    Machine learning and its applications in reliability analysis systems

    In this thesis, we are interested in exploring some aspects of Machine Learning (ML) and its application in the Reliability Analysis systems (RAs). We begin by investigating some ML paradigms and their- techniques, go on to discuss the possible applications of ML in improving RAs performance, and lastly give guidelines of the architecture of learning RAs. Our survey of ML covers both levels of Neural Network learning and Symbolic learning. In symbolic process learning, five types of learning and their applications are discussed: rote learning, learning from instruction, learning from analogy, learning from examples, and learning from observation and discovery. The Reliability Analysis systems (RAs) presented in this thesis are mainly designed for maintaining plant safety supported by two functions: risk analysis function, i.e., failure mode effect analysis (FMEA) ; and diagnosis function, i.e., real-time fault location (RTFL). Three approaches have been discussed in creating the RAs. According to the result of our survey, we suggest currently the best design of RAs is to embed model-based RAs, i.e., MORA (as software) in a neural network based computer system (as hardware). However, there are still some improvement which can be made through the applications of Machine Learning. By implanting the 'learning element', the MORA will become learning MORA (La MORA) system, a learning Reliability Analysis system with the power of automatic knowledge acquisition and inconsistency checking, and more.     The place of expert systems in a typology of information systems

    This article considers definitions and claims of Expert Systems ( ES) and analyzes them in view of traditional Information systems (IS). It is argued that the valid specifications for ES do not differ fran those for IS. Consequently the theoretical study and the practical development of ES should not be a monodiscipline. Integration of ES development in classical mathematics and computer science opens the door to existing knowledge and experience. Aspects of existing ES are reviewed from this interdisciplinary point of view

    Error by design: Methods for predicting device usability

    This paper introduces the idea of predicting ‘designer error’ by evaluating devices using Human Error Identification (HEI) techniques. This is demonstrated using Systematic Human Error Reduction and Prediction Approach (SHERPA) and Task Analysis For Error Identification (TAFEI) to evaluate a vending machine. Appraisal criteria which rely upon user opinion, face validity and utilisation are questioned. Instead a quantitative approach, based upon signal detection theory, is recommended. The performance of people using SHERPA and TAFEI are compared with heuristic judgement and each other. The results of these studies show that both SHERPA and TAFEI are better at predicting errors than the heuristic technique. The performance of SHERPA and TAFEI are comparable, giving some confidence in the use of these approaches. It is suggested that using HEI techniques as part of the design and evaluation process could help to make devices easier to use

Background: Automation-related complacency and automation bias have typically been considered separately and independently. Methods: Studies on complacency and automation bias were analyzed with respect to the cognitive processes involved. Results: Automation complacency occurs under conditions of multiple-task load, when manual tasks compete with the automated task for the operator’s attention. Automation complacency is found in both naive and expert participants and cannot be overcome with simple practice. Automation bias results in making both omission and commission errors when decision aids are imperfect.Automation bias occurs in both naive and expert participants, cannot be prevented by training or instructions, and can affect decision making in individuals as well as in teams.While automation bias has been conceived of as a special case of decision bias, our analysis suggests that it also depends on attentional processes similar to those involved in automation-related complacency. Conclusion: Complacency and automation bias represent different manifestations of overlapping automation-induced phenomena, with attention playing a central role. An integrated model of complacency and automation bias shows that they result from the dynamic interaction of personal, situational, and automation-related characteristics. Application: The integrated model and attentional synthesis provides a heuristic framework for further research on complacency and automation bias and design options for mitigating such effects in automated and decision support systems

    Keberkesanan modul infusi kemahiran berfikir aras tinggi pembelajaran luar bilik darjah (iKBAT-PLBD) bagi bidang pembelajaran sukatan dan geometri

