    Novel parameter estimation schemes in microsystems

    This paper presents two novel estimation methods that are designed to enhance our ability of observing, positioning, and physically transforming the objects and/or biological structures in micromanipulation tasks. In order to effectively monitor and position the microobjects, an online calibration method with submicron precision via a recursive least square solution is presented. To provide the adequate information to manipulate the biological structures without damaging the cell or tissue during an injection, a nonlinear spring-mass-damper model is introduced and mechanical properties of a zebrafish embryo are obtained. These two methods are validated on a microassembly workstation and the results are evaluated quantitatively

    Spray automated balancing of rotors: Methods and materials

    The work described consists of two parts. In the first part, a survey is performed to assess the state of the art in rotor balancing technology as it applies to Army gas turbine engines and associated power transmission hardware. The second part evaluates thermal spray processes for balancing weight addition in an automated balancing procedure. The industry survey reveals that: (1) computerized balancing equipment is valuable to reduce errors, improve balance quality, and provide documentation; (2) slow-speed balancing is used exclusively, with no forseeable need for production high-speed balancing; (3) automated procedures are desired; and (4) thermal spray balancing is viewed with cautious optimism whereas laser balancing is viewed with concern for flight propulsion hardware. The FARE method (Fuel/Air Repetitive Explosion) was selected for experimental evaluation of bond strength and fatigue strength. Material combinations tested were tungsten carbide on stainless steel (17-4), Inconel 718 on Inconel 718, and Triballoy 800 on Inconel 718. Bond strengths were entirely adequate for use in balancing. Material combinations have been identified for use in hot and cold sections of an engine, with fatigue strengths equivalent to those for hand-ground materials

    Rapid sequence optimization of spot welds for improved geometrical quality using a novel stepwise algorithm

    Joining sequence optimization is a combinatorial problem, requiring extensive computational time. The significance of determination of an optimal sequence for improved geometrical quality is substantial. Previously, genetic algorithms have been studied for defining the optimal sequence. However, these algorithms are highly dependent on the internal parameters, requiring additional computational analysis and thereby extended evaluation time. In this article, a novel robust stepwise algorithm is introduced to determine the optimal weld sequence. Application of the proposed algorithm leads to drastic time improvements for defining the optimal weld sequence of each assembly. Three industrial assemblies are evaluated. Comparison with the previously applied population-based optimization algorithms indicates that the optimization time can be reduced drastically with the proposed stepwise algorithm. The stepwise algorithm is intended to be applied in a geometry assurance digital twin, where the assembly parameters are being optimized for each individual assembly

    The new 34-meter antenna

    The new 34-m high efficiency Azimuth - Elevation antenna configuration, including its features, dynamic characteristics and performance at 8.4-GHz frequencies is described. The current-technology features of this antenna produce a highly reliable configuration by incorporation of a main wheel and track azimuth support, central pintle pivot bearing, close tolerance surface panels and all-welded construction. Also described are basic drive controls that, as slaved to three automatic microprocessors, provide accurate and safe control of the antenna's steering tasks. At this time antenna installations are completed at Goldstone and Canberra and have operationally supported the Voyager - Uranus encounter. A third installation is being constructed currently in Madrid and is scheduled for completion in late 1986

    Geometric Reasoning ability is central to many applications in CAD/CAM/CAPP environments -- An increasing demand exists for Geometric Reasoning systems which evaluate the feasibility of virtual scenes specified by geometric relations -- Thus, the Geometric Constraint Satisfaction or Scene Feasibility (GCS/SF) problem consists of a basic scenario containing geometric entities, whose context is used to propose constraining relations among still undefined entities -- If the constraint specification is consistent, the answer of the problem is one of finitely or infinitely many solution scenarios satisfying the prescribed constraints -- Otherwise, a diagnostic of inconsistency is expected -- The three main approaches used for this problem are numerical, procedural or operational and mathematical -- Numerical and procedural approaches answer only part of the problem, and are not complete in the sense that a failure to provide an answer does not preclude the existence of one -- The mathematical approach previously presented by the authors describes the problem using a set of polynomial equations -- The common roots to this set of polynomials characterizes the solution space for such a problem -- That work presents the use of Groebner basis techniques for verifying the consistency of the constraints -- It also integrates subgroups of the Special Euclidean Group of Displacements SE(3) in the problem formulation to exploit the structure implied by geometric relations -- Although theoretically sound, these techniques require large amounts of computing resources -- This work proposes Divide-and-Conquer techniques applied to local GCS/SF subproblems to identify strongly constrained clusters of geometric entities -- The identification and preprocessing of these clusters generally reduces the effort required in solving the overall problem -- Cluster identification can be related to identifying short cycles in the Spatial Con straint graph for the GCS/SF problem -- Their preprocessing uses the aforementioned Algebraic Geometry and Group theoretical techniques on the local GCS/SF problems that correspond to these cycles -- Besides improving theefficiency of the solution approach, the Divide-and-Conquer techniques capture the physical essence of the problem -- This is illustrated by applying the discussed techniques to the analysis of the degrees of freedom of mechanism

    A novel haptic model and environment for maxillofacial surgical operation planning and manipulation

    This paper presents a practical method and a new haptic model to support manipulations of bones and their segments during the planning of a surgical operation in a virtual environment using a haptic interface. To perform an effective dental surgery it is important to have all the operation related information of the patient available beforehand in order to plan the operation and avoid any complications. A haptic interface with a virtual and accurate patient model to support the planning of bone cuts is therefore critical, useful and necessary for the surgeons. The system proposed uses DICOM images taken from a digital tomography scanner and creates a mesh model of the filtered skull, from which the jaw bone can be isolated for further use. A novel solution for cutting the bones has been developed and it uses the haptic tool to determine and define the bone-cutting plane in the bone, and this new approach creates three new meshes of the original model. Using this approach the computational power is optimized and a real time feedback can be achieved during all bone manipulations. During the movement of the mesh cutting, a novel friction profile is predefined in the haptical system to simulate the force feedback feel of different densities in the bone
