    RSS-based Device-free Passive Detection and Localization using Home Automation Network Radio Frequencies

    This research provided a proof of concept for a device-free passive (DfP) system capable of detecting and localizing a target through exploitation of a home automation network’s radio frequency (RF) signals. The system was developed using Insteon devices with a 915 MHz center frequency. Without developer privileges, limitations of the Insteon technology like no intrinsic received signal strength (RSS) field and silent periods between messages were overcome by using software-defined radios to simulate Insteon devices capable of collecting and reporting RSS, and by creating a message generation script and implementing a calibrated filter threshold to reduce silent periods. Evaluation of the system deployment in a simple room with no furniture produced detection rates up to PD Æ 100% and false positive rates as low as PF Æ 1.6% for baseline threshold detection along the line of sight (LOS) in a simple tripwire setup. Signal attenuation of foam blocks at different distances along this LOS ranged from 2.2-4.4 dB. Cell-based fingerprinting for localization using multiple nodes in this room achieved accuracy only as high as PA Æ 5.4% and false positives only as low as PF Æ 88.3%. A context-based localization method was developed in response and was able to achieve PA Æ 28.3% and PF Æ 40.0%. The system was then deployed in a similar room containing several metal objects and achieved PA Æ 42.2% and PF Æ 0.0%. Deployment in a similar room with RF absorbent objects achieved PA Æ 23.3% and PF Æ 53.3%. Feasibility of exploiting RF of a home automation network for DfP indoor detection and localization was demonstrated. Despite not achieving optimal localization performance, the results showed promise for future DfP system deployment on top of home automation RF devices

    An Integrated Crop- and Soil-Based Strategy for Variable-Rate Nitrogen Management in Corn

    Nitrogen (N) management in cereal crops has been the subject of considerable research and debate for several decades. Historic N management practices have contributed to low nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). Low NUE can be caused by such things as poor synchronization between soil N supply and crop demand, uniform application rates of fertilizer N to spatially variable landscapes, and failure to account for temporally variable influences on soil N supply and crop N need. Active canopy reflectance sensors and management zones (MZ) have been studied separately as possible plant- and soil-based N management tools to increase NUE. Recently, some have suggested that the integration of these two approaches would provide a more robust N management strategy that could more effectively account for soil and plant effects on crop N need. For this reason, the goal of this research was to develop an N application strategy that would account for spatial variability in soil properties and use active canopy reflectance sensors to determine in-season, on-the-go N fertilizer rates, thereby increasing NUE and economic return for producers over current N management practices. To address this overall goal, a series of studies were conducted to better understand active canopy sensor use and explore the possibility of integrating spatial soil data with active canopy sensors. Sensor placement to assess crop N status was first examined. It was found that the greatest reduction in error over sensing each individual row for a hypothetical 24-row applicator was obtained with 2-3 sensors estimating an average chlorophyll index for the entire boom width. Next, use of active sensor-based soil organic matter (OM) estimation was compared to more conventional aerial image-based soil OM estimation. By adjusting regression intercept values for each field, OM could be predicted using either a single sensor or image data layer. The final study consisted of validation of the active sensor algorithm developed by Solari (2006), identification of soil variables for MZ delineation, and the possible integration of MZ and active sensors for N application. Crop response (sensor measured sufficiency index and yield) had the highest correlation with soil optical reflectance readings in sandy fields and with apparent soil electrical conductivity in silt loam fields with eroded slopes. Therefore, using these soil variables to delineate MZ allowed characterization of spatial patterns in both in-season crop response (sufficiency index) and yield. Compared to uniform N application, integrating MZ and sensor-based N application resulted in substantial N savings (~40-120 kg ha-1) and increases in partial factor productivity (~13-75 kg grain (kg N applied)-1) for fine-textured soils with eroded slopes. However, for coarser texture soils the current sensor-based N application algorithm may require further calibration, and for fields with no spatial variability there appears to be no benefit to using the algorithm. Collectively, results from these studies show promise for integrating active sensor-based N application and static soil-based MZ to increase NUE and economic return for producers over current N management strategies, but further research is needed to explore how best to integrate these two N management strategies

    The always best positioned paradigm for mobile indoor applications

    In this dissertation, methods for personal positioning in outdoor and indoor environments are investigated. The Always Best Positioned paradigm, which has the goal of providing a preferably consistent self-positioning, will be defined. Furthermore, the localization toolkit LOCATO will be presented, which allows to easily realize positioning systems that follow the paradigm. New algorithms were developed, which particularly address the robustness of positioning systems with respect to the Always Best Positioned paradigm. With the help of this toolkit, three example positioning-systems were implemented, each designed for different applications and requirements: a low-cost system, which can be used in conjunction with user-adaptive public displays, a so-called opportunistic system, which enables positioning with room-level accuracy in any building that provides a WiFi infrastructure, and a high-accuracy system for instrumented environments, which works with active RFID tags and infrared beacons. Furthermore, a new and unique evaluation-method for positioning systems is presented, which uses step-accurate natural walking-traces as ground truth. Finally, six location based services will be presented, which were realized either with the tools provided by LOCATO or with one of the example positioning-systems.In dieser Doktorarbeit werden Methoden zur Personenpositionierung im Innen- und Außenbereich von Gebäuden untersucht. Es wird das ,,Always Best Positioned” Paradigma definiert, welches eine möglichst lückenlose Selbstpositionierung zum Ziel hat. Weiterhin wird die Lokalisierungsplattform LOCATO vorgestellt, welche eine einfache Umsetzung von Positionierungssystemen ermöglicht. Hierzu wurden neue Algorithmen entwickelt, welche gezielt die Robustheit von Positionierungssystemen unter Berücksichtigung des ,,Always Best Positioned” Paradigmas angehen. Mit Hilfe dieser Plattform wurden drei Beispiel Positionierungssysteme entwickelt, welche unterschiedliche Einsatzgebiete berücksichtigen: Ein kostengünstiges System, das im Zusammenhang mit benutzeradaptiven öffentlichen Bildschirmen benutzt werden kann; ein sogenanntes opportunistisches Positionierungssystem, welches eine raumgenaue Positionierung in allen Gebäuden mit WLAN-Infrastruktur ermöglicht, sowie ein metergenaues Positionierungssystem, welches mit Hilfe einer Instrumentierung aus aktiven RFID-Tags und Infrarot-Baken arbeitet. Weiterhin wird erstmalig eine Positionierungsevaluation vorgestellt, welche schrittgenaue, natürliche Bewegungspfade als Referenzsystem einsetzt. Im Abschluss werden 6 lokationsbasierte Dienste vorgestellt, welche entweder mit Hilfe von LOCATO oder mit Hilfe einer der drei Beispiel-Positionierungssysteme entwickelt wurden
