Survey of multi-function display and control technology

    Get PDF
The NASA orbiter spacecraft incorporates a complex array of systems, displays and controls. The incorporation of discrete dedicated controls into a multi-function display and control system (MFDCS) offers the potential for savings in weight, power, panel space and crew training time. The technology applicable to the development of a MFDCS for orbiter application is surveyed. Technology thought to be applicable presently or in the next five years is highlighted. Areas discussed include display media, data handling and processing, controls and operator interactions and the human factors considerations which are involved in a MFDCS design. Several examples of applicable MFDCS technology are described

Portable Computer Technology (PCT) Research and Development Program Phase 2

    Get PDF
The subject of this project report, focused on: (1) Design and development of two Advanced Portable Workstation 2 (APW 2) units. These units incorporate advanced technology features such as a low power Pentium processor, a high resolution color display, National Television Standards Committee (NTSC) video handling capabilities, a Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) interface, and Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) and ethernet interfaces. (2) Use these units to integrate and demonstrate advanced wireless network and portable video capabilities. (3) Qualification of the APW 2 systems for use in specific experiments aboard the Mir Space Station. A major objective of the PCT Phase 2 program was to help guide future choices in computing platforms and techniques for meeting National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) mission objectives. The focus being on the development of optimal configurations of computing hardware, software applications, and network technologies for use on NASA missions

Chitosan-zinc oxide composite for active food packaging Applications

    Get PDF
Chitosan-zinc oxide (C-ZnO) films were prepared by a simple one pot procedure. In order to investigate the property of C-ZnO films, two composite films were prepared by varying the loading of ZnO and compared with pure chitosan film (C). The films were character-ized by various techniques such as FTIR, DSC, tensile, contact angle and water vapour permeability. FTIR analysis showed changes in hydrogen bonds band at 3351 cm-1 compared to pure chitosan film. The incorporation of ZnO in chitosan films increased the contact angle by 30.5% in C-ZnO1.0 film while water vapour transmission rate decreased by 7.8% compared to C film. From the tensile test, C-ZnO0.5 and C-ZnO1.0 films were found to be much superior by 1.5 times and 2.5 times respectively compared to bare chitosan film. Larger inhibition ring (by 47%) was exhibited by C-ZnO1.0 as compared to C-ZnO0.5 when tested against S.aureus. From the results, it is displayed that the incorporation of zinc oxide to chitosan improve their properties which also shown the potential to become a candi-date for food active packaging

    Coaching tools for high-performance driving

    Get PDF
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2002.This project aimed to develop new tools to present and analyze data collected from race cars for the purpose of driver coaching. The tools developed are designed to quickly bring pertinent information to the surface and to further analyze the data for information that is not readily apparent. The working environment for the project was the Barber Dodge Pro Series, an entry-level professional racing series. A data viewer program called DataWizard was developed as a test-bed for new coaching tools, based on interviews, observations and feedback at Barber Dodge events. A method of track segmenting was developed as a new framework for organizing racecar data. Data from each lap is broken up by the section, turn, straight and brake zone, greatly improving the speed and ease of navigating though the data. A summary of vital statistics is created for each segment to bring key information to the surface. Two methods of displaying information about the driving line were also developed. One uses color overlaid on a track path to depict the path radius, the other method uses icons to mark turn-in, track-out and apex points along a track path. A racing GPS system was tested and suggestions are made as to how GPS data can be utilized along with data already commonly collected.by James Isaac Meyer.S.M
