    Smart Wireless Sensor Networks

    The recent development of communication and sensor technology results in the growth of a new attractive and challenging area - wireless sensor networks (WSNs). A wireless sensor network which consists of a large number of sensor nodes is deployed in environmental fields to serve various applications. Facilitated with the ability of wireless communication and intelligent computation, these nodes become smart sensors which do not only perceive ambient physical parameters but also be able to process information, cooperate with each other and self-organize into the network. These new features assist the sensor nodes as well as the network to operate more efficiently in terms of both data acquisition and energy consumption. Special purposes of the applications require design and operation of WSNs different from conventional networks such as the internet. The network design must take into account of the objectives of specific applications. The nature of deployed environment must be considered. The limited of sensor nodes� resources such as memory, computational ability, communication bandwidth and energy source are the challenges in network design. A smart wireless sensor network must be able to deal with these constraints as well as to guarantee the connectivity, coverage, reliability and security of network's operation for a maximized lifetime. This book discusses various aspects of designing such smart wireless sensor networks. Main topics includes: design methodologies, network protocols and algorithms, quality of service management, coverage optimization, time synchronization and security techniques for sensor networks

Isto representa no total: - 19 aplicações qualificadas, - 33 servidores administradosAbstract 2 Underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) are becoming popular due to their important role in different applications, such as offshore search and underwater monitoring. However, the data transmission in this underwater environment is impacted by various aspects such as bandwidth usage limitation, surrounding noise and large acoustic propagation delays. Therefore, communication itself is an outstanding challenge. The well-known traditional transmission control protocol (TCP), one of the most used transport protocol on the internet, is not suitable to enable this technology. Even though TCP variants for the wireless network are not foolproof in an underwater environment, their use could probably be more difficult in such a multi-hop communication system. We have chosen Newreno for our study. This variant is a modern implementation that includes the four congestion control algorithms. These algorithms have proved to be effective when it comes to terrestrial networks which could be a basis for our study. In addition, Newreno is known for its algorithm of recovery of several segments lost within the same sending window. In this dissertation, we have conducted a general study of UWSN technology and examined methods to improve TCP performance in a multi-hop UWSN. And then, we propose Underwater-Newreno (U-Newreno) our enhanced version of Newreno to improve TCP performance in UWSN. U-Newreno consists of two major modifications: controlling the maximum size of the congestion window and the adaptation of the round trip time (RTT) timeout. The results of simulations carried out with the Aquasim simulator show improvements of performances in terms of gain of: packets delivery Retransmission ratio of packets delivery.Resumo 2 As redes de sensores sem fio subaquáticos (Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks- UWSN) estão-se a tornar cada vez mais populares devido à sua importância em diferentes aplicações, como a pesquisa offshore e monitoramento subaquático. No entanto, a transmissão de dados neste ambiente subaquático sofre devido a vários factores, como a limitação do uso da largura de banda, o ruído envolvente e grandes atrasos de propagação acústica. Portanto, a comunicação é um desafio problemático. O familiar transmission control protocol (TCP) tradicional, um dos protocolos de transporte mais utilizados na internet, não é adequado para habilitar esta tecnologia. Mesmo que as variantes TCP para a rede sem fio não sejam infalíveis num ambiente subaquático, o seu uso provavelmente pode ser mais difícil num sistema de comunicação de múltiplos saltos. Nós escolhemos o Newreno para o nosso estudo. Esta variante é uma implementação moderna que inclui os quatro algoritmos de controle de congestionamento. Estes algoritmos demonstraram a sua eficácia em redes terrestres que poderiam ser uma base para o nosso estudo. Além disso, Newreno é conhecido pelo seu algoritmo de recuperação de vários segmentos perdidos dentro da mesma janela de envio. Nesta dissertação, realizamos um estudo geral da tecnologia UWSN e examinamos métodos para melhorar o desempenho do TCP num UWSN de vários saltos. E então, propomos a U-Newreno (Underwater-Newreno), a nossa versão melhorada do Newreno para melhorar o desempenho do TCP no UWSN. O U-Newreno consiste em duas modificações principais: controlar o tamanho máximo da janela de congestionamento e a adaptação do tempo limite “Round Trip Time”(RTT). Os resultados das simulações realizadas com o simulador Aquasim mostram melhorias nos desempenhos em termos de ganho de: • entrega de pacotes • Taxa de retransmissão da entrega de pacotes

In this 5th edition of the electronic conference, contributors were invited to provide papers and presentations from the field of sensors and applications at large, resulting in a wide variety of excellent submissions and topic areas. Papers which attracted the most interest on the web or that provided a particularly innovative contribution were selected for publication in this collection.     Quantum Communication Systems: Vision, Protocols, Applications, and Challenges

