MEMS piezoelectric vibrational energy harvesters and circuits for IoT applications
In the Internet of Things (IoT) world, more and more sensor nodes are being deployed and more mobile power sources are required. Alternative solutions to batteries are the subjects of worldwide extended research. Among the possibilities is the harvesting of energy from the ambient. A novel energy harvesting system to power wireless sensor nodes is a necessity and inevitable path, with more and more market interest.
Microelectromechnaical systems (MEMS) based piezoelectric vibrational energy harvesters (PVEH) are considered in this thesis due to their good energy densities, conversion efficiency, suitability for miniaturization and CMOS integration. Cantilever beams are favored for their relatively high average strains, low frequencies and simplicity of fabrication. Proof masses are essential in micro scale devices in order to decrease the resonance frequency and increase the strain along the beam to increase the output power. In this thesis, the effects of proof mass geometry on piezoelectric vibration energy harvesters are studied. Different geometrical dimension ratios have significant impact on the resonance frequency, e.g., beam to mass lengths, and beam to mass widths. The responses of various prototypes are studied. Furthermore, the impact of geometry on the performance of cantilever-based PVEH is investigated. Namely, rectangular and trapezoidal T-shaped designs are fabricated and tested. Optimized cross-shaped geometries are fabricated using a commercial technology PiezoMUMPs process from MEMSCAP. They are characterized for their resonant frequency, strain distribution and output power.
The output of an energy harvester is not directly suited as a power supply for circuits because of variations in its power and voltage over time, therefore a power management circuit is required. The circuit meets the requirements of responding to an input voltage that varies with the ambient conditions to generate a regulated output voltage, and the ability to power multiple outputs from a fixed input voltage. In this thesis, new design architectures for a reconfigurable circuit are considered. A charge pump which modifies dynamically the number of stages to generate a plurality of voltage levels has been designed and fabricated using a CMOS 0.13 μm technology. This provides biasing voltages for electrostatic MEMS devices. Electrostatic MEMS require relatively high and variable actuation voltages and the fabricated circuit serves this goal and attains a measured maximum output voltage of 10.1 V from a 1.2 V supply.
In this thesis, design recommendations are given and MEMS piezoelectric harvesters are implemented and validated through fabrications. T-shaped harvesters bring improvements over cantilever designs, namely the trapezoidal T-shaped structures. A cross-shaped design has the advantage of utilizing four beams and the proposed proof mass improves the performance significantly. A cross-coupled circuit rectifies the output efficiently towards an optimal energy harvesting solution

The aim of this Special Issue is to explore new advanced solutions in electronic systems and interfaces to be employed in sensors, describing best practices, implementations, and applications. The selected papers in particular concern photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) and silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) interfaces and applications, techniques for monitoring radiation levels, electronics for biomedical applications, design and applications of time-to-digital converters, interfaces for image sensors, and general-purpose theory and topologies for electronic interfaces
State of the Art: Small Spacecraft Technology
This report provides an overview of the current state-of-the-art of small spacecraft technology, with particular emphasis placed on the state-of-the-art of CubeSat-related technology. It was first commissioned by NASAs Small Spacecraft Technology Program (SSTP) in mid-2013 in response to the rapid growth in interest in using small spacecraft for many types of missions in Earth orbit and beyond, and was revised in mid-2015 and 2018. This work was funded by the Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD). For the sake of this assessment, small spacecraft are defined to be spacecraft with a mass less than 180 kg. This report provides a summary of the state-of-the-art for each of the following small spacecraft technology domains: Complete Spacecraft, Power, Propulsion, Guidance Navigation and Control, Structures, Materials and Mechanisms, Thermal Control, Command and Data Handling, Communications, Integration, Launch and Deployment, Ground Data Systems and Operations, and Passive Deorbit Devices
A reconfigurable charge pump in 0.13 μm CMOS for agile MEMS actuation
An 8 stage reconfigurable charge pump is presented for MEMS electrostatic actuation. The circuit attains a simulated output voltage of 10.62 V from a 1.2 V supply with digitally programmable voltage levels. Reduced power consumption is achieved using a variable frequency clock. The charge pump exhibits a short rise time of 1.56 μs with a 50 MHz clock and 1 pF load. The circuit is designed in 0.13 μm CMOS technology and has a compact area of 215 μm × 300 μm

Online learning of physics during a pandemic: A report from an academic experience in Italy
The arrival of the Sars-Cov II has opened a new window on teaching physics in academia.
Frontal lectures have left space for online teaching, teachers have been faced with a new way
of spreading knowledge, adapting contents and modalities of their courses. Students have
faced up with a new way of learning physics, which relies on free access to materials and
their informatics knowledge. We decided to investigate how online didactics has influenced
students’ assessments, motivation, and satisfaction in learning physics during the pandemic
in 2020. The research has involved bachelor (n = 53) and master (n = 27) students of
the Physics Department at the University of Cagliari (N = 80, 47 male; 33 female). The
MANOVA supported significant mean differences about gender and university level with
higher values for girls and master students in almost all variables investigated. The path
analysis showed that student-student, student-teacher interaction, and the organization of
the courses significantly influenced satisfaction and motivation in learning physics. The
results of this study can be used to improve the standards of teaching in physics at the
University of Cagliar
Optimization of Operation Sequencing in CAPP Using Hybrid Genetic Algorithm and Simulated Annealing Approach
In any CAPP system, one of the most important process planning functions is selection of the operations and corresponding machines in order to generate the optimal operation sequence. In this paper, the hybrid GA-SA algorithm is used to solve this combinatorial optimization NP (Non-deterministic Polynomial) problem. The network representation is adopted to describe operation and sequencing flexibility in process planning and the mathematical model for process planning is described with the objective of minimizing the production time. Experimental results show effectiveness of the hybrid algorithm that, in comparison with the GA and SA standalone algorithms, gives optimal operation sequence with lesser computational time and lesser number of iterations

Autonomous Navigation of Automated Guided Vehicle Using Monocular Camera
This paper presents a hybrid control algorithm for Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) consisting of two independent control loops: Position Based Control (PBC) for global navigation within manufacturing environment and Image Based Visual Servoing (IBVS) for fine motions needed for accurate steering towards loading/unloading point. The proposed hybrid control separates the initial transportation task into global navigation towards the goal point, and fine motion from the goal point to the loading/unloading point. In this manner, the need for artificial landmarks or accurate map of the environment is bypassed. Initial experimental results show the usefulness of the proposed approach.COBISS.SR-ID 27383808
