This thesis describes research undertaken into the application of software product line approaches to the development of high-integrity, embedded real-time software systems that are subject to regulatory approval/certification. The motivation for the research arose from a real business need to reduce cost and lead time of aerospace software development projects. The thesis hypothesis can be summarised as follows: It is feasible to construct product line models that allow the specification of required behaviour within a reference architecture that can be transformed into an effective product implementation, whilst enabling suitable supporting evidence for certification to be produced. The research concentrates on the following four main areas: 1. Construction of an argument framework in which the application of product line techniques to high-integrity software development can be assessed and critically reviewed. 2. Definition of a product-line reference architecture that can host components containing variation. 3. Design of model transformations that can automatically instantiate products from a set of components hosted within the reference architecture. 4. Identification of verification approaches that may provide evidence that the transformations designed in step 3 above preserve properties of interest from the product line model into the product instantiations. Together, these areas form the basis of an approach we term “Trusted Product Lines”. The approach has been evaluated and validated by deployment on a real aerospace project; the approach has been used to produce DO-178B/ED-12B Level A applications of over 300 KSLOC in size. The effect of this approach on the software development process has been critically evaluated in this thesis, both quantitatively (in terms of cost and relative size of process phases) and qualitatively (in terms of software quality). The “Trusted Product Lines” approach, as described within the thesis, shows how product line approaches can be applied to high-integrity software development, and how certification evidence created and arguments constructed for products instantiated from the product line. To the best of our knowledge, the development and effective application of product line techniques in a certification environment is novel and unique

How can Software Packages Certification Improve Software Process

Popular software assessment models such as CMM, BOOTSTRAP, SPICE or ISO 9000 ignore the impact of software product certification on software quality. The first standard for software product quality was German DIN 66285. Based on this standard, the ISO developed a international standard for quality requirements and testing procedures for software packages: ISO/IEC 12119. This paper presents our experience with classical testing models based on ISO/IEC 12119 and DIN 66285 and with our improved model, called the cooperative model of testing. With this model we can achieve improvements in testing of efficiency and software production process. Practical experience shows that the roles of all parties in the testing process have changed. Knowledge transfer between the testing laboratory and supplier depends on supplier\u27s maturity level

How to increase efficiency with the certification of process compliance

Certification as well as self-assessment of safety-critical systems is an expensive and time-consuming activity due to the necessity of providing numerous deliverables. These deliverables can be process-related or product-related. Process-related deliverables are aimed at showing compliance with normative documents (e.g., safety standards), which impose specific requirements on the development process (e.g., reference models for the safety life-cycles). In this lecture, we limit our attention to process-related deliverables and we propose a solution aimed at reducing time and cost related to their provision. Our solution consists of the combination of three approaches: the safety-oriented process line engineering approach, the process-based argumentation line approach, and the model driven certification-oriented approach. More specifically, we define how these three approaches are combined and which techniques, tools and guidelines should be used to implement the resulting approach. Then, via small-sized but realistic process-fragments, we illustrate it. Finally, we present a roadmap for future research directions.Universidad de Málaga. The Institute of Home Affairs Governance (IPDN) has been conducting competency certification for prospective graduates since 2020. However, one of the major issues encountered was the lack of accreditation and coordination with the National Agency of Profession Certification (BNSP) or a Professional Certification Institute (LSP). Therefore, it is crucial to evaluate the implementation of competency certification for prospective IPDN graduates from 2020 to 2022. This study assessed the context, input, process, and product aspects of the certification process using an evaluative approach using the CIPP model and quantitative descriptive methods. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and documentation analysis. The analysis utilized the CIPP evaluation model, which encompassed the context, input, process, and product dimensions. The findings indicate that the overall evaluation of the implementation of competency certification for prospective IPDN graduates from 2020 to 2022 falls under the non-conforming criteria. Specifically, the context dimension is strongly appropriate, while the input and process dimensions are deemed not Appropriate, and the product dimension is strongly inappropriate. It is important to note that the implementation of competency certification for prospective IPDN graduates in this period lacks legal validity as it does not align with BNSP coordination. To address these issues, it is recommended that IPDN promptly establishes an LSP as a BNSP-certified educational institution and enhances the competence and number of BNSP-licensed assessors based on the specific needs of each Study Program. In the meantime, competency certification for prospective IPDN graduates can be conducted through a selection system. &nbsp

The development of pragmatic quality model for software product certification process

    Get PDF
The emergence of Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) in Malaysia in 1996 was the starting point for the blooming of software and ICT related companies. Despite that, not much attention was given to the quality of the software product that was being developed by different categories of companies. These companies could not justify the quality of their products to the users and the users are left with uncertainties on the quality of the software. Our previous survey identified the need for independent software assessment and certification. Therefore, we propose a conceptual model of software certification process by product quality approach. It is designed to be applied by an independent certification body or any appointed institution. The main focus of this paper is the development of pragmatic quality model that will be applied in the certification process

The policies regarding Halal product guarantees are regulated in Law Number 33 of 2014. This Law aims to provide legal certainty regarding the halalness of a product circulating in public. In addition, it also created a sense of security and a sense of public trust in the products. Banten, which is well-known as one of the religious provinces, is also a benchmark for how the public has sufficient awareness and knowledge of the implementation of Halal Product Assurance (JPH) for products circulating in the market. This research is aimed to find out and analyze how the Implementation of Law Number 33 of 2014 concerning Guarantees for Halal Products (Studies on Implementation of Guarantees for Halal Products in Banten). The qualitative method was used in collecting data. The results of the research using the Edward III policy implementation model approach show that the implementation of Law Number 33 of 2014 concerning Halal Product Assurance (Study on the Implementation of Halal Product Guarantees in Banten) is still not going well. First, there is still confusion from businessmen in the flow of the halal certification registration process which is currently undergoing a transition period from LPPOM MUI to BPJPH. Second, there is no BPJPH organizational structure in the regions so it is currently under the Ministry of Religion in each province. Third, the regular Halal certification fee is quite expensive and affects the number of applicants for Halal certification. Forth, most Muslim communities do not know that Halal food products are not only strictly consuming pork and its derivatives. But it must be seen from the production process from upstream to downstream. Keywords: Public Policy Implementation, Law on Guarantees of  Halal Products, Halal Certification

Some consumers derive utility from using products produced with specific processes, such as environmentally friendly practices. Means of verifying these credence attributes, such as certification, are necessary for the market to function effectively. A substitute or complementary solution may exist when consumers perceive a relationship between a process attribute and other verifiable product attributes. We present a model where the level of search and experience attributes influences the likelihood of production of eco-friendly products. Our results suggest that the market success of eco-friendly food products requires a mix of environmental and other verifiable attributes that together signal credibility.environmental labeling, food attributes, food marketing, quality perception, Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety,

Previous studies in software certification provide a set of axiom and supporting models for software assessment and certification. Two main researches were undertaken to study the issue of certification and developed models of software certification. These models have been developed using requirements-design-implementation strategy to ensure that it meets the needs of a number of different interest groups in the industry. The two models focused on certifying software by development process and product quality approach. The models have been tested by case study, which were launched collaboratively with industries in Malaysia. We continue to extend this works and develop a more comprehensive and integrated model of certification.A significant advantage of the proposed integrated model is that it allows software quality metrics to be updated, modified and added as necessary in the future