    The growth of modern technological sectors have risen to such a spectacular level that the blessings of technology have spread to every corner of the world, even to remote corners. At present, technological development finds its basis in the theoretical foundation of classical physics in every field of scientific research, such as wireless communication, visible light communication, machine learning, and computing. The performance of the conventional communication systems is becoming almost saturated due to the usage of bits. The usage of quantum bits in communication technology has already surpassed the limits of existing technologies and revealed to us a new path in developing technological sectors. Implementation of quantum technology over existing system infrastructure not only provides better performance but also keeps the system secure and reliable. This technology is very promising for future communication systems. This review article describes the fundamentals of quantum communication, vision, design goals, information processing, and protocols. Besides, quantum communication architecture is also proposed here. This research included and explained the prospective applications of quantum technology over existing technological systems, along with the potential challenges of obtaining the goal.Comment: 23 pages, 11 Figure

    Characterisation of long-range horizontal performance of underwater acoustic communication

    Underwater acoustic communication is a rapidly progressing field of technology, largely due to recent advances in low cost and power efficient digital signal processors. Unfortunately, the unpredictable and time varying physical properties of the underwater acoustic channel reduce communication reliability over long ranges. This study sought to characterise the performance of horizontal underwater acoustic data communication in various scenarios with particular application to subsea monitoring and control systems.To fulfil the experimental needs, two custom-built high frequency ambient noise recorder and modem control units were developed to operate with commercial underwater acoustic modems. Additionally, an underwater acoustic communication simulator based on the Bellhop propagation model was developed for Matlab, capable of producing performance predictions in both spatial and temporal studies. A series of short-term trials were conducted to determine the limitations of modem performance over different ranges. These trials included shallow water studies off the coast of Perth, Western Australia (D < 30 m), and a French deep water trial (D ≤ 1000 m) which used stand-alone modems. Experimental findings were compared to predictions obtained using two-dimensional range-depth performance simulations.A long-term investigation of the environmental influences on modem reliability was carried out off the coast of Perth in approximately 100 m of water. This involved simultaneously collecting environmental and modem performance data for over 16 days. The signal to noise ratio remained high for the duration of the trial so modem performance fluctuations could be attributed to changes in channel propagation. Using multiple linear regression, the measured environmental parameters were correlated with the observed modem performance and their contributions to an overall fitting curve were calculated. It was determined that the sound speed profile, in addition to the sea surface roughness, contributed strongly to the fitting curve, with a weaker contribution from the measured signal to noise ratio. This result was confirmed by performing temporal simulations which incorporated more detailed time-dependant environmental parameters. By progressively adding more parameters to the simulator including ambient noise, wave height and the sound speed profile, simulations provided more accurate predictions of the observed performanceOverall, the horizontal performance of underwater acoustic communication was characterised in several scenarios from a series of experimental and numerical investigations. Additionally, the developed simulator was shown to be an effective and flexible tool for predicting the performance of an underwater acoustic communication system. The results and tools discussed in this thesis provide an extensive investigation into the factors influencing horizontal underwater acoustic communication. The analysis demonstrates that whilst underwater acoustic communication can be effective, it is not yet a viable alternative to cabled telemetry for long-range subsea monitoring and control applications, where reliability is crucial. Underwater acoustic communication would best be suited as a non-critical or backup method for continuous monitoring systems until channel prediction and equalisation techniques are further refined

    On the Road to 6G: Visions, Requirements, Key Technologies and Testbeds

    Fifth generation (5G) mobile communication systems have entered the stage of commercial development, providing users with new services and improved user experiences as well as offering a host of novel opportunities to various industries. However, 5G still faces many challenges. To address these challenges, international industrial, academic, and standards organizations have commenced research on sixth generation (6G) wireless communication systems. A series of white papers and survey papers have been published, which aim to define 6G in terms of requirements, application scenarios, key technologies, etc. Although ITU-R has been working on the 6G vision and it is expected to reach a consensus on what 6G will be by mid-2023, the related global discussions are still wide open and the existing literature has identified numerous open issues. This paper first provides a comprehensive portrayal of the 6G vision, technical requirements, and application scenarios, covering the current common understanding of 6G. Then, a critical appraisal of the 6G network architecture and key technologies is presented. Furthermore, existing testbeds and advanced 6G verification platforms are detailed for the first time. In addition, future research directions and open challenges are identified for stimulating the on-going global debate. Finally, lessons learned to date concerning 6G networks are discussed

    NPS AUV Integrated Simulation

    The development and testing of Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) hardware and software is greatly complicated by vehicle inaccessibility during operation. Integrated simulation remotely links vehicle components and support equipment with graphics simulation workstations, allowing complete real-time, pre-mission, pseudo-mission and post-mission visualization and analysis in the lab environment. Integrated simulator testing of software and hardware is a broad and versatile method that supports rapid and robust diagnosis and correction of system faults. This method is demonstrated using the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) AUV. High-resolution three-dimensional graphics workstations can provide real-time representations of vehicle dynamics, control system behavior, mission execution, sensor processing and object classification. Integrated simulation is also useful for development of the variety of sophisticated artificial intelligence applications needed by an AUV. Examples include sonar classification using an expert system and path planning using a circle world model. The flexibility and versatility provided by this approach enables visualization and analysis of all aspects of AUV development.
