that 20% of the adult population suffer from Awake Bruxism, and 8-16% from Sleep Bruxism. The consequences of this disorder are several, ranging from tooth wear, dental fractures, or abfraction, resulting in headaches, or facial myalgia. This dissertation focuses on the Sleep Bruxism type since it’s harder to detect and treat. First, a study about the evolution of technology in healthcare is carried out, fundamentally about how it was introduced and how did it get to the point it is now. The topic of wearable devices is also explored, in the sense that it’s where the market is going and how these devices can transform healthcare. Then, the study converges on the devices developed especially for bruxism, namely which devices, and what type of techniques are used. Subsequently, the general concept for the system is elaborated, exploring several options both in terms of devices and physiological data to be parameterized. However, some restrictions exist for the construction of the system. For the construction of an intraoral system, the device has to be of small dimensions and with low energy consumption. With these constraints, the system has implemented an Inertial Measurement Unit to estimate the orientation of the patient’s sleeping position, and force sensors to measure the force exerted between the teeth. For compactness, a Systemon-Chip is used, since it includes an ARM Cortex M4 processor, several peripherals, and an RF transceiver in one package. The system is not only responsible for the data acquisition, but also the data transmission. This is accomplished by using Bluetooth Low Energy, which is one of the most common protocols for low-power devices. Customized service is developed for this purpose, consisting of three different characteristics: the force characteristic, the accelerometer characteristic, and the gyroscope characteristic. The reason is for maximizing efficiency. The last step was to develop the prototype, testing its functionalities and try to project next iterations of the prototype

    Wireless remote patient monitoring on general hospital wards.

    A novel approach which has potential to improve quality of patient care on general hospital wards is proposed. Patient care is a labour-intensive task that requires high input of human resources. A Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) system is proposed which can go some way towards improving patient monitoring on general hospital wards. In this system vital signs are gathered from patients and sent to a control unit for centralized monitoring. The RPM system can complement the role of nurses in monitoring patients’ vital signs. They will be able to focus on holistic needs of patients thereby providing better personal care. Wireless network technologies, ZigBee and Wi-Fi, are utilized for transmission of vital signs in the proposed RPM system. They provide flexibility and mobility to patients. A prototype system for RPM is designed and simulated. The results illustrated the capability, suitability and limitation of the chosen technology

    Biomedical and Human Factors Requirements for a Manned Earth Orbiting Station

    This report is the result of a study conducted by Republic Aviation Corporation in conjunction with Spacelabs, Inc.,in a team effort in which Republic Aviation Corporation was prime contractor. In order to determine the realistic engineering design requirements associated with the medical and human factors problems of a manned space station, an interdisciplinary team of personnel from the Research and Space Divisions was organized. This team included engineers, physicians, physiologists, psychologists, and physicists. Recognizing that the value of the study is dependent upon medical judgments as well as more quantifiable factors (such as design parameters) a group of highly qualified medical consultants participated in working sessions to determine which medical measurements are required to meet the objectives of the study. In addition, various Life Sciences personnel from NASA (Headquarters, Langley, MSC) participated in monthly review sessions. The organization, team members, consultants, and some of the part-time contributors are shown in Figure 1. This final report embodies contributions from all of these participants
