    Size reduction of low power electronic DC–DC converters is a topic of major interest for power electronics which requires the study and design of circuits and components working under redefined requirements. For this purpose, novel circuital topologies provide advantages in terms of power density increment, especially where a single chip design is feasible. These concepts have been applied to design and implement an integrated high step-down multiphase buck converter and to study the miniaturization of a stackable fiflyback architecture.     A four-beam optical polarimeter for robust particle shape detection

    Particle shape detection and measurement are important features in the more general field of particle analysis and characterisation. Knowledge of the particle shape is useful in a wide variety of industrial applications. Although it is often practically feasible to use imaging technologies for particle shape analysis, this is not often a sufficiently efficient method for widespread on-line or in situ applications. In many applications it would be sufficient to have an indicator of particle shape, in the same way that a turbidity sensor is an indicator of the amount of particles present. Scattered polarized light from individual particles will be shown as a useful tool for particle shape detection. In principle, the presence of non-spherical particles can be diagnosed by analysing the change in polarisation state following scattering and in particular exploiting a configuration in which spherical particles produce no such changes. The concerns of this thesis are the design and implementation of optical polarimeters for the detection of non-spheres in an aqueous suspension, with particular emphasis on a robust implementation.     Power Management Circuits for Energy Harvesting Applications

    Energy harvesting is the process of converting ambient available energy into usable electrical energy. Multiple types of sources are can be used to harness environmental energy: solar cells, kinetic transducers, thermal energy, and electromagnetic waves. This dissertation proposal focuses on the design of high efficiency, ultra-low power, power management units for DC energy harvesting sources. New architectures and design techniques are introduced to achieve high efficiency and performance while achieving maximum power extraction from the sources. The first part of the dissertation focuses on the application of inductive switching regulators and their use in energy harvesting applications. The second implements capacitive switching regulators to minimize the use of external components and present a minimal footprint solution for energy harvesting power management. Analysis and theoretical background for all switching regulators and linear regulators are described in detail. Both solutions demonstrate how low power, high efficiency design allows for a self-sustaining, operational device which can tackle the two main concerns for energy harvesting: maximum power extraction and voltage regulation. Furthermore, a practical demonstration with an Internet of Things type node is tested and positive results shown by a fully powered device from harvested energy.
