Identification of cyclic components in presence of non-Gaussian noise – application to crusher bearings damage detection

    Get PDF
In this paper an issue of local damage detection in a rolling element bearing is discussed. The bearing operates in a hummer crusher, thus the vibration signal acquired on the housing contains a lot of impacts that originate in various sources. In the case of local damage detection it is crucial to find a set of cyclic impulses in the signal. These impulses are informative, in spite of impulses related to the crushing process, which are non-informative. In order to find the damage signature we provide feasibility study on a tool based on cyclostationary approach, namely cyclic spectral coherence. This comprehensive analysis includes study on four different signals from bearings in various condition and operating with or without load applied. This analysis is preceded by motivating preliminary analysis where we examine a few widely-used methods for local damage detection

Comparative review of methods for stability monitoring in electrical power systems and vibrating structures

    Get PDF
This study provides a review of methods used for stability monitoring in two different fields, electrical power systems and vibration analysis, with the aim of increasing awareness of and highlighting opportunities for cross-fertilisation. The nature of the problems that require stability monitoring in both fields are discussed here as well as the approaches that have been taken. The review of power systems methods is presented in two parts: methods for ambient or normal operation and methods for transient or post-fault operation. Similarly, the review of methods for vibration analysis is presented in two parts: methods for stationary or linear time-invariant data and methods for non-stationary or non-linear time-variant data. Some observations and comments are made regarding methods that have already been applied in both fields including recommendations for the use of different sets of algorithms that have not been utilised to date. Additionally, methods that have been applied to vibration analysis and have potential for power systems stability monitoring are discussed and recommended. 2010 The Institution of Engineering and Technology

Frequency domain analysis method of nonstationary random vibration based on evolutionary spectral representation

    Get PDF
PurposeA novel frequency domain approach, which combines the pseudo excitation method modified by the authors and multi-domain Fourier transform (PEM-FT), is proposed for analyzing nonstationary random vibration in this paper.Design/methodology/approachFor a structure subjected to a nonstationary random excitation, the closed-form solution of evolutionary power spectral density of the response is derived in frequency domain.FindingsThe deterministic process and random process in an evolutionary spectrum are separated effectively using this method during the analysis of nonstationary random vibration of a linear damped system, only modulation function of the system needs to be estimated, which brings about a large saving in computational time.Originality/valueThe method is general and highly flexible as it can deal with various damping types and nonstationary random excitations with different modulation functions.</jats:sec