    Kemahiran berfikir aras tinggi (KBAT) merupakan satu kemahiran berfikir yang sangat diperlukan dalam mendepani cabaran kehidupan masa kini terutama dalam bidang matematik. Oleh itu, kajian ini dijalankan untuk mengkaji sama ada KBAT matematik pelajar dapat ditingkatkan dengan menggunakan modul infusi Kemahiran Berfikir Aras Tinggi - Pembelajaran Luar Bilik Darjah (iKBAT–PLBD) atau tidak? Justeru itu, satu kerangka perancangan telah dibuat terhadap empat kemahiran tertinggi dalam Taksonomi Bloom semakan semula yang juga merupakan konstruk utama dalam KBAT. Konstruk KBAT tersebut ialah konstruk menganlisis, mengaplikasi menilai dan mencipta. Sampel kajian ini melibatkan 120 pelajar tingkatan 1 di empat buah sekolah yang berbeza di negeri Johor. Dalam menjalankan kajian kuasi eksperimental ini, data dikumpul melalui kajian keputusan ujian pra dan ujian pos sebelum dan selepas menggunakan modul bagi kumpulan rawatan. Manakala pendekatan PdP tradisional pula digunakan bagi kumpulan kawalan. Hasil daripada analisis data menunjukkan bahawa aktiviti pembelajaran dan pemudahcaraan (PdPc) yang bertunjangkan modul iKBAT–PLBD telah dapat meningkatkan penguasaan matematik pelajar dalam kempat-empat tahap KBAT serta bagi keseluruhan tahap. Dapatan kajian ini menunjukkan terdapat perbezaan yang signifikasi antara kumpulan kawalan dan kumpulan rawatan terhadap peningkatan KBAT pelajar dalam matematik dengan menggunakan pendekatan iKBAT–PLBD bagi tahap mengaplikasi, menganalisis, menilai, mencipta juga secara keseluruhan. Kesimpulannya, kajian ini dapat memberi manfaat kepada semua pihak termasuk pihak Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia (KPM), pihak pentadbiran sekolah, ibubapa, guru matematik malah bagi pelajar itu dari segi pengubalan dasar yang berkaitan, pengaplikasian dan sebagai satu bukti keberkesanan dalam proses pemerkasaan KBAT matematik di Malaysia

    Knowledge-based diagnosis for aerospace systems

    The need for automated diagnosis in aerospace systems and the approach of using knowledge-based systems are examined. Research issues in knowledge-based diagnosis which are important for aerospace applications are treated along with a review of recent relevant research developments in Artificial Intelligence. The design and operation of some existing knowledge-based diagnosis systems are described. The systems described and compared include the LES expert system for liquid oxygen loading at NASA Kennedy Space Center, the FAITH diagnosis system developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the PES procedural expert system developed at SRI International, the CSRL approach developed at Ohio State University, the StarPlan system developed by Ford Aerospace, the IDM integrated diagnostic model, and the DRAPhys diagnostic system developed at NASA Langley Research Center

    Expert systems and finite element structural analysis - a review

    Finite element analysis of many engineering systems is practised more as an art than as a science . It involves high level expertise (analytical as well as heuristic) regarding problem modelling (e .g. problem specification,13; choosing the appropriate type of elements etc .), optical mesh design for achieving the specified accuracy (e .g . initial mesh selection, adaptive mesh refinement), selection of the appropriate type of analysis and solution13; routines and, finally, diagnosis of the finite element solutions . Very often such expertise is highly dispersed and is not available at a single place with a single expert. The design of an expert system, such that the necessary expertise is available to a novice to perform the same job even in the absence of trained experts, becomes an attractive proposition. 13; In this paper, the areas of finite element structural analysis which require experience and decision-making capabilities are explored . A simple expert system, with a feasible knowledge base for problem modelling, optimal mesh design, type of analysis and solution routines, and diagnosis, is outlined. Several efforts in these directions, reported in the open literature, are also reviewed in this paper

    Heuristic usability evaluation on games: a modular approach

    Heuristic evaluation is the preferred method to assess usability in games when experts conduct this evaluation. Many heuristics guidelines have been proposed attending to specificities of games but they only focus on specific subsets of games or platforms. In fact, to date the most used guideline to evaluate games usability is still Nielsen’s proposal, which is focused on generic software. As a result, most evaluations do not cover important aspects in games such as mobility, multiplayer interactions, enjoyability and playability, etc. To promote the usage of new heuristics adapted to different game and platform aspects we propose a modular approach based on the classification of existing game heuristics using metadata and a tool, MUSE (Meta-heUristics uSability Evaluation tool) for games, which allows a rebuild of heuristic guidelines based on metadata selection in order to obtain a customized list for every real evaluation case. The usage of these new rebuilt heuristic guidelines allows an explicit attendance to a wide range of usability aspects in games and a better detection of usability issues. We preliminarily evaluate MUSE with an analysis of two different games, using both the Nielsen’s heuristics and the customized heuristic lists generated by our tool.Unión Europea PI055-15/E0
